To summarize Taqueria:

-Pretty good, authentic, Mexican food.

-Owners, who on their bad days, truly disdain their customers.

I've never gotten the sense of warmth from the place, and though I'm a child of the 70's, it feels like shrine to the owners' lost youth.

The male owner can be a particular asshole. The last and final time I ate there, he couldn't understand the pronunciation of my name, even after I told him clearly twice--he just rolled his eyes, shook his head, and walked away.

That's when I decided I was done with Taqueria.

The Taco Truck Shop is better, although admittedly its in Hoboken. Still, the attitude at Taqueria is over the top.

They sell guac, but you have to mash it yourself. Just ask for a side avocado and a side of their home made hot sauce and stick a fork in it.

In my opinion they've gotten much nicer and happier over the years. The Mexican staff is especially nice. I saw them kick a girl and her mom out of a 4 person table a couple weeks ago, but they did it with a smile.

They've got good tacos. They'll do just fine in the village.

it's got nothing to do with being cheap, you just don't need guacamole on everything. If you're that concerned about it just get tacos to go and eat your guac at home.

I don't think I will lose any sleep over it. Like I said, screw that place! They are to cheap to even provide Guac!

I hear you on them not being the nicest counter guys, but they have gotten better. I had that same "they're dicks, I'm never going there again" attitude until I went there again. Their pork and fish tacos are so good, its so worth it. Plus they've been so much nicer. I haven't seen the guy with the "dick" attitude in a while.

In a town that doesnt have the best mexican, its hard to hold a grudge on Taqueria!

This is good news for Jersey City, since this move likely means that the male partner in the business will spend more time in NYC. He's the only person in Taqueria with a bad attitude!

Also, good luck making Taqueria work in the East Village. You'll have to compete with the well-established San Loco, home of the famous Taco Loco.

Recently I saw a sign in Taqueria that they were opening a new location in the East Village.

Is this the beginning of the end in terms of quality? Will the East Village location get all the attention from the owners?

There goes one of our little gems that Manhattan doesn't have!

Only because they didn't have the chance to lose to the Lakers in the finals...

only because the lakers failed to make it to the finals in 86. That Celtics team is still the greatest basketball team in our life time.

skip this place. the latin soul food joint that was there before Taqueria was 100 percent better. any place that has to beat you over the head with how authentic they are needs to check themselves.

i think the nickname "moby" is totally inaccurate, by the way. bald-by-choice with glasses... that's the extent of the overlap. it's so inaccurate it's distracting!

moby:

nationality - american

resides - new york/ london/ copenhagen/ japan... some of these? not flipping burgers in dumpy a** jersey city

height - 5'6" ??

weight - 135 ??

skills and interests - music, politics, charity, human rights,
animal rights, etc.

discipline - musicality

politics - left libertarian? (anarcho-vegan?)

Wow, that's random. I too finally got around to visiting that place yesterday (got off work early and went in the early afternoon) and it was fantastic. Had the Steak Gorditas, Chorizo Sopes, Chips & Salsa, and washed it all down with some Mandarin Jarritos! Everything was great, spent less than $20,and me and the wife left very happy.

+1 - great recommendation - I wasn't going to post a review for fear of bumping this thread back up, but since regulator already did....

I gotta say that when I got take out and they forgot 4 tacos, I called came back and they gave me the tacos plus a gift certificate for $15.

It's just like going to the SoupNazi. It's the quirkiness that gives its authenticity. And since the food is good, they are doing something right.

I do vote for another highchair. I will even offer to spraypaint it.

PS. Please post my posting on the wall.

The first time I went to Taqueria I was annoyed by the comments on their menu about how they don't serve chips and salsa in "cute clay pots". Fine, I happen to like Chips and Salsa but whatever. It then became obvious that, in their opinion, each customer had to be trained as to which counter to order from and to know what they want or lose their turn.
Well the food is okay but I certainly don't stand for such pretensions. I don't expect a waiter/waitress to fawn all over me but I don't need attitude either. There are some things we all learned a long time ago about how to treat "guests". If you like the food and are suitably trained then please Enjoy. I say No Thanks.
