I have done busines at Hudson Toyota (numerous times, personally and with others) an have no real complaints about them.
Do your research before you go in and you'll be fine. I will say I was not impressed with Hudson Nissan, but this was in early 2000's and I'm sure the people working then are no longer there.

I already did. And from comparing anecdotes I've heard, it was far more pleasant than running around from dealer to dealer agonizing about whether you're getting a decent deal. And thank you for clarifying your vague disparagement of the Costco deal. Now readers know what "inconveniences" you are talking about.

That's great you test drove a car using Costco. You left out a few missing details...before you drove out a minimum 30 minutes to Wayne, one way,
and passed by Rte. 440, you filled out a costco form, and then called the dealership, and make a greater commitment (mental sunk cost in terms of time & energy) to purchase the car and from that dealership. There's nothing wrong with that - its just takes more time and is slightly less convenient. Is that clear (or banal) enough? Instead of harping on a trivial detail, why not write about your experience with the Costco auto program?

Then what EXACTLY are you saying? The only inconvenience was going to a Wayne dealership, which many here advocate anyway.

I did not write nor "believe" that you cannot test drive using Costco. It's just less convenient.

What makes you believe one can't test drive if using the Costco program? All it does is set the price. We certainly test drove the car.

I understand the sentiment and hesitation full well about car dealerships on Rte. 440. Such was conveyed to me by my friends while shopping.
However I had a good experience purchasing a car at Hudson Nissan. The sales and follow-up service were very good. I think the key here is to be an informed customer and know exactly what you want. I did my research using the internet. You can find the true price of the car, as in what the dealer pays, the average markup, inventory at local dealerships, etc. Before I set foot in the dealership, I knew the model car, its options and color that I wanted. I also got quotes from multiple dealerships via email. I was able to test drive the car at the dealership, too - which is notable if you are considering Costco, TrueCar, CarsDirect, etc. With that it saved me a lot of time, made bargaining easier for me, and a much easier sale for the dealer. Its mutual. I know there are multiple Nissan dealers, so its easy to walk out and they know it. For them, I'm an easier sell because I know what I want and am not consuming a lot of their time. In the end, I spent about as much time with the purchase and for about the same price a car broker would offer. That's my experience as a 1st time car shopper. In short, use the internet and email to your advantage.

When looking for a brand new car I too went to Rt. 440 they are the worst. Some poor grandfather with his grandson was getting overwhelmed at the Toyota dealer he must have been footing the bill for the kid's car. The salesmen were like vultures. When I went to the Honda dealer the sales guy barely spoke English I immediately left. Suburu's sales staff looked half asleep with no inventory to show. Nissan was a decent place with good deals some friends had good things to say about the Nissand dealer on 440. Chrysler was ok too an older man who tried his best to show and sell me a car. And yeah forget about Ford no better than the rest.

Not sure, but I don't think the 3.5% sales tax applies to cars.

Agree with previous posters, avoid 440. I've shopped at the Nissan dealer there in the past and it was an abysmal experience.
Also agree with the other poster about looking in Wayne, etc. Wayne Hyundai was a great experience and I got an awesome price on a Sonata (I know that's not the brand you're looking for, just sharing the experience).

I had a bad experience at Bellevia they mis-diognosed a warranty problem and I was charged $50 for it. I never had them do the thousand dollar "job". I went to the dealer where I purchased the vehicle. They told me it was the thousand dollar catalytic converter which there is a U.S.A. warranty for 8 years no matter what brand, so there was no charge. I wrote to the manufacturer of my vehicle and got my $50 bucks back. Bellevia stopped selling my car's brand. Not sure who made that choice.

I have heard nothing but horror stories about the dealerships on the back road.
Last car I purchased was at Bellevia Chevrolet/Buick in Rt. 17S in E. Rutherford. Cordial & no hardsell. Mechanics were nice & thorough.

The Saturn dealership was pretty good. Their service department told me one issue with the throttle body was so minor, they didn't even bother to charge me. Too bad Saturn went bye-bye.

I am going through a similar process.
Quite honestly, I must echo the comments made by others. The 440 dealerships are just terrible. I visited the Jersey City Ford dealership and it was atrocious. Not very professional, not at all clean, and not what I was hoping for. I visited the Ford dealership in Summit and it was a completely opposite experience: professional staff, super clean facilities and much more pleasant. As Brewster mentioned your best bet is the Costco Auto program. They already have pre negotiated prices with dealerships and there is no haggling or negotiating. It is by far the best price you will find, without a doubt. I have now gone through them twice (a motorcycle and a car) and have nothing but great things to say about the program and the process. If you are not a Costco member, it would be worth it to join just for this.

I might be misremembering, but I don't think it applies to cars. That would be an insane advantage that other dealers would have a hard time overcoming. Edit: nope. http://www.jcedc.org/Pages/UEZTaxBenefits.pdf

Isn't one advantage of buying in JC (everything else being the same) the 3.5% sales tax?? One way or another I'd use that as leverage if dealing with an out of area dealer.

If you are a Costco member, they have a member price deal with certain dealerships. We got our Soul at one in Wayne at what seemed a competitive price for a low inventory popular car. Service at the JC dealer seems avaricious, but we don't want to do anything to jeopardize the 10/100k warranty.

Last year I purchased a car in north Jersey...Was wary that the stock in Jersey City might have been tainted by Sandy. Though over a year has gone by some dealers may be holding vehicles from then. Be cautious.

Think about the people that work at, say, Home Depot or Best Buy. Now imagine trying to trust them with giving you information about a car.

I shopped in several of the car dealers on 440 and each experience was bad. Consequently, I never bought a car from them. I would try the suburbs like Wayne and Morristown. Also, I suggest once you identify the type of car you want, go to three different dealers to work each price against the other.

Good morning everyone! Looking to purchase a new vehicle, possibly a Jeep. Has anyone had a positive or negative experience with the dealers on 440? Any other recommendations? Thank you!

The further you can go, the better selection, prices, and service you'll get. The places on 440 We've shopped have been way overpriced and the salesmen have been unprofessional and not very knowledgeable.
We had a good experience at Mahwah Ford buying a used car. The dealership looked like it was from the 1950s but the staff was trustworthy and enthusiastic about the cars. We got a great price from them after doing our research on autotrader for comps. Do your research. Scour the area. Befriend a Car and Driver subscriber. Be prepared to walk away from a car if you can't get the price to where you need it. Let the salesman try to figure you out. A good salesman will appreciate the cat and mouse approach.

I went to Bellavia Chevrolet on Rt. 17S, Rutherford(?). Very pleasant to deal with. As far a dealerships go, they are a 'softsell'. In 2005 went in looking at one thing - a 2002 Malibu just coming off a lease, about 30k mi, 4cyl, $14,000. I walked out with a 2004 Olds Alero, 18,500 mi, 6cyl, $12,500 with an extended warranty included. I still have the car, it has about 98k & still runs pretty darn good. Have used their maintanance a couple of times & found them fairly fast & pleasant to deal with.

Muller Toyota, Route 31, Clinton NJ. Worth the hour drive. Bought my first Corolla there in 1988 from a friend's recommendation. 300,000 carefree miles later I bought a 2002 Corolla from them which is still going strong. They let me charge $3000 on my credit card and drive away with my promise to send them a check for the balance in a few days. The whole transaction took about an hour - amazing. Call me nuts ( go ahead), but these guys are honest and professional beyond belief. I went in with the Consumer Reports invoice price for my make and model and they went $400 over for their profit. They continue to win awards for customer service year after year. I look forward to buying my 3rd car from them in a few years!
