Yvonne, I agree it's safer when people are out on the streets, but not literally on the street. Then it becomes unsafe.

I'd be in favor of letting the local businesses on that stretch decide what they want. If they want to make it a ped-only street, the City would then get figure what is the best traffic-flow solution around it.

For starters, do this for a small portion - the little India blocks, and also from Grove to Jersey. Knock down the Morlee's building at Newark & Erie & Bay and make that huge triangle into a central square / park sort of thing.

It'll be our version of New York's Broadway.

Yep, definitely avoid it. Actually, why not avoid most of Jersey City, while you are at it. It would make my day easier.

But I do have to admit, it is madness on that stretch. You should check it out for Navratri.

It is definitely an 'avoid' driving street... I will admit to yelling at folks that have j-walked in front of my car...

I don't think it's so much double parking. It's just congested traffic on such a small street. Most of the time it's someone trying to get into a parking space, a full parking lot or side street.

But speaking about double parking, it's nothing in comparison to Hoboken or even worse, Ironbound Newark.

I'm sure they'll get right on that.

Here's my secret trick for dealing with it (hope too many people don't read this): Stay away from Newark Avenue.

Yup, and it's worth staying away from all of Newark from Tonnelle to Palisade during the day if you're just passing through. I'll go up St. Pauls to 139 to Palisade, just to avoid all the nonsense on Newark. Trust me, it's faster.

I grew up in Hoboken - double and triple parking was a way of life. I have noticed from reading the newspaper, Little India, has the least amount of crime including Downtown. It is difficult to mugged someone if people are on the street. Too many witnesses.

If they do it there, they will have to do it everywhere. Double parking is huge nuisance in this town.

Try driving anywhere on a Saturday Morning and all you will find is double parking and police cars just cruising by like nothing.

They probable could, but don't because then someone would complain that they are "picking on the Indian Community".

That section of Newark ave is always chaotic. Can the city do something about it? Issue tickets to people who jaywalk or double park?
