Tachair books is a new used bookstore on Newark Ave, near the corner of Monmouth. They will usually give you a free coffee if you donate books.
I love having any kind of bookstore downtown, so have been going to them lately with donations. Plus the hours are more convenient than the church book fair.

Does anyone know where I can donate books in Jersey City? I would like to avoid The Salvation Army. The books have been in storage for over five years. Basically novels (hardcover) authors such as Dean Koontz. I do not like to books in the garbage. I appreciate any suggestions.

If you're in the Heights, you can bring them to the Riverview Farmers Market in Riverview-Fisk Park (Palisade Ave between Griffith and Bowers). The Market's information table is accepting used books every Sunday in August, 9 am - 3 pm.
The books will be sold at the RNA Flea Market in September (as a fundraiser to cover the operating costs of the market).

Last year, both myself and my workplace were undergoing a move. We both had loads of books we want to go to a charity, but we found that most organizations, second hand stores, were over burdened with donations. Our best bet was to recycle. Sad, but true.

Grace Church @ 39 Erie Street has been the traditional place to drop off unwanted books for their weekend book sale. Might just want to give a call first & check when's the best time to bring 'em

If you are willing to drop a book in the mail every now and then and register yourself online- www.paperbackswap.com is a site where you can actually swap old books for ones you want. Free membership, you pay to ship books out, but not to receive. Typically about $3 to mail a book.

Is there any place I can drop or donate used and unwanted books in JC? I live in McGinley Square area of JC. I figure I would drop them off at the Salvation Army by the Tunnel but I heard they are not so accepting towards books.
thanks Will

You can leave it at Raph's Plaza, 709 Bergen Ave. JC Peace Movement will be giving books and clothes to needy (free) on 2nd (at Raphs) and last (jsq fountain) sundays from this month onwards between 12-2pm. Third Sunday, we help another group who give clothes/books/food to needy at Grant/MLK between 12-2pm. In case, you want me to pick, I can do that also, please IM...

someone up the block from me on 4th always leaves books on their stoop and they disappear all day and night. it seems to work well for them. i've taken a few world war 2 related history books from their stoop as well as a few novels which turned out to be really good books :)

I have a bunch of books from college and some other books, that I wanted to donate. Does anyone know any place that I can bring them or if there is a charity that will pick them up? Thanks!

The only books I've ever had GVV Church decline have been textbooks and encyclopedias.

You can drop off books at Grace Van Vorst Church on Sundays while the book sale is open-- I think that is the only time. The official hours are, I believe, 12:30 through 4:30, but they are usually getting set up around noon so I'm sure you could drop them off a little before 12:30. Thanks!! You think they'll take "Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus"? It's in pristine condition - barely looked through!

That method goes for anything useful. If it's salvageable in any way, just leave it on your stoop and it will disappear before you know it.

I've dropped off boxes of books at Grace Van Vorst church recently. I've only done it on Sunday afternoons though. Don't know if you can drop them off there at other times.

If anyone has any information, that would really be useful. I was in the same boat this past spring and found out that the library doesn't take book donations anymore. The library suggested Grace church as well, but no one ever answered the phone there whenever I tried to call to get some information and when and where to drop off. I know there are places that will take book donations, but it's hard to get to places outside of downtown if you don't own a car.
In the end I just stacked the books out by my front stoop, and by the end of the day, they were all gone except for one book. The lone book that didn't have any takers: "Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus." Understable as it was a stupid book - can't believe I got talked into buying that in the first place!

Bob at Grace Church has been accepting books on behalf of the Grace Community Services, a non-religious, non-profit where part of the monies collected provide revenue for their Senior and Homeless programs including free breakfast on weekends for the homeless.

I could just give them to Goodwill, and that way get a tax credit. The Jersey City Public Library says they don't take book donations, which surprised me. I buy and read a lot, and some titles, while popular, I don't want to keep. Maybe a local High school?
