I think you are right on both counts, but I'm not sure what the federal government can do to curtail gang violence short of ending the war on drugs.

never gonna happen. too much money to be made off of prisons. and too easy for them to keep their thumb on black america.

So you are ready to make that assessment after 4 days of Trump being in office? What was your stance on Obama when he was still blaming GWB well into his second term?

LOL.... I am still waiting for Trump to appoint the 80 CZARS that Obama appointed his first week in office to totally by pass congressional oversight and immediately implement the progressive agenda and its important items like ensuring the federal agencies had gender free workplaces {SARC}

Yup, Obama doubly screwed us, by fostering lousy economic policies tied with artificially low interest rates. The 1% did well under him, though.

You are just throwing bombs.... not sure you even know how martial law declared... you certainly do not know the difference between Chiraq and Newark.

All I did was cite a previous Federal response tactic to other troubled cities. Why Chicago has been ignored while hundreds are shot or killed annually was a disgrace.

That was a federal response to a police involved shooting, not gang violence. Is the federal government going to step in and prosecute every gang shooting?

I lived in Chicago. The shootings there are the one of the biggest challenges facing the city. Everyone is well aware of the problem.

You did live in Chicago??? How long have you lived here that you think the violence in Newark is worse than Chicago. As I said in an earlier response the takeover of police forces was a DOJ "tactic" that I used to demonstrate how the DOJ could intercede to stop violence in Chicago without jumping to martial law immediately.

Curious why you purposely crafted your opening statement to be so "vague" in terms of identifying what town or city might under martial law? Coming to an unknown town or city near you MARTIAL LAW! Oh those nasty Republicans.

Can't wait for you left wing loons to recycle the same conspiracy theories the right wing loons used during the Obama years. FEMA Shelter Camps deployed by Obama are really concentration camps etc.....

I am hoping his planned budget cuts go through (ie. a 20% reduction in the federal workforce) and his infrastructure projects get bogged down in Congress.

The United States has a massive debt bubble to deal with. Right now interest rates are basically negative in real terms, which has made the debt cheap to finance. A lot of the debt notes though are short term. A spike in interest rates will increase debt service significantly.

Other debt issues:

Social Security went cash flow negative in 2010. In the not too distant future, SS payments will be reduced.

Medicare is even in worse shape than Social Security.

State level public pension funds are in terrible shape. If there is a market correction, the chances of a State level pension default(s) is high (IL and RI will probably be the first to go). Since interest rates were kept so low, more and more of the pension assets were invested in higher risk investments (chasing yield). China for example has a very high debt load denominated in dollars. As the dollar strengthens, those debts are going to get harder and harder to service, which will lead to defaults.... which means investors (i.e. pension funds) will have to write off assets.

MDM, the key is economic growth. And at this point, it's grow or die.

Yes it will and "president" trump is only going to make it worse.

https://www.nytimes.com/2017/01/24/us/ ... t-deficit-trump.html?_r=0

"After seven years of fitful declines, the federal budget deficit is projected to swell again, adding nearly $10 trillion to the federal debt over the next 10 years, according to projections from the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office. The numbers reveal the strain that government debt could have on the economy as President Trump presses to slash taxes and ramp up spending."

With that said murders in Chicago are generally trending downwards. They haven't gone north of 600 since 2003, and only two years above 500 since then.

Even I think this is an alarmist statement, and it doesn't really help anyone. Federal assistance to a police force does not equal marshal law. Even if the feds 100% replace the local Chicago PD, that still doesn't make it martial law. We would have to suspend the normal rule of law, and I sincerely hope that wouldn't happen.

That sounds even worse. Ceding local control of our police forces to the federal government is a frightening proposition. If Trump is serious about fighting crime in Chicago he should legalize drugs.

So far his executive orders are in line with what is granted under the Constitutional executive powers. i.e. Restricting VISAs of specific nationalities. Carter did the same with Iranians during the hostage crisis.

Trump first has to get all his Secretaries through the Senate. This takes time and there has been some resistance to a few of the nominees, in particular his pick to run the CIA, who's confirmation was delayed.

What will come next will be the appointments making changes to their respective agencies. I expect a lot of people will be leaving the Dept. of Energy as a start.

Everything else Trump wants will take an act of Congress. The first big battle will likely be over the budget. The Trump budget from what I have read is very close to what the House has proposed. The Senate has already signaled it will resist cutting a number of programs. i.e. Senator Murkowski of Alaska has already pledged to oppose any cuts to taxpayer subsidies of rural airline service.

When is Trump going to get over the fact that he already won the election and get on with doing something other than signing executive orders. At this rate it looks like he'll have more executive orders signed than Obama did in 8 years. I guess it's okay when their guy does it, but with Obama it's called presidential overreach

Trump is still going on about how we won the popular vote, if you don't count all the voter fraud in CA. This has been proven to be false MANY times. Is his ego really that fragile that he can't even handle losing the popular vote as long as he still won the election?

Geez. Talk about someone that needs a safe space.

I agree. We need to move on. I thought Trump said it best after the election. If getting the popular vote was the way to win he would have campaigned differently. Leave it at that! I guess he really feels he can prove there was that much fraud. There are much more important issues in my mind.
