I just heard it! like the voice of an old friend.

I think the train whistle is not as audible in warmer months. We'll probably hear it again as the weather continues to cool.

In the meantime, we have crossing guard whistles to hold us over!

I grew up not too far from the mainline of the LIRR in Queens and I always found the distant sound of the train passing through in the middle of the night very soothing. Same thing with the squeeling sound of the freight trains entering/leaving the over 150 year old tunnel at the western end of 10th street.

I like this. As a kid that grew up on the NE Corridor line, I heard train whistles all night and now equate that with comfort.

I like sounds of life, people living, etc. Please don't jump on this. I obviously don't enjoy nuisance, but train horns, folks enjoying themselves, babies crying, dogs barking at unusual sounds, occasional house parties...it is New Jersey to me.

Living on the Western Slope you can hear the freight trains blowing their horn as they travel by. Years ago the local kids would infiltrate the meadows and rob the freights, 8 track tapes and small electronics were a big hit. Also before the further development of Secaucus the other kids would ride their dirt bikes from the Heights section into the Secaucus meadowlands revving their engines.

A couple of years later, I moved into the same apartment building where she had lived before.

I still like to hear the trains singing.

I can even hear the PATH's gentle lowing once and a while, from about eight blocks away, but it's usually on a very quiet night, and usually it's on a cold night.

Very cool, elsquid. I hear the squealing of the train cars too. Even cooler are the horns of the ships in the fog at night. They blow them like crazy when the visibility is 100 feet...

Yeah it's noisy, but it does add to the landscape in ways and reminds us of the industrial past.

That's perfect.

From now on, if anyone asks me "what's that sound", I'm telling them it's the whales coming into the harbor.

You're hearing the freight trains under the turnpike. I live right there on Newark/Pavonia across from Dickenson and can hear them every morning at like 4am wheels squealing and blowing their horns. There's 2 sets of tracks that run there one on a bridge and one directly under it right below dickenson running around the cemetery. The dotted lines on the map are all the tracks running thru there (although some of it is the PATH underground i think.

I don't think I'm hearing Hoboken trains on 1st Street.

Well what I've seen by driving around Hudson County over the years is those Conrail trains pick up freight in Newark Bay from those huge container ships that come in. They are then picked up by 18 wheelers, but I can't imagine Conrail doing such a short journey?

CSX is doing a long journey. Most of the boxes coming off trains at Little Ferry are coming from Chicago (or the Port of LA/LB via Chicago). The 18 wheelers then pick up the boxes and take them to distribution centers where the contents are repackaged and delivered to retail stores, etc in this region. Norfolk Southern has a yard with a similar function at Croxton (across the street from the USPS facility on County Rd). Outbound trains coming from the Port may pick up or drop off a few boxes for NYS&W railroad to schlep to Syracuse.

Most of the freight coming from Port Newark/Elizabeth that needs to leave this region goes out on Norfolk Southern's line paralleling I-78 into PA and beyond or north along the National Docks, through Jersey City, and north on CSX River Line to Albany before hooking a left and heading west toward Chicago.

Here's a list of some of the major intermodal terminals in the area, from the Port Authority's website. Several of these facilities are adjacent to the National Docks line, which passes through JC (over Newark Bay, under the TPK extension, through Bergen Tunnel, etc.)

By Monmouth & 7th I can clearly hear the eerie squeal of the wheels on the rails as a train goes through at night. I'm sure it's that train's horn I hear. The Path is in a ravine and sound would be directed mostly straight up.

A few points:

PATH trains entering the tunnel between JSQ and Grove sound their horns as they enter the underground section.

All noises, but particularly the deeper sounds of train horns travel greater distances in cold weather.

There are above ground freight tracks criss crossing the city.

I've heard that too! it's definitely not the light rail (which is more of a toot). I think there's a freight line somewhere to the northwest of us.

Then again the light rail horn sounds nothing like a whistle.... so I guess I'm not sure either.

It's probably the light rail. I know sometimes they blow the horn when pulling into stations. Although that's usually more at night when kids are messing around on the tracks.

Does anybody know what train it is that I've been hearing blowing a whistle in the mornings, downtown? It's clearly an above ground train, but...doesn't Jersey City NOT have those? LOL. Am I hearing the Hoboken NJT trains? I wouldn't think that I would hear those from way down near Van Vorst Park.
