cars taking the Greene Street route speed like theres no tomorrow! I've had closed calls! And there are cars that turn even if they have the red light and nearly hit pedestrians crossing on the corner! There should be a surveillance camera. It's getting ridiculous since the street is straight and many use it as a short cut.

There are people who aren't downtown?

Erie and 2nd... and 7th and Jersey are the worst for both drivers and pedestrians...I have almost been t-boned at both intersections numerous times....I try to obey the pedestrian law but have had SO MANY bad experiences with almost being hit from behind ,honked and cursed at...or the worst those who try to just cut around you to mow down the pedestrian you are trying to let cross...as a driver i have to say many pedestrians in JC are not too bright as I have had my heart in my throat because of their poor judgement...my 2 cents worth of complaints

If you're not dead you can tell the driver that hit you..."I'll own what you own" ! Safe drivers value their ass ets.

On this map, you can see all the reported road fatalities for the past 10 years. Doesn't look like downtown Jersey City is all that bad, actually.

I hope the pedestrian is OK, too. It's just horrible how drivers in this town routinely blow through stop signs and ignore the stop-for-pedestrians law.

I rarely see any driver actually stop at a stop sign. I wish I had a dollar for every time I crossed a street while a 3-ton SUV crept toward me. I guess those jerks don't know the meaning of "stop" (ie, absence of motion) and consider it "stopping" if they only menace pedestrians rather than running them over.

Enforcement of the laws would help the situation, and so would a revival of common courtesy for our fellow citizens. I won't hold my breath on either count, but I will continue to come to a "full stop" (apparently not a redundant term in Jersey City) when I drive. I just hope I don't trip or slip the next time I walk across the street in front of a creep who doesn't know how to use his/her brakes.

Also, consider the chart here:

Not much good though if head lights are off...

There is no stop sign at Erie and Newark.

I am amazed at the number of drivers who don't put their headlights on when it's raining. I would love to see the cops start ticketing people for that violation.

agreed. Until they start ticketing, even on a semi regular basis, drivers will take advantage, esp on streets like Erie on the way to the tunnel.

With the new law a car must stop for any pedestrian at any intersection (not just where there's crosswalks). If only drivers got into the habit of being more aware at intersections. but accidents happen hope the person is ok.

While I don't know anything about this particular incident, another possible issue is that many people park to close or in crosswalks, making it impossible for drivers and pedestrians to cross intersections safely.

I only saw the aftermath. I was in the house and saw the police/ambulance lights and checked it out from my window. It was really dark out and a crowd was around the victim.

The pedestrian had the right of way. There was a stop sign. Who knows who is responsible for what. It's crazy to drive here and crazy to walk here. So many people pull far out beyond the stop sign to see if they can cross the Erie/2nd death stretch so I am guessing with heavy rain & darkness they didn't see the pedestrian.

The driver was there. A young woman. She was talking to police.

I think with the holidays coming, people are driving even crazier b/c they are so distracted and stressed...

Who had the stop sign the car or the pedestrian ? Did the driver stay at the scene or was it a hit and run. Most of all was a cell phone being used at the time of impact ? Also was either the driver or the person that got hit with it ? Lately people aren't even aware of their surroundings they just move along without breaking a stride not having a clue.

A pedestrian was hit about 10 min ago by stop sign on 2nd crossing Erie. It looked like they were going to be ok but carried away on stretcher.

I feel like you roll the dice any time you drive or walk around this town :(
