I have seen some Orthodox Jews near Journal Square here and there. There's a Synagogue on Cottage St between Summit and JFK Blvd.

My understanding is that JC used to have large Jewish community (though I don't think as much as Newark).
I haven't seen many Orthodox, but I know a lot of secular Jews from high school and college that live in JC.

I have not noticed any orthodox Jews in the Heights perhaps you are referring to the number of apartment buildings that are owned by them. Although the area is becoming quite Asian with a large Indian population and Chinese students both living in dorm like surroundings I have yet to see this Orthodox group around. There are Muslims, Filipinos and other Asians in other parts of J.C but not any Jewish folks. I think they reside mostly in the Union City area near 32nd St. not nearly as Asian as J.C. though.

Deli King Linden is a quick drive away. I've used it to cater events at Temple Beth-El and have occasionally made the trek to satisfy a craving.

Shop Rite has tubs of chicken fat (schmaltz) that is kosher in the freezer next to the kosher turkeys, and kosher frozen whole chicken. The tubs look like cottage cheese type tubs, and the brand is "Empire"

I have seen duck fat - super-schmaltz - at Shop-rite at the right end of the leftmost meat case. It is not kosher, however. Also, if you buy a boneless duck breast (same location) you get about a 1/2 cup of rendered fat. You also have a tasty dinner for two.

with the number of orthodox jews moving in from brooklyn to areas like the heights and the western side of downtown, i wonder if some enterprising soul might not open up a place.
i'd shop there occasionally just to pick up some schmaltz for making latkes and the like

As someone has already stated, Jersey City did indeed have a sizable Jewish presence probably up through the 1960's (I know for a fact that there was a Yeshiva school through the 70's). However, the observant population has not remained in numbers, so kosher eateries are rare. I believe there are a handful in Elizabeth which still has retained an orthodox presence. There are also kosher establishments on Staten Island, which is probably even closer than Elizabeth, depending on where on SI.
As a cultural Jew, I'd love it if someplace opened in JC which had authentic and good kosher/kosher-style cuisine. The closest thing anyone suggests is Wonder Bagels which is (I know I will get hate mail for this) SO not authentic! There, I said it. But, I certainly still want them to prosper as a business .

I think the Indian spot is Kosher due to it being vegan. There was another Kosher spot on Newark ave where the Greenpoint book store is now, but not enough foot traffic I guess, but this was also back in 2007. I would say there would be quite a few popping up in the next year or two. We have been getting lots of Israelis renters on our side of town and most of them are kosher eaters.

Thanks for this info. Do you know if that Indian place is certified Kosher or just Kosher by nature of being vegetarian? Good to know about the Caterers. I've been seeing a few more Orthodox Jews around downtown, so I wouldn't be surprised if another kosher place pops up in the not too distant future. There are large Jewish populations in Bergen county and multitudes of kosher restaurants there within a 30 minute drive.

I am guessing you never been to the Journal Square area or Greenville... There are lots of synagogues that are converted into churches. There is one near Bentley that is still a functioning synagogue. My neighborhood where I live was once very Jewish. There are also a few converted synagogues downtown , the one on Grove street comes to mind, which is now a mosque. Also if you have time pull up the tax records on who owns the buildings on Ocean, Bergen, and MLK. There is a presence.

It's interesting that JC doesn't have much of a Jewish presence. Did it ever?

closest you'll find is probably all the delis in Manhattan, like Katz. But they're overpriced. Just make matzoh ball soup yourself, it's really easy and the stuff I've made is better than most delis, imo.

Not in Jersey City, not even Hudson County for that matter. Bayonne used to have a store but that went like everything else kosher. It's basically Italian and Polish Catholic specialties in the lower part of Hudson. You may have to travel some.
