The light rail stop called "Liberty State Park" gets you to within probably 200 yards (or less) from the beginning of the running paths. Since the likely purpose of your running is exercise-based, I'd think that type of distance wouldn't be objectionable. MrGrieves - so you're the one! I run in the park at least 5 days a week, almost always in the mornings and until recently when the weather got nicer, would only see one or two other people. Is the Liberty Walk crowded? Yes - in the middle of weekend days. Weekend mornings up until 10 or so, evenings after 7-ish and weekdays throughout the day you shouldn't have any problems. Running in the park is such a treat - the park itself is a gem. It shocks me (and at the same time gives me perverse pleasure) how consistently empty the place is.

Thanks for all the info & the links! If it?s minimum 2miles including the piers, that?s good news for me?.I?m a newbie runner...I like running solo, but find it difficult to stay disciplined along the route, esp. since I don?t own a wristwatch & haven?t calibrated my pedometer yet!
I joined a small Wednesday group in Hoboken for the next few weeks ?til mid-July, but it?s a BITCH getting there - even by PATH! As for the mileage markers, that?s a great idea, except the per mit police might come after us?even putting a flower pot on my stoop requires a permit ;) I think a running group in JC would be so convenient...! What about Saturday or Sunday mornings...?

I run in LSP every other day, usually at the crack of dawn or just before. I run along the various paths as well as the walkway. I often don't see a soul, the way I like it.
"Crowded" is a subjective term. The walkway is wide and can accommodate lots of people. However, except for nice weekends or when there's an event, it's amazingly empty except for perhaps the area near where the ferry docks.

Is Liberty Walk at Liberty State Park a decent place to run? Or too crowded with tourists?

There's a group of JC runners that meets in the mornings:
http://www.meetup.com/jcrunners/ But you could talk to the organizer about running in the evening if that's what you prefer.

Perhaps we, or someone ambitious, could put in some tasteful small mileage markers along the railing. It needn't be ugly just noticeable to someone looking for it.
Or even just little spiked markers in the adjacent soil just outside the walkway. Or little paste-ons on the occasional sign reading "Don't Feed the Tigers?" I never trust any form of pedometer that relys on first factoring in some guesstimate of my gait distance. It's too variable and gives me a GIGO situation even if the number of steps is correct to the tenth decimal place.

there used to be a group run on Wednesday nights that started at Runners High in Newport. I believe they are looking to start it up again.

Nike makes this inexpensive item that you wear on your wrist and put a chip in your Nike running shoe that measures distance, calories burned and time of run. The cost is only about 40 bucks. Well worth it and very accurate. I use it often.

And with any luck we will soon be able to add about 1/2 mile to the very Northern end of the Newport property, accross the footbridge into Hoboken and then another mile or so North through Hoboken. Enough to get one huffing and puffing.

I dont know the answer but there is this great site called mapmyrun.com with a whole bunch of different routes. You basically just put your location and the distance you would like to run and you can review runs that other people have run.
Its fantastic. Just wanted to share that with my fellow runners :)

It's 2 miles if you run around the Hyatt pier and about 2.3 if you include the new pier just after the Hyatt.
URL for this route is: http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=2846190

Accounting for current construction and NOT accounting the dead dead-end turnaround spots like the walkway along the Hyatt and that other one north of it, 1.73 miles.

Does anyone know the distance of the waterfront, between the Colgate clock & the very end of Newport? I know it's about 1.5 miles between the Goldman Sachs bldg & Target, however, that's straight down Washington St. I'm curious about the convoluted path along the waterfront.....?
Thanks!
