Re: 27-year-old Jersey City man robbed of iPhone, says juveniles did it: police

If you're from Jersey City, you should know to always be AWARE of your surroundings. Smartphones tend to distract but it is no excuse to ignore your personal safety.

Blaming the victim for taking his phone out at a certain time is ridiculous. Those kids didn't choose him because he had a shiny iPhone. He just fit the bill for an easy mugging.

It's late.
No one around.
The victim wasn't paying attention, most likely with his eyes on the phone screen.
Stun him with some punches and snatch what you can.

I went there a few nights back, had a good time and it has a nice clean decor. Everybody was nice and friendly.

Is it Downtown friendly?

I didn't see any wine.

The jukebox plays all type of music but the patrons choose. Most of the patrons were Spanish music lovers, some were dancing.

I'll be back when I need something local other than the Corkscrew.

I have one on mine, I like it and serves its purpose. I live in the Heights where NO ONE knows how to parallel park.

Just don't drive around with it, that's how you really damage your paint and it looks tacky.

Parking rules are only suspended when it's a significant amount of snow. The only way to be sure is to turn to Channel 1 on the day of the storm to find out if parking rules are suspended.

A Hoboken girl in JC on a Friday night and pisses off "30" chicks. I don't believe it was 30, it's pretty dark at 10pm you can really count heads that well.

She probably came to JC for a house party, the beef started in there, spilled outside into the park. Happens alot. Especially if there is a boy involved (who probably has the whole thing on mobile video).

That's definitely not Country Village.

The store is a 24 hour spot were most locals get their cigarettes and blunts for the evening. Not the safest area since Curries Wood projects are 2 blocks over.

Here's a little JC trivia, this is the same location the first WTC bombers rented the Ryder truck in 1993.

I avoid 1/9 as much as possible, opting to take Kennedy as my highway (45mph+) whenever I move through JC.

But the new loops have eased traffic alot and keep things moving, so that I won't complain about. It's just something new we have to get used to, people never like change.

I miss Charrito's...they had some of the best Mex food I ever ate. Unfortunately they ran off and did not pay bills, or something strange like that. This past weekend celebrated the opening of the skankiest, filthiest diner I have ever seen outside of the Bowery on the LES (and I used to live there so I know of what I am referring to). To boot, there were 6 or 7 homeless-appearing ppl waiting for the place to open for breakfast at 7AM on a Sunday morning. Curious as I am I walked in and found the place rank, stank, dark, and the same counters, tables, and probably kitchen appliances that Charritos left were being used in this new place. Avoid at all costs. And no, I did not eat here...it smelled like a sewer backed up in there...so I turned and left.

The first and original Charritos is on Bergenline in Union City. Better and as cheap as the one that was located on Central (though I miss it). It's an Immi-bus ride away. Thanks for the heads up on the Dive.

There seems to be an unwritten rule in my neighborhood about how far down the driveway you can put something before it lands in the "free store." We had a handtruck on our driveway for several days, maybe even a week, but it was always up near the house. One evening, we inadvertently left it about halfway down the driveway. The next morning it was gone and our neighbor told us that someone on a bike had laid it over his handlebars and rode away with it.

Yes - my neighbor did try to stop him (yelling, running, etc.) but he was gone.

I imagine that he ran his bike into a tree trying to steer it with a big handtruck laid over it. It helps.

Come on, I would of taken it too.

This is not middle America suburbia, it's a city. You don't leave valuables visible on the street. (yes a handtruck is valuable)

Not everyone carries plastic with them. Most local bars don't accept it. And by local I mean Westside area.

It may have been the thieves lucky day, it could be any of us. Some days I may only have $20-40 bucks on me.....other days I may have $300-1,000, depending on where I'm going.

With a regulated bus you have bus stops you can count on. You see signs as you approach them.

Drive behind or next to a dollar bus at your own peril. You never know when its going to come to a halt or switch a lane right in to you .

I think the city needs a better transport system but dollar busses need to be curbed!

Stop tailgating buses they're known to make frequent stops. It is common sense.

Are alot of you assuming the buses are illegal? Gee, I wonder why?

I take them everyday to and from Port Authority. They are cheap, plentiful and reliable mode of transportation. It even drops me off in front of my house :D. It gets cramped if you don't fit in the seat or a huge person sits next to you, that's America for you. I do wish they were cleaner, some are and it usually reflects the owner/operators cleanliness.

Heck, my uncle even owns a garage with several buses. They are all well kept and insured. It's put all of my cousins through college.

this thread reminds me of the other whining thread about the cops who double-parked on a street.

Big freaking deal, if he's parked under there, he may be resting.

And for those who say "my taxes pay his salary", guess what? HE PAYS TAXES TOO! lol So lets say that siesta is on him.

And the talk about "BnR's", I don't mind the positive changes to the community. But when it's only happening to one side of the community that bothers me. And of course, like any native, no one likes to hear/read sh*t talking about the neighborhood you grew up in by someone who knows jack about it.

gumbo wrote: on a related note, has anyone noticed an uptick in rude behavior of late? maybe it's because i'm a new parent and am just paying more attention, but the other day in the downtown area experienced back to back to back examples of ridiculously asinine and uncouth behavior. viz, the parking spot i was waiting for was 'stolen' by another car. the driver just casually looked at me as i explained i'd been waiting, and then rolled up his tinted windows and sat there until i got tired of telling him how much bad karma he was incurring. later in the day, walked to the bagel store and witnessed a near collision on columbus/jersey, as the passenger of the offending car (who was simply asking to be t-boned) lazily gave the finger to the car that managed to slam on the brakes and prevent the crash, and then sped away. then, while walking in vvp and passing the dog run, witnessed a dog attack another dog while the 'innocent' dog's owner tried frantically to get her dog away and the 'aggressive' dog's owner sat on a bench for several seconds just shouting at his dog (finally got up and walked over). the absence of civility is just ridiculous. the counter-point to the above is that the volunteers in vvp and parkman did (as always) an AWESOME job yesterday, and reminded me that there are plenty of generous folk in the area. thank you!

Are you a female? Because I think I just did this to someone, maybe not you.

I was looking for parking around Nha Trang, finally found one, I see no one waiting for it. There was a car on the corner, 4-5 cars away with no warning or signal lights on, seemingly turning onto Newark Ave.

I park, the same car rolls back and the driver tells me "I was waiting for that spot, didn't you see me?!"

I ask her, "what were you doing all the way up there? "

She replies "that's my spot"

I say, "you had no signals, you were 5 cars away, and this is Jersey City, learn how to drive more aggressively."

She huffed and puffed away........right before I offered her the spot back. Rolled up my tinted windows and went inside for some spring rolls and pho. Yum.

Moral of the story: Stop being a softy, this is a CITY. It is not the end of the world, move on. LOL@ explaining karma when someone is trying to park.

And to the OP, thank you for leaving. I hope your post convinces many more yuppies and hipster douchebags to leave JC.
