I've never had anything bad to say about Downtown Vets, but in my opinion, they were clearly pumping you for more money because you didn't know any better.

I took my cats for their checkups/shots at downtown vet. Dr. Kristen Simko was an overall good vet; however I have 1 "mean" kitty and unfortunately she bit her. Dr. Simko assured me it was only minor and wasn't a big deal, but since it broke the skin the policy is that she had to be quarantined for 10 days and then go back for another exam to make sure she isn't rabid.
Pricing: Wellness exam with vaccinations (distemper and rabies): $98 Parasite check: $36 Bite exam: $54 Basically just warn that you have a tempermental kitty and they will try to be cautious (I underestimated mine). On the plus side I needed some hairball medicine for the mean cat and they gave it to me without bringing her in since they knew she was uncomfortable at the vet.

Totally NOT a fan of downtown vet. They seem to rape you and your emotions every time I ever went there. They did the same to my friend's pets too. My dog has gotten his teeth cleaned there twice and the price kept changing. We asked for a quote and then the price was different when we made the appointment. Then after the cleaning it changed again. WTF. There should be a set price, not one that changes.
Also, whenever we had tests done, they always came back inconclusive. It was ridiculous. And the tests cost an arm and a leg. If you are going to come back with inconclusive tests, you need to come back with a price that reflects that. I will NOT go back there. I feel like they pry on the emotions of pet owners. If it was a child, they would not get away with the stuff that they do. It's bad. I now go to the vet in Union City. MUCH MUCH happier there.Quote:

Can anybody recommend a vet who can handle a particularly cranky cat? She's bitter, angry, hates to be handled, bites, scratches, and is just generally awful ... but we love her and want to take her for a check-up.

Has anyone used Downtown Vets to get their dog's teeth cleaned? The quote was $300+ and I have a toy dog. It's worrisome in toy dogs because of the anesthesia. I like them overall, but should I suck it up and go back to Tribeca Vets where she's been anesthetized before?

There isn't a bulldog specialist at Downtown Vets. The famous bulldog vet on the East Coast is Dr. Kinnear. His practice is on Staten Island. I've never taken my bulldog to see him but have heard many many positive things.
Downtown Vets is fine for routine things like check-ups.

I was a client of the Animal Infirmary of Hoboken at 6th and Adams for 4 years, which is the same establishment as Downtown Veterinary Associates. I can tell you that I believe that the care is good overall but that I have had one serious misdiagnosis which led to unnecessary suffering for my cat Johnny because his condition went untreated for months. When I brought him back in dire pain, he was then diagnosed correctly and Michael Tudor operated on him. The surgery was very successful. That was 3 years ago.
On a more recent occasion, I had my cats get checkups in March 2008. It was discovered that my other cat Misty has many missing teeth and a few loose ones too. The doctor at the Infirmary recommended that I bring her back to have all remaining teeth pulled. This would cost me about $500. Sounded a bit extreme so, I decided to get a 2nd opinion. I brought Misty to the JC Animal Hosp. on Westside Ave: I was informed that the cat has gingivitus and thus her gums had significant inflammation for which a round of antibiotics were prescribed. Cost for visit + meds: $61, and they asked that I bring the cat back for a followup in 3 weeks. I asked if she might eventually need the teeth pulled and they said NO that they would hate to put the cat under anesthesia unless absolutely necessary and that it should be a last resort. So from this point forward, I plan to bring both of my cats to the JC Animal Hosp. on Westside Ave. I feel that they are more honest and that they truly care for your pets? health. I believe that the Animal Infirmary is a decent place, and I am very thankful for the successful surgery that Johnny received there. But I have long suspected that they want to charge you as much $ as possible, and are less concerned with the pet than they are with how much $ you spend w/them. My recent experience has proved that to me further. I hope that my experience can be of some help to you in your future decisions for your pets? health.

I especially recommend Dr Krimins. As for Hoboken Animal Hospital, we went there for an emergency late night visit once earlier this year and it was sort of a disaster. Doctor didn't have an ounce of doggie bedside manner and they ran a million tests that ended up yielding nothing more than a huge bill and a dubious diagnosis (which was later proven false).

The "Vet" in "Vet Center" on Columbus Dr stands for Veteran, not Veterinarian. Probably not a good place to take a pet.

If you drive or use Critter Cab, Dr. Thornton on Westside Avenue (Westside Animal Hospital) is good.
I don't know much about the vet at Newport. I also highly recommend Dr. Hatch in Secaucus NJ. Only 15 minutes away and you can use the Critter Cab to pick up and drop off pets.

I go to Downtown Vets. They want $500 -$600 to clean a pomeranian's teeth. Is that how much it is in JC? I used to go to Tribeca Vets when I lived in the city and they are notorious for being expensive.

We take our Butchie to Westside. Downtown and Hoboken are very expensive, sometimes almost double. I have had only good experiences with Westside also know as jersey city animal hospital.

We just got a dog and we're looking for a vet around downtown JC... anyone have any suggestions? (or hints on who not to go to?)
I'd like to have one for him close to home that I know we can count on for anything so that if he gets really sick, I don't have to put him in his carrier and take him on the path to get to the MD. Suggestions?

Dr. Tuder, the owner, is great. kinda gruff, but a super vet. he's not there very often, though.
Dr. Ponce and Dr. Wong are also really good.

for years, the vet on Washington street was the only option in Hoboken, so they got away with outrageous charges and mediocre care.
when the infirmary opened, pet owners rejoiced. there was a huge defection from Hoboken Vet, and from what I've heard, there's been no reason to return. the infirmary (and now Downtown Vet here in JC) have always given my pack of misfits excellent care, without bankrupting the biped at the other end of the leash. good luck.

It's actually the Hoboken Animal Infirmary and Downtown Veterinary Associates that are part of the same practice. I use the Hoboken Animal Infirmary for my dog and found their service to be excellent. My dog has very severe allergies and separation anxiety and the doctor went out of her way to reach out to specialists to find out what would be the course of action considering multiple medications might be needed.

Hoboken Animal Hospital and Downtown Veterinary Associates (on Newark Ave at 1st) are run by the same group and I believe the same vets often work at both places.
I have brought my dog to DVA a few times and have been happy. I like that they don't need appointments for anything but surgery and the quality of the vet care has always been fine. Keep in mind many if not most of the vets will be a BVM and not a DVM, but for routine things like shots and such that shouldn't be an issue. I have never needed a 24-hour animal emergency hospital but there are none in Hudson. I think the closest one is in Ridgefield or Bloomfield.
