all-new brick exterior (the real stuff, not garden state brickface), gorgeous, huge new windows and new doorway. the inside was completely gut-renovated, top to bottom. the store has tile floors and an exposed brick wall, and the upstairs apartments have brand-new everything.

as one of their neighbors, I am thrilled that they took the time and effort to make this place so beautiful.

Torico's renovation is looking great and I would like to give them all the credit due for taking the time and money to do it properly. This is going to be a spectacular, historic storefront when finished and will be a setting equal to their spectacular product! Thanks Torico's for everything you bring to the neighborhood!!! If I have to wait a few more weeks (or months... but I hope not) for my mint cookie fix, I'm sure it will be worth the wait.

Let Flamingo Diner's and Torico's experiences be a lesson to any Jersey City establishment that dares to think about renovating.

You missed the perfect opportunity to cleverly use the phrase "Anybody have the inside scoop??" !!

I'd also like to know if anybody has info on Torico's, which appears destined to miss the entire warm weather season.

Personally, I think they are crazy to spend what has to be at least $100k, when they did fantastic business prior to the remodeling. Part of the charm in my opinion was the no-frills, somewhat old-timey atmosphere in there.

I'd guess it's not going to be open in time for May/June when it starts getting warm. It looks like they are not even remotely close. It really sucks, as I am a weekly customer in the warm months, and I'll miss it.

Yeah, it's not cheap, but IMHO, it's delicious, and the staff are very friendly. Torico's is the kind of local business that makes me love JC and I'm excited for the renovations!

I can't wait for a taste of their avocado ice cream ... the best!

Also, I've never found them to be chintzy ... when I buy a pint they actually over-fill the container.

for many years i scooped ice cream and made cakes at magic fountain on the boulevard (which originally was a carvel.) an ice cream shop opened on india square (kwality ice cream i believe) and knocked us right out of business. everything we did was homemade so going to torico's reminds me of those days, just a bit pricier.

there's still amourville on central ave in the heights, but they seem to be more cake oriented than cones/shakes.

they're renovating. they had the architect plans up inside before they closed for the season. the drawings were gorgeous. hope the actual results are the same (and not like the Newark Avenue Streetscape fantasy).

the owners of Toricos have owned that entire building for decades, so staying closed for months won't torpedo them financially like it did Ox.

It's just not worth it, one scoop and your done. Very hard to sustain a business like that and make a profit at the same time. Bring your ration card when you go next time.

really? They're prices are pretty standard, and they have a lot of great flavors. Better than any carvels or crap like that.

There's Tommy Two Scoops, but that's gelato. And they do milkshakes, but it's super runny because it's gelato.

I peeked in the other day and it doesn't look anywhere near complete. Wooden frames and stuff but absolutely no finishing going on.

I like Maggie Moo's in the mall - very rich and creamy and tons of great toppings. Reasonably priced.

If you want a healthier option where you create your own dessert, OYO Yogurt in Hoboken rocks!!! You are given a cup to fill with yogurt and toppings on your own. They weigh it and you pay 55 cents an ounce. There's 4 yogurt flavors you can combine any way you want. The toppings include fresh fruit, candy, cookies, granola, nuts, coconut....

Yeah I think so - they said that they weren't going to change the inside that much, mostly just exterior and the upstairs space.
