I've seen a pretty large skunk twice this week on Jersey Avenue between 4th and 5th Streets. One time was at about 5AM and the other was 9PM.

At 5AM, he was in someone's trash, and we got very close before I saw him - only a couple of feet away.

At 9AM, he was walking out of the alley, towards us (I had two dogs) and he just kept coming towards us, which was odd. I made some loud noises and he eventually turned around.

Luckily, we didn't get sprayed. keep an eye out!

That must be what is driving my dog crazy at night. Not a happy camper.

everything's a carrier of rabies. skunks are no more or less prone to it than feral cats.

actually, when you take into account the fact that the rest of the wild kingdom tends to give skunks wide berth, they're probably less exposed to rabies than a feral cat.

From wikipedia:
The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recorded 1,494 cases of rabies in skunks in the United States for the year 2006 ? about 21.5% of reported cases in all species. Skunks trail raccoons as vectors of rabies, although this varies regionally (raccoons dominate along the Atlantic coast and eastern Gulf of Mexico, skunks throughout the Midwest and down to the western Gulf, and in California). Despite this prevalence, all recorded cases of human rabies from 1990?2002 are attributed by the CDC to dogs or bats.

Good point JCbiscuit but still worth mentioning.

They are quite a few who live up by Henry Street/Chestnut Avenue. I've seen them eating out of the cat bowls folks leave out on the sidewalk. These lot seem fearless/oblivious. I sneaked by on the sidewalk as one was feasting to see what would happen...the striped kitty just glanced up and continued to dine.

I know that is bad but I did love the part "when I ran over it with my bike." Sorry.

I got sprayed this summer. I don't know if it had anything to do with its temperament, it sprayed me when I ran over it with my bike. It really sucked.

I have smelled a skunk at night on 9th St occasionally. Haven't seen one, though. I have a dog that likes to chase small animals, even on leash, so I hope the skunk never makes an appearance.

When I was in HS my dog got sprayed and nothing--baths, tomato juice (an old myth)-- worked to get the smell out. We finally had to take him to a groomer. It's disgusting.

And look more roommates or should I say strange bed or bad fellows. Oh yeah they're near & dear.

I've seen him over by the Jersey Ave footbridge to LSP as well. There's a surprising amount of wildlife around that bridge, actually: possums, raccoons, herons, swans etc.

Well you kids do not live on 1st and Colgate. It's like the Bronx Zoo up here. We have a family of snunks that live in the PA vacant lot. Then we have a tribe of groundhogs. Then of course the rest of the zoo. I have a Jack Russell and I looked it up. If a snunk spays them it could be deathly. Also if the gey it in their eyes they will be blinded for life. Of course I have a dog that chases the damn things.

For the last couple of years, I've seen skunks while walking my dog around 4th St. at 5 am.

The other night I was walking home from the PATH on Erie (near 2nd Street) and almost stumbled over a skunk. It was only 6:30 or so but perhaps now that it's dark earlier they're coming out earlier. This little guy poked around a driveway for a while before ambling onto the sidewalk and through the front fence of a brownstone. If you're out walking after dark, especially with kids or dogs, watch out for him and his friends or you might surprise him and get sprayed!
