What PHdog says is true: Cheapest nuts are in the Indian stores on Newark near Journal Square. In addition to many other fine produce. I'm particularly fond of the shelled unsalted pistachios. All the nuts are in large non-idiotic plastic packages with a minimum of fuss.

BJs has good quality nuts in the baking aisle. I use them for baking and snacking. Bekeley & Jensen is the store brand but you can get a giant bag for about $10

I know you said JC, BUT... Basic Health Food store on Washington Street in Hoboken has bulk almonds in the back.

Do you just like almonds or are you using them for a cutting diet? haha.. anyhow, ignore me.

Seriously though, you can try the back left of ShopRite. Produce section near the onions and potatoes - NOT the nut and candy aisle.

When I was eating loads of almonds, I got a 5lb Blue Diamond bag there.. they were not brittle, not too many irregulars, tasty, etc.

Good luck

Actually they did move them. Most of the time these days they have them in the baking isle all the way in the front near the flowers, bottom shelf. Cost is for $10 for a douzen.
You can also buy them and other canning/pickling supplies online at:

Anyone know of any stores (in the Hamilton Park area, preferably) that sell mason jars for canning? Thanks!

Webmaster, since you're on top of things as usual, this may actually belong in a bakery thread.

Last I checked Hard Grove sells it by the slice, and you may get them to sell a whole one to you if they make it in house, or tell you where to buy it. Many latin restaurants sell Tres Leches.

Another idea, which may impress Mommy more, is making it yourself. It's ridiculously easy to make and usually turns out perfectly, especially if you let it sit in the fridge a day or two. Here's a recipe to get you started, though I usually skip making any sort of topping, it's up to you.

I told my Ecuadorian boyfriend that I'd bring this for Christmas.

Look, I'm white. I'm going to have ENOUGH trouble with his moms. She's gonna hate me no matter what.

I just want a good cake to start things of right.

Never seen a ready-made version. It can be a bit of a pain to make, but it makes the house smell so good, it's almost worth it just for that.

If you get to Hoboken, you might want to step in to Hemer's Cafe and ask if they can give a suggestion. That's the only local German joint I can think of.

The Buy-Rite guys seems pretty accommodating. Could ask them to order a case or two.

Ok I have something I'm looking for the holidays...
Gl?hwein or Gl?gg. It is a type of mulled spiced wine served hot in the winter. You can find non-alcoholic versions at Ikea and German stores in and around the city. But the alcoholic version is really hard to find. I have a recipe to make it myself but I rather just buy bottles of the ready made stuff for the holidays. I found a Shoprite in south Jersey that has it, but the Shoprite in Jersey City claims their distributor can't get it. I tracked down an importer but they don't sell to consumers, have a two case minimum and wouldn't disclose who they sell the stuff to.
Some liquor store on the upper west side claims to have it, and as a last resort I'll go there, but I was hoping to find a local liquor store.

Yes both Shoprites have them all the time, at the Marin location it is usually in the meat cases on the floor at the back of the store next to the liquor store.

Did you try Sava Polish Deli at 346 Grove Street? She has amazing meats (she's very picky with the butcher she sources from); if she doesn't have it I know she would order it for you.
BTW, if you haven't tried her food, I highly recommend that you do. Everytime I serve anything from her restaurant my guests literally eat everything in sight!
I also found out that most Polish dishes are made by either baking or boiling the food, meaning that there's actually less fat than you think in such hearty fare. I definitely get my carb-fix here but she has terrific vegetable dishes too (and desserts that are to die for -- apple blintzes, apple fritters, yum...).

The CTown on Bergen and Academy has smoked ham hocks. I'm guessing the Extra on MLK would too, maybe even cheaper. Also, call Moloney's on Newark and Central.

Try the butcher on Grove. Forgot the name of the place, but if you ask, he may have them in the back, or can order some for you.

Try fareway in Paramus or Whole foods in Edgewater, since you have a car, both these places aren't too far from JC.

Good Luck.

instead of starting a new thread everytime someone is looking for ____ or ____ i thought i would start this thread and we could all use it for whatever ingredients we might be looking for.

right now, i'm looking for some smoked ham hocks to make soup with. anyone know of any supermarkets in JC that carry them? i usually shop at the A&P over by target, but i don't recall ever seeing them there. i was thinking maybe shop rite on marin or maybe even the shop rite in hoboken on 9th and madison since they have a pretty large/varied meat selection. i have a car so i'd be willing to travel to nearby towns, but if i can find what i'm looking for in JC that would be preferable. thanks!
