Riding my bikein New York City today ( March 29th) I saw a turkey at Battery park. I asked a Park Ranger about it and he told me that was the famous Zelda. http://www.nydailynews.com/ny_local/2 ... draw_in_battery_park.html

As much as I welcome our new wildlife overlords, folks need the think again about their cuteness/harmlessness.

Coyotes Just the Latest Animal to Invade Manhattan's Urban Jungle
March 26, 2010 By Mariel S. Clark and Jason Tucker DNAinfo Staff MANHATTAN ? New York's urban jungle has been crawling with critters in the past few years with coyotes, rabid raccoons, dolphins, deer and rare raptors invading the neighborhoods. DNAinfo tracked the abundance of wild animals that had strayed toward Manhattan and found that many of them prefer to hang out in the swankier parts of the city. A rabid raccoon wasn't looking to pay too much for a pair of aviator sunglasses when it somehow found its way into John Varvatos' SoHo shop. Shortly afterwards, the diseased animal was put down and the city announced a vaccination program meant to curb the plague of rabid raccoons that had taken over Central Park. Meanwhile, bald eagles were making themselves at home in Inwood Hill Park and a pair of dolphins were spotted swimming in the East River. A deer was also spotted in New York's Harbor, presumably having entered the water in Jersey City, before swimming all the way to Governors Island. This week, another animal believed to be native to New Jersey, a coyote, slipped through the Holland Tunnel and was found wandering around TriBeCa. The coyote was eventually captured by police. Despite the invasion of creatures from the rest of the country, New Yorkers' reactions to sharing their space with animals has tended to hover around the level of fuggedaboutit. "It doesn't scare me because coyotes aren't predatory toward humans," said one man about the coyote captured in TriBeCa Thursday. "I don't have any sheep to protect." Wait, so 2 sheep were strolling through JC? Really?
Interesting how both the sheep and the deer are related to Christmas. I smell a rat.

Don't joke! I had a dream last night that a deer jumped in my bedroom window and the dog ran away and left me alone to get the deer out. I used a chair and an umbrella, if I recall the dream correctly. W. T. F.
Sh*t I didn't think I had to worry about living in the urban jungle.

So yesterday was a deer, today I just happened to stop by the animal shelter when animal control was bringing in not one, but two sheep!

oh no god forbid somebody shoots it and eats it! much better to let him take the chance of getting hit by a car or drowning.
Deer often do die after being tranq'd - they dont do well at all with drugs. also, its not uncommon for deer to swim miles upon miles in cold waters especially during the rut. many deer will swim from Nantucket to Cape Cod which is like 25 miles or so. a little jaunt to governer's island is just a warmup for a male that size!

Nice buzzkill. However, this deer did avoid traffic in Jersey city, the disgusting water in the Hudson River - I have faith that he'll live long enough to be killed by a hunter.....

Are we all sure this isn't the same Half Deer Half Human that was involved in that incident with the contractor on 8th Street a few months back?

mmm venison sausages! Seriously why are they releasing this guy back to the wild? Deer are totally overpopulated and a menace on the highway. Can't they humanely slaughter him to feed the homeless or something?
Though I do feel sorry for the obviously frightened thing.

Poor guy looks delicious. Bet all that salt water swimming would act as a nice brine.

I miss the days when all we had to complain about were yuppies, yoga, and overpriced lemonade. It's only a matter of time before the yuppies complain that the deer, hawks, and turkey have driven the price of homes up and they'll all have to move. All kidding aside, I wish I could have been here to see this today.

in the last three weeks downtown, I've seen pics of red tail hawks eating pigeons on hoods of parked cars, wild turkeys playing frogger at 14B and now a ten point buck, (apparently living downtown for three weeks?) decides to run through town and then swim over to Governor's Island...
Really? almost miss the stories of poisoning pigeons, giant rats, roaches/bed bugs and pitbulls raising hell. almost.

It's a major miracle if he made it all the way across the Hudson to Governor's Island considering the tides which if he left Jersey City would have taken him right down to the Verrazano lickety split. Is it a definite that it was Governor's Island and not Ellis or Liberty? Let's go to the videotape. Glad he made it in any event.
