Good point - Special Education Services are crucial, as are useful interventions/resources for the entire district.
People, especially parents, are always scared of change. I am looking forward to meeting a few of the candidates on Thursday at Zeppelin Hall. Hopefully concerned citizens (parents or not) will come out.

Every election you get to pick from the candidates that are running.
The Fulop folks make a good case that their candidates are a good fit with each other, and bring complementary skills to the Board. Nobody on the Board or running for it knows special ed like Sue Mack, and that's a huge chunk of the budget and very important to get right. This election, though, you get three votes, so pick the three individuals you like best for the job. Nobody can seriously argue that Marvin Adames and Carol Harrison-Arnold are not well-qualified, capable, and a breath of fresh air compared to what we've seen on the Board.

I love how people say that. But for some reason status quo is different for different people. Generally status quo means full sweep. But then Fulop backs one current member of the board last year and he is considered as part of the "change" movement. Same thing this year. Changing the status quo by keeping one current member in. I am not saying the current members are good or bad, but if any other individual (but Fulop) backed current board member(s) people would say "throw the bums out".

Just a reminder. Reposting
Six days before the election, on April 21st, there will be an education-reform fundraiser at Zeppelin Hall in Jersey City to support Marvin, Carol, and Sue. It is a low dollar event with sugested contribution $20 We will be joined by two special guests: Anibal Ramos and Shavar Jeffries, who are at the forefront of education reform in New Jersey. t is rare that these gentlemen appear at a joint event outside their own city of Newark. They are doing it on April 21st to make sure Newark can soon have, in Jersey City, a partner in in pushing the urban education conversation in New Jersey. I am hopeful you can join us for this special event.

Maybe it would be helpful if people understood what constitutes a political machine. A political machine is a function of patronage. Being organized and having enthusiastic supporters committed to your agenda doesn't make you a machine. Fulop no more has a machine than Levin does.

Hey holdonaminute11, why do you say that 2 of the 3 candidates above are "part of a political machine" ? Just because Councilman Fulop supports this slate doesn't mean he picked them OR that he controls how they vote OR what they say!! I was also part of the committee that took applications from many prospects who wanted to run with Councilman Fulop's support. Fulop had literally no input into this committee's decisions, nor did the hundreds of Fulop's supporters. Those chosen to serve on this committee were parents, mothers, fathers, and singles such as myself. A highly diverse group of folks. We felt this group could work together as a team, which you need on the school board, since unless you have 5 votes in the 9 member committee all is just conversation. Your throwawy comments on serious candidates are disparaging, misogynistic, and innacurate. However, thanks for playing.

last year's election had a record voter turnout, this year it is starting to look to be record campaign spending.

I got to this forum a little late last night and couldn't seem to get into this debate. Kid questioners was a nice touch but overall this left much to be desired.
My take: Aury Nunez - She should cut her losses and just bow out of anymore debates (if there are any more). She is CLUELESS! She is so bad that her husband may not even vote for her. Hiral Patel - UGH! Amanda Khan - Who stole her mojo? The flame is now a flicker though she is more coherent. Vidya Gangadin - She needs some PASSION. Where is the Wizard of Oz when you need him? could barely stay awake when she spoke. Carol Arnold Harrison - She sounds tough and intimidating. Maybe she should be superintendent instead and whip some butt. Too bad she is part of a political machine. Susan Mack - Is that make-over show still around? Didn't hear a word she said...was struggling just looking at her. Passed her prime and time. Dr. Thompson - Didn't know muppets could look so angry. Another one past her prime and time. Jason Burg - No longer scary to me... just sad. Looked and sounded very uncomfortable. . Marvin Adames - Seems like a nice person. Somewhat green and also part of a machine. Maybe one day? Nabil Youssef - Must admit he is intriguing. A teacher bashing Dr. Epps. For that alone, he gets some consideration.

Got me, ras9929!
Absolutely right - now you know why I am not teaching math! Thanks for taking me back to school. 2 x 5 = 10 That math WORKS! Just like Carol, Sue, and Marvin.

Actually if you want to get the equation right
2A * 5A actually equals 10A^2 But I guess that's just par for JC schools.

Here's the place for comments, questions, and thoughts about the only three candidates who are running together.
From everything I've seen, Marvin Adames, Carol Harrison-Arnold, and Sue Mack are the top three candidates. Not taking away anything from the others, these three bring the right combination of skills, the right work ethic, and the right vision to our school Board. As has often been noted, one vote doesn't get you anywhere. It takes five votes to move the Board. If you get three candidates who are pretty much on the same page, that's a huge step forward. 2A times 5A equals 10A - the right equation for our schools.

If you can't make the forums, is there any place where you can get info on all the candidates and their positions? The short answer is no. The Jersey City Independent sent a questionnaire to some or all of the candidates, and I hope will be publishing the results. Marvin Adames, Carol Harrison-Arnold, and Sue Mack share a Facebook page and have been answering questions there. It's part of their commitment to responsiveness and transparency. www.facebook.com/Jersey.City.Board.of.Education - you will have to LIKE the page in order to post. Dr. Frances O Thompson also has a Facebook page, but is not using it for that purpose - you might give her a try at Facebook - Dr. Frances O Thompson, or visit the website she mentions there. Same for Vidya Gangadin and Jayson H. Burg, presumably other candidates as well.

That type of patronizing, "trust me, but never question me" attitude is exactly why we have third world schools in this city. Same type of leadership that keeps "developing" nations in a perpetual state of "development." Time for Francis to go.

Last night at the forum there was a quiet rumble of independent coming from Francis and the implication that Steven Fulop controlled board would ruin the board's independence. As someone so closely involved with the people Steven endorsed, I can say that she is way off base. If anyone has met Marvin, Sue and Carol they will undoubtedly know that these are three very independent minded people. They showed this very clearly during the community committee interview process. Moreover, contrary to Ms Thompson's belief, board members SHOULD be beholden to someone - VOTERS. By relegating his endorsement to community members, Steven has done just that, given a voice to a group of reform minded community members and voters who don't have the benefit of being part of a natural "machine" (i.e. a union or a city employee) We as voters have every right to tell our elected officials how we want them to vote. And we have the ultimate power to voice our satisfaction/dissatisfaction during re-election. I therefore will be expressing my dissatisfaction with Francis, my satisfaction with Sue and my belief in Carol and Marvin.
