The couple bought TP at Costco, then again 5 days later? WTF? No one can go through a Costco sized block of TP in 5 days! They insulating their house with it?

I think that couple was an example of an attorney and a willing participant (conspirator?) sneakily setting up a lawsuit. Someone probably noticed the sales tax charging error by Costco, and decided to make a buck by having a documented set of instances in which sales tax was improperly charged so that they could bring up a lawsuit.

Same for me, I have never been charged sales tax there, in fact they always round the price to benefit the customer. if your total comes to $16.54 they will only charge you $16.50[/quote]

had the same experience there several times.

Should Lee's supermarket on Grove St be charging tax on items such as unprepared foods like vegetables, fruits, chocolates, dairy etc ? Usually they put a 7% charge after they ring in all the items ? Is that legal ?

I was just about to add the same! The UEZ designation is not a blanket designation that forces businesses to only charge 3.5% sales tax. Each individual business is free to apply to participate in the program. Of course, not doing so would likely mean some loss of business (especially if direct competitors do choose to participate) but some businesses do choose to skip participating in the program because of the extra paperwork.

The UEZ is irrelevant anyway because this is groceries we're talking about, for most of which there should only be 0% tax. Non-food items and food that has been prepared in the store (i.e. sandwich platter, ready-to-eat meals made in the store - not frozen dinners) are usually taxable. Charging sales tax on almost anything else in the store is illegal.

you are right. 3.5% on taxable items and it should be no tax on fruits, vegetables, dairy etc. i hope its just plain ignorance or lack of knowledge although it shouldnt be the case.

7%? LOL... Lee's is in the UEZ. It should be 3.5%. I'd chalk it up to Hanlon's Razor though.
