Thanks for your insightful comments; you have raised some very important points, one of which is that the absymal quality of English language education is definitely a problem that society has to address in the future. I am very pleased that you brought it to our attention; and I certainly fear for the worst as far as newly minted middle class professionals are concerned. Many of them don't learn to read and write until they finish law school ....

What are the sources saying that the camera shop will become a sports bar?
I was only in the camera shop once a few years ago, and the guy was super nice and helpful.

The camera store people were wonderful.
I recall that years and years ago, they were so willing to help with community building stuff and were always good for a monetary donation to neighborhood association programs, even when their own income was not so great. They were generous and considerate folks, rare in shopkeepers these days, and we had better hope for more of their kind. They were the backbone of the rebuilding of Newark Ave, which when i came here had about three open shops -- the rest boarded up and/or abandoned.

I just read my post like three times and nowhere is there a "Your or You're" .
So your saying that people who have taken no responsibility for their education, who have commited nothing to bettering themselves should be allowed to be pissed becuase people who have worked hard throughout their education and career are moving into their neighborhood. Do you realize how close downtown Jersey city is to Manhattan? It is inevitable due to population growth that the outskirts of manhattan are going to become more expensive and filled with young professionals. Thats what NYC does it attracts young talented people. "you reap what you sow"

Honestly, the amount of negativity towards middle class professionals in the title of this thread makes me want to puke.
Gentrification is a result of the city (manhattan) being too expensive for the average middle class professional. Therefore people are forced to move to outer areas. Its a trickle down effect, its not like these young professionals are millionares, shit their average middle class. If you are displaced due to gentrification, try graduating from high school or college, then you would be able to afford the rent downtown. and if you like cheap dollar stores and tacky furniture there are plenty to choose from in other parts of jersey city. Its terrible that the photo store is going out of business but the changes in downtown newark avenue and the stores that are coming are prgress due to people realizing jersey city is a nice place to live for everyone. Lastly, Gentrification also means that one type of culture is being changed due to the influx of another culture. If you look at the demographics of Jersey city can you please tell me which culture has rights over any other

I think its hard to compete with a brick and mortar store in this area when B&H has superior selection and Amazon.com has superior prices.

How is this because of Gentrification? As someone who you would probably call a gentrifier (simply because I am in my 30s and white....but that's a whole different thread) this is one of the few stores that I actually DID go to. I venture to say that "yuppies" and artists (because they occasionally still use 35mm) were ones keeping this store alive for as long as it lasted.
The store was great, but didn't keep up with technology or, as a previous poster mentioned, sometimes prices just weren't competitive. But to blame this on gentrification is backwards. Higher-end stores like this (and I use higher-end here to mean niche markets and expensive equipment) would be the RESULT of gentrification, not killed by it.

I don?t believe it?s simply just the decline of film. Maybe film and processing was the bread and butter, but small stores can no longer compete with large retailers for equipment and accessory sales no matter whether we?re talking about film or digital. It?s probably safe to say that more people own and continue to buy new cameras than ever before, but small camera shops can?t move the same volume, so they would have to resort to higher prices. The problem is that nobody wants to pay $3,000 for a camera body that?s available for $2,500 elsewhere, regardless how they feel about supporting small business. Kodak is another story. They could be the world?s most significant player in the photo imaging business if they didn?t have a history of making really bad decisions. They were never suffering for expertise or a foothold in the industry.

They should have just merged with Another Man's Treasure and had a "vintage camera" department.

good point! maybe if they had changed the name to something like Hudson Vintage Camera And Retro Accessories or something....
But seriously, I know a photog in NYC who pays TONS of money for old batches of (discontinued) Kodak film....

In some ways I would expect gentrification to have helped prolong the life of this store; its very in fashion among the moneyed classes to have retro film cameras or high end digital cameras and the accessories that go along with it.

seriously, this has nothing to do with gentrification, it has to do with technology advances, and the fact that now "regular" people who are not photographers can take amazing photos with iPhones... Old school camera stores are a thing of the past....

Walking down newark ave, I'm surprised at how some stores stay open - namely that discount store on the corner of barrow and newark ave - I never see anyone in there.
Also that new and large women's clothing store (I am forgetting the name of it) - it's like a ghost town whenever I walk by. Do those businesses get some sort of property tax relief?

I'm always amazed when I see a small camera shop that is still in operation. They had a good go at it, incredible longevity. I wish them all the luck with new projects. Has nothing at all to do with gentrification, just supply and demand. The industry has changed so much since the days of film and processing. Look at Kodak. Just a different world.

this has nothing to do with gentrification, just technology. Sad to see the place go, but it was a bit of a dinosaur. Only been in there a couple of times and the owner was very helpful and an incredibly friendly guy.

It always sucks when a decent business run by good people closes. But local camera stores are having a really tough time all over (not just due to "gentrification"). With cheap digital cameras available in Best Buy and most photos taken with cell phones, the big drivers of sales - film processing and camera sales - have suffered.
It's even harder around here, as the higher-end part of the market that a lot of local camera stores have focused on tends to be dominated by B&H and Adorama. I hope Hudson Camera is successful in their new endeavor. Given the lack of some services we still have in JC, I'm sure there's a niche for them.

Pete isn't going to be out of business for long. He plans to open up a smaller camera/framing shop downtown sometime in the next few months.

At least there wasn't a movement to stop this.
I don't expect any dvd/video and photography stories to even exist in the next 5 years. What's going to replace it?
