"Solomon?s victory may be attributed to growing concerns about the impact of a citywide reevaluation of property as well the rapidly rising rents in the downtown and waterfront portions of Ward E.
Behind the scenes, those opposed to Fulop and Symes raised questions about Symes? association with big landlords and local developers. These attacks appeared to have some effect on Symes. In the waning days of the campaign she lashed out at her opponents for their ?unfair? portrayal of her as a front for real estate interests. Going into the runoff, Symes was seen as a frontrunner since she had led a field of six candidates, and received 2,593 votes to Solomon?s 2,077 on Nov 7. Although unsuccessful Ward E candidate Nicholas Grillo gathered 916 votes on Nov. 7 and later endorsed Symes, his voters appeared to have turned to Solomon instead." This is a non-issue. He thanked Rebecca for running a positive issues oriented campaign in part of his speech, or another one.

What do you mean James? "another candidate".
That other candidate has a name: Rebecca Symes. Really. If that was your attempt at being conciliatory, you need do better

Torres is a hack. If you know how to stroke him, he'll essentially let you write his column for him.
Did anyone else find this line in his column disturbing? "Ridley is well-spoken and an African-American woman." I don't think I've ever heard "well-spoken" used to describe a white person - as though it's surprising to the person using the term that black people can be articulate. Quote:

This reads like a humor column.
Just 1 week before, Augie Torres said that Symes had the tacit backing of the administration. Now he says that actually, Fulop never liked Symes. Just 1 week before, he said that Symes had labor backing. Now he says labor was wary of Symes, and that the Solomon campaign was actually meeting with labor the whole time. Just 1 week before, Torres held the endorsements of other elected officials as proof that the Fulop machine was working behind the scenes for her. Now he says that they "never really work" for the candidate they endorsed. I really wish I had a job where I could make stuff up and back it up with "sources say."

Ward E race lovelier the second time around: Political Insider Updated 3:09 PM; Posted 7:07 AM By Agustin C. Torres The Jersey Journal The focus of my last two columns were on the Ward E runoff race between two relatively new Jersey City residents more interested in running for office than putting down roots. Now we ask: "Who can say what brought us to this miracle we've found?" Several ward runoff battles were mildly interesting but the true contest was the clash of the two Democratic Party trained candidates, Rebecca Symes and James Solomon. It was difficult to pick a winner. My mistake was attending a debate for all Downtown council candidates. Symes, 36, and Solomon, 33, stood out from the pack. Opponent Jake Hudnut coming in a shade behind by exhibiting his strident dislike for the administration as well as matching socks and tie in a bid to standout. This ward sparked my interest. http://www.nj.com/opinion/index.ssf/2 ... i.html#incart_river_index

That's a positive start. Curious to see if he votes based on the values of his Healy/Matsikoudis diehards (many of whom don't live in Ward E) or if he looks to his actual constituency. FWIW, 83% of Ward E voted for Mayor Fulop last month.

This sounds like the James Solomon that I know. Would expect nothing less.
"For those who voted for another candidate on Nov. 7th or Dec. 5th, you have my commitment to do everything to earn your trust over the coming months and years." James Solomon for Ward E Council 20 hrs ? Thank you. From the bottom of my heart, I want to thank Ward E for honoring me with the opportunity to serve as your councilperson. My commitments to you are these: I will work extraordinarily hard to make development work for you. I will work extraordinarily hard to make our day-to-day government work for you. I will stand up for progressive values. And I will partner with those in power without being beholden to them. For those who voted for another candidate on Nov. 7th or Dec. 5th, you have my commitment to do everything to earn your trust over the coming months and years. We live in an incredible community. I'm blessed to raise my family here. Let's work together to ensure downtown remains a community for everyone.

James Solomon won. He is Ward E's councilman- elect. That being said can we stop gloating about it. A poor winner is worse than a sore looser. If he hasn't already James should out to opposing factions to bring our ward together. Mayor Elect-Fulop had Dan Levin on a transition team committe. Until Next Election. Best Phil

For this runoff, it is known that many Fulop supporters voted for James, while many Fulop critics supported Rebecca. It is known? By whom? I thought it was the exact opposite. Those opposed to Fulop's record supported Solomon. Isn't that the record he was attacking? Wasn't he branding himself as the new young Fulop of 8 years ago? No more status quo?

Mayor Fulop received 83% of the vote in Ward E. Not knowing the exact history that seems like a pretty big vote margin historically. For this runoff, it is known that many Fulop supporters voted for James, while many Fulop critics supported Rebecca.

Josh - you are unhinged. I didn?t lie about anything. If you feel I lied about you, please let me know (either here or in person). It certainly wasn?t my intent. I wasn?t going to get into who told me what about the campaign on here - also happy to discuss in person. The ?mommy mafia? comment, while perhaps in poor taste, was a nod to your incessant use of it. The comment about me being resentful and ?others having done better than me? is beyond baffling. I really have no clue what you are talking about or alluding to.

I thought that you were better than that. But in the end your resentment of others who did better than you puts you in the same boat. You lied about the campaign, and lied about me. That is disgraceful.

Wow, what went wrong for Symes? I personally thought she had this in the bag.
In the end, I don't think this makes a difference in the grand scheme of things. Fulop still has a supermajority and most parcels of land in Downtown are already purchased and have approved development plans. Has Solomon taken a position on how he plans to handle the reval when he has about 5,000 angry constituents screaming about their taxes going up? All those high rises adding to the ratable base (99 Hudson) might sure look good at that point.

Funny how the local organizer for Clinton's campaign relied on Trump tactics and sentiment.
Actually, its not funny. It's grotesque.
