I truly believe in what you are saying, it even happen to me with the police and the police never showed up, so maybe we found a flaw in the system after all. This is why animal control needs to have their own dispatch services 24/7 so that there are no mistakes whatsoever. The dispatch will follow through on the call up until it is completed unlike the police dispatch that we don?t really know what happen after a call is given to them whether it was dispatched out or just logged into their system. Again, I am sorry about that, but nevertheless, a good job well done in getting the cat to the vet.

The meeting is at 280 Grove Street in City Hall on the 2nd floor and it is open to the public.

i made the call to both animal control (4 times no answer, or even an recorded message, what is THAT about??). After reaching the cops, i was crying and told them the cat was in pain after being HIT BY A CAR, i called BACK after no response, and spoke to a nice woman (at the non emergency number) who TOLD me that animal control sometimes doesn't answer pages. after that i said, please cancel the call as we're not waiting around while this cat wails in pain, we'll do it ourselves.

so the miscommunication is on the cops, imagine that....

I understand wanting to get all the facts...certainly! But I think it is best not to "attack" anyone...kind citizen or animal control. Although animal control has its faults it also does things for the good IMO.

Cap'n/Maiden- You are truly aweful people! How could you just sit there and blog about that poor dying animal and do nothing about it?! I mean, if you had actually taken the time to find a phone book, you could have put that cat out of its misery right quick!

Oh, and I've read your posts. Community involvement, blah blah blah. Vote blah blah blah. Support the arts blah blah blah.

I swear. Some people!!

I am sorry about that, my apologies. Is just that we want to make sure that we have all of the facts in place before attacking animal control tonight at the council meeting. I hope that you could join us there tonight; we could surely use your support.

By the way for your information, the call that the police received last night was in the 300 block of NY Ave and the call was only about a cat out in front of the building. There was nothing mentioned about a stray cat being injured at that location. There it is as I mentioned, miscommunication.

Coster, I am deeply disturbed that you would think Cap'n John would lie about this situation...taking in an ailing cat and getting it the proper care. Why is there so much freaking pessimism? The JCPD systems are not perfect.

coaster - i dont know who you are - but neither my wife nor i hide behind anonymous screen names and post nonsense - and frankly - your attitude pisses me off.

to imply that we made this up?! are you f*ing nuts? Erin and i are still heartbroken - and it wasn't even one of our cats.

since you feel the need to know everything.
we live on new york ave in the heights
we called the non emergency number, as did our neighbors.
we repeatedly called animal control, and got no answers, as did our neighbors.

and to imply we don't know how to deal with the cops shows how much of a twit you are. if you check any our posts, you see that we have dealt with the local cops a million times - and they are great with us in the heights.

i'm glad you "strongly feel blah blah blah"

i strongly feel you should shut your mouth.

Coster,

Of course this really happened....
The person you spoke to at the JCPD obviously didn't know what they were talking about.

This is totally outrages, so I decided to call the police to see it for myself and they told me that there were no calls made to them regarding any injured cat in Jersey City yesterday. So my questions here; did this incident really happen? And if did (I hope that it wasn?t Daisy) on what street did it occurred on? Did this incident happen in Jersey City? And if it did (this part is important to know), how was the call placed in to the police (i.e., stray cat in the yard, I am holding an injured cat, etc.)? We need to know all of the facts before coming to any conclusion especially if we are planning to complain to the council tonight otherwise it will make us look stupid or worse yet, they may think that we are just doing this in order to get this ordinance passed.

I strongly feel that the advisory committee should make recommendations to the city that they provide animal control with their own dispatch services 24/7 in order to eliminate the police dispatcher who may be working on a real emergency call (i.e., a shooting going on, a robbery in progress, etc.) at the same time which could cause miscommunications or calls not being properly dispatched to animal control.

Already the advisory committee is off to a good start even before the ordinance is passed; the hiring of more animal control officers is a must, the creation of an animal dispatcher 24/7 is a must, how about better communication system, do they have shifts working around the clock? Do they have enough vehicles to do the job right; do they have an office that they could use 24/7? How can I get on this advisory committee?

Thank you for your compassionate response in helping this poor cat and bringing a humane end to her suffering.

Jersey City is mandated by law to have a 24/7 Animal Control response -- especially to after hours emergencies. The failure of Animal Control to respond is a longstanding problem. In 2006, members of LHS met with Health and Human Services Director Harry Melendez to address this problem. At the time, the system in place was that police would page Chief ACO Joe Frank and he would dispatch an officer. However, Frank would often fail to answer his pager and frequently, animals were left to suffer without any response. Melendez promised to put ACOs on a rotating "on call" schedule. However, obviously the problem still persists. This is why we need an Animal Control Comission. Mr. Melendez opposes the creation of this Commission. Yet sadly, Mr. Melendez is unable or unwilling to adequately address deficiencies within this department. It should not fall to ordinary citizens to help animals in distress.

I would urge you all to use this tragic example to highlight to the Council why more oversight is needed and urge them to vote "yes" on the Animal Control ordinance. The vote is TONIGHT. Contact info is below:

the police said call animal control. who had apparently been called for hours already, to no avail.

the only vet of the dozen or more that was called (even those with 24 hour numbers) that was available was in Lyndhurst. So we went there.

the cat is now resting peacefully in kitty heaven.

I'm glad to hear you went to the phonebook. Erin mentioned that she called the cops not any veterinarians. That is why I brougth up the phonebook.

There are a couple animal clinics that have give an emergency number at the end of their recorded message. Animal Clinic of Bayonne is one for sure.
What advice did the cops give? By the way hows the cat doing?

You should have immidiately grabbed a phonebook and went to the Veterinarian section in the yellow pages to look for a 24 hour animal hospital before asking people on JClist.

Erin maiden there should be more compassionate people like you. I have gone through this where there is no help for animals. WE've had to do "home remedies"...!

God bless you.

thanks everyone.

after last night, i really want to get involved. I heard there's a trap and release program out there to have these poor cats spayed. Does anyone have the contact information? i just don't want to have this happen to another neighborhood kitty.

This will be brought up tonight at the City Council meeting when they vote on the new Animal Control Commission ordinance.

This is a perfect example of what is wrong with the way Animal Control functions now. We cannot have animals hurt and suffering and left to die in our streets.

My heart goes out to you and I thank you for being a good citizen and for putting yourself out to help this animal.
