Because it's a big, obvious way to make it look like they're doing something. And to prove, I heard 1010WINS mention it in a short blurb this morning.

Jersey City Mayor Jerramiah Healy looks out the window of the "Eye in the Sky" surveillance tower after a press conference concerning two crime fighting initiatives on Dec. 11, 2012 at MLK Hub in Jersey City. It is used for crowd management, emergency responce, port security and allows law enforement to rise above a second story roof line. Alyssa Ki/The Jersey Journal

What is the eye in the sky good for? Slide shut that tinted window and who's to know if someone takes a swig or two of jameson?

well to be fair, there are a ton of people that work here and go through the plaza to get to the path station and light rail. So no the worst place to have it at the moment.

Shall we do a "Where's Waldo" for the Eye in the Sky? Maybe the eye is keeping watch over the statue of Peter Stuyvesant...

I believe the conversation on JCList gave notice to this problem, the police department do not like to be under the microscope.

Totally useless in that area. I did see it down the Hudson Mall one time.
It was in the parkin lot around Christmas but yes, now sits by the exit of the Holland Tunnel.

cameras and other information gathering tech on the "sky watch". It was there for a reason and PR was not it.

Apparently JCPD ordered the old model of this "Eye in the Sky," which has to be towed into place, and requires manual deployment of stabilizing legs so it won't tip over. That means it's much less functional, and if you try to deploy it on a street rather than in a parking lot, you need to use multiple lanes.

Call me crazy, but I'm sure there are better ways to spend $100k on policing.

How about put the 'eye back in the garage' and get the cops back out on foot patrols?

I was wondering the same thing - I drive past there a couple times a week and didn't understand why it is sitting there.

The $100,000 "Eye in the Sky" continues to sit at 14th & Jersey as it has since January 16th. It is symbolic of a waste of taxpayer dollars and an apparent lack of concern on the Police Departments part that the public sees it here doing nothing in the war on crime. This device should be anywhere but where it is now. Journal Square, MLK Drive, the Heights, Lafayette. Move it around every week. Concerned citizens should press the PD on this issue.

First I think in this day and age there is no need to have some highly paid cop sitting in there -- it works without that -- and besides can you imagine having to sit up there on MLK Blvd on a Saturday night -- talk about target practice!

Since last Wednesday, January 16th, its sitting at the intersection of Jersey Avenue and 14th Street adjacent to the ramp leading to the NJ Turnpike with its light blinking. This is hardly a high crime area and is also patrolled by the PAPD so what is it doing at this location and for so long?

Agreed this is wasted next to the ramp, I see it everyday on my way to work and wondered why it is there with a flashing blue light on top and blacked out glass so you can't see if anyone is there at all.

Because of it's close proximity to Nyc. You might even find that it will become a permanent fixture there, and for good reason.

This is the other side of the Holland Tunnel from Downtown -- the Holland Garden Public Houses and the Saint Lucy Homeless Shelter both have had issues...
