If I was a mugger I'd also hide out on Essex between Greene and Washington. It's so dark at night you can barely see the sidewalk!

lets look at the bright side, with influx of luxury condos and apts, the thugs can't manage to mug everyone that has moved to town in the past 5-10 years.

Healy will tell you not to think about this and instead try to focus on the first black fire chief and the first gay councilman and you'll feel better.

Part of the problem is that the criminals know the cops in this city are only interested in guarding construction, not the resident's security. It is up to us to help the police department find their way. I know there weren't many details available for this specific case, but anytime you see something happen, write down as many details as you possibly can: license plates, descriptions of those involved including what they are wearing, how tall they are, etc, no detail is too small - and e-mail everyone you know. All those people should then call the Jersey City non emergency police number (201) 547-5477 (NOT 911!) and relay the story. As they receive more calls about incidents they will realize that Jersey City residents are serious about their safety and the police department will have no option but to participate in making this a safer and better place to live.

Wow I walk down Mercer between 6:30 and 6:45 every night. Guess I might be switching to Montgomery. At least there is more traffic and less places to hide.

Actually my wife and I talked about that (for economic, job, tax reasons.. Texas is a very business friendly State).

For concealed carry (CCW) reasons I could also choose between 40+ States that are 'shall issue' or unrestricted (no permit required). NJ is way behind in allowing people to defend themselves. CCW has been expanding since the early 1990. It has been a success with no "blood on the streets" promised from the anti-self defense crowd.

They should look into hiring class 2 special police officers. Alot of shore towns hire them during season. They have complete police powers and carry. Fire all of the useless meter maids.

I don't understand. You think that people shouldn't be able to defend themselves against thugs who are out to do us all harm?

Oh right---you're part of that group that believes only criminals should have guns. Makes sense.

Please attend the Van Vorst Park Association?s monthly meetings where you can voice your concerns and contribute ideas for solutions. These are your neighbors who have been working toward improving quality?of ?life issues around VVP for many years?they could use your input.

In my circle of friends alone living in my four block radius (Jersey Ave/Newark) I've had 1 mugging, 1 car break in, 1 apartment break in, 2 personal theft (from potted plants outside to garbage cans). All within the last 6 weeks. To have everyone I know be touched by crime in such a short period of time is no coincidence. This city is getting more and more dangerous.

Once again - what are the proactive things we citizens can do?

Thanks for posting, I was walking my dog here right around that time today as I do every day, but didn't see anything. I understand you don't have many details, but could you possibly clarify a bit-- you mention the girl was robbed right past M&P on Mercer (presumably between Grove and Barrow on the right side of the street?)-- the assailant came from "underneath the trees"-- I am trying to figure out exactly where this is, as there aren't really any cluster of trees on the block (the lone tree in front of the first brick townhouse apartments ?). This block is heavily trafficked, especially during rush hour home, so I am wondering where they could have been waiting. I have always felt 100% safe on this block, but now I am concerned, please share any more info if anyone has it.

Me again. I do not have any more details than those I posted earlier. But to clarify the location: it occurred on the north side (the M&P side) of Mercer Street, in front of the large red brick apartment building right near M&P -- there is a tree or two nearby, and this is the approximate spot where the victim was approached. I did not try to speak to her as she was understandably upset (and was making her report to the police by the time I was passing by). If I can get any other info I will be sure to post it.

That block is heavily trafficked, so what? You people are forgetting that most criminals are more stupid than they are brazen. Most of the time they are under the influence of drugs or alcohol too. They don't plan crimes like you and I would as sober (some of us) and educated people. They just pull a knife, find a victim and go. I agree too that our cops have to be more communicative. As for the Captain's meetings? Biggest waste of time ever.

I agree more detail is needed as that block is pretty heavily trafficked at 6 and change. Furthermore there aren't any dark areas that I can think of...

Not sure if M&P has security cameras but any business around there ought to do everything they can to keep the area safe. It's in everyone's best interest...

We have third-world cops to address third-world crimes in a city striving to be cosmopolitan.

The election cannot come soon enough. It's time for JC to grow up.

In a word yes, but it was how you approached it. Go down to the precient and speak to the officer in charge, or go to the East District Police Captain's meeting and you local block association meeting and persue the inquiry. If all else fails speak to your 4 council persons, meaning your local ward councilman and the 3 at large council persons. After doing all of this I would hope you get some kind of response. Don't just walk away as if you were a little child with you tail between your legs feeling you asked a dum question. And bring a pen and pad with you.

On my way home I just walked by a woman making a report to police officers after being robbed at knifepoint on Mercer Street just a few doors down from Marco & Pepe at about 6:20PM this evening. The assailant approached her underneath the trees in front of an apartment building just past the restaurant, threatened her with a knife and then took her bag. Fortunately she was not harmed. Sorry for my lack of more detail here but I wanted to give folks a heads up.
