so they start to move people in already? I was thinking about this place several months ago and decided to back off because of location but I think for the money, you can't get much more in Jersey City.

Yes, those tracks are not used. It is just a forest up there. If those tracks were used, we would be looking at trains all day. That would be awful.
If you like the general downtown area, then the Crescent Court spot is fine. It is walkable to the Grove Street PATH station (13 minutes). Some people just don't like being near Route 78. Indio's does not bother us. The other bars on 2nd Street are more of an issue for the people that live close to those bars.

Thanks for the tips guys - I was a little unsure of the area, but from what you are all saying, if it's even a debate whether there are trains right there or not then it can't possibly be that bad. As far as the tracks you see on google maps that run east of CC, I think that's the old line that used to run above Columbus... hard to tell though.
Seems like it could be a good area

I just went to google to double check, and look at what I had seen firsthand. If you follow the tracks, they go all the way back to Brunswick St. before the disappear underground. I'm not sure if those are the tracks Path uses or not, but those were the tracks I was referring to.

What really causes the most noise in this hidden gem of a neighborhood is actually the construction of Crescent Court itself. :)
Seriously, until this project started, it was fairly quiet. I live in the immediate surroundings of this building and have for 3+ years. Here is what you will hear in this area sometimes: trucks downshifting on the turnpike overpass, the occasional horn of the PATH train right before it tucks underground, and some of the wildlife that lives on the jungle like oasis across the street from CC (cats, raccoons, skunks and a possum!) I've seen this building be constructed from Day 1. I feel like an apt in CC would be a great investment.

I just looked at the Google satellite images. I think the trains come out west of Route 78. Probably just west of the building you are referencing.

Tino,
I live extremely close to the Crescent Court project. I am currently sitting with my windows open and the loudest noise is the wind from the incoming storm. That's not to say that 78 can't/doesn't provide noise. It's just that it wouldn't be something I'd consider as a detriment to living at CC compared to other areas in downtown JC. Good luck in your search.

I know the hill is Port Authority owned land, but why aren't the trains visible at that point?

If you are at crescent court and look up the hill underneath the overpass, you will see a Brownish/Orangeish building that says something about belonging to the PATH on it. The train exits the tunnel well to the east of that, between the building and Brunswick St. I know because when I first moved to the area, I took the dog for a walk up there because I was curious as to what was up there.

You are correct about the freight trains are in the area. Never noticed them before.
Here is some video exiting the tunnel. I have never seen a train. It is difficult to tell exactly where the exit is. I will try to listen more closely. PATH Train

Wrong. That is where the PATH trains emerge from underground. They blow the horn to alert people who might be in the area, although they should not be. And as for the freight trains, do some reasearch and read about the kid who lost his leg after being run over by one of the freight trains that run through the area.

With my windows closed, I really do not hear much noise from the Turnpike or much else. Outside there is a general buzz from Route 78, but it is not a big deal. I have no idea what people are talking about with respect to the trains. The PATH is underground at Crescent Court and I do not know if there are freight trains running nearby. If there are some, I have not seen them in the 3 and 1/2 years I have lived there.
Frankly, I expect most of the noise in the future to come from the new residents at Crescent Court. The Indio's crowd doesn't usually come all the way down the block to the Crescent Court area so that is not a problem.

I didn't even notice the freight trains... it looks like the PATH goes underground right there so I'm sure there's some noise from that too

I don't live nearby, but I think freight trains move through there at night. Not sure how often.

I went wandering around the place the other day. With all the windows open, the traffic is actually a lot more noticable than it is from street level. I was surprised.

I'm looking to move to CC and was wondering if the noise from 78 is bad at night - doesn't seem too bad, but wanted to hear from someone who lives in that area. thanks.

it is the most prestigious area of the intersection of 2nd street and merseles street in jersey city. the location is perfect - close to both the interstate and only steps from the path. i'd suggest that you drive around the area on a friday night between 11 pm and 3 am.

I just recently went on Crescent Court's 'Hard Hat Tour'. It gave me a firm understanding of the floorplans and amenities offered in each condo. I was extremely impressed with all it has to offer, from the craftsmanship of the homes to the enclosed parking spot (with no additional fee), Crescent Court has surpassed everything else I have seen in my search for a new home. And best of all, I was amazed at how reasonably priced their condos are!

That pocket park drives me insane every time I pass it. It has so much potential. There has been some talk at meetings about reopening it, but with all the red tape in this city, I'm not holding my breath.

Agreed. I live on First. Indio's is a haven for scumbags and defects. It needs to disappear, but it ain't.
Of course, this neighborhood also has a practically unused baseball field (what a waste of space for "active recreation" for three months of the year) and a pocket park that's been closed for 25 years.

I live in the area too (monmouth Street) and am a pregnant woman and feel pretty safe walking. If it's really late I sometimes do opt for a cab. Of course there are a few scuzzy bars in the neighborhood but I really do like this section of downtown. It feels a little less gentrified and more like a real neighborhood and it's still much more affordable than some others Grove Street, Paulus Hook. I also think our neighborhood is safer and nicer than Dixon Mills b/c its further from the projects and their are more single and two family homes. I used to live near Dixon Mills on Wayne and Varick and some of those blocks just seemed sketchier.

I live in that neighborhood as well. It's generally pretty quiet. The odd car break in or two. One problem is the bar Indio's Place on First St. west of Brunswick. They have a rowdy crowd on weekends who spill into the streets at late hours, cursing and fighting and dropping their beer bottles all around. Same for the Latin Lounge on 2nd St.
Other than those two headaches, it's a pretty good area. Wish the Jersey City ABC would shut em both down.

Scarlet, I live on first ave by the crescent court construction and have always felt safe walking at night. During the week I walk home any time between 6:00pm and 11:00pm from the PATH. Yes, the area has less foot traffic, but there is a police presence at Carmine's Pizza. Just as long as you keep your wits about you - it is still a city. If I were coming home past 11:00 alone I take a taxi from the Grove PATH, but I would probably do that if I lived in any neighborhood in Jersey City. Best of luck and welcome to the neighborhood!

I am very impressed that work seems to be going right ahead at Crescent Court, as it also is with the Fields project on Newark Avenue.
Seems like the economy would have slowed these projects - anyway good luck to them.

We lived down the street from Crescent Court for two years, and I felt safe there, even walking home at night after dark. If it was very late, I'd usually take a cab from the PATH. It's quiet, but not totally deserted. Never experienced any crime myself, but a couple of neighbors did have cars broken into -- if you have a car, you might not want to park on the street.

We are planning to buy an apt there. We are moving from a very busy st in manhattan to JC. We loved the area but when I checked it at night, I didn't feel comfortable ( I feel there is less danger when more people are around)- my husband still likes it. I have a few questions:
1) how safe is the area at night? I work late and come home late when it is dark specially in winter when it gets dark at 5. 2) how comfortable ladies feel walking around the neghborhood? I feel anyone can hide in the enbankment or the bushes under the turnpike and be ready to attack. TIA!
