I have heard Baker does good work too and I am considering them for work on our house. Are they priced on the high or low end?

We have a set of old heavy wood double doors and want to have them restored to their original glory. Does anyone have a recommendation for current contractors/master craftsman to (e.g. repair, clean, paint or strip & stain, install all new hardware). Also, need all new surround. Can't seem to find some of the previous recommendations like Baker Doors. Has anyone dealt with Amighini Architectural? Work on website appears to be top notch. Have an appointment w/them, but wanted 2 comparisons before making a decision. Thanks.

Just bought a condo in an older Victorian building. We have pocket doors that need repair as there is a safety concern and I'd like to clean them up a bit. Any recommendations?

I had custom closets installed last year and had the doorway cut out the width of the actual closet. I had a contractor cutout the doorway and install some doors but they did a horrible job, the job looks unfinished. I want somebody that can drywall the surrounding around and install new closet doors. Since the door on the closet was smaller when they removed it there was a space in the floor without hardwood (a very small part) and I need that part patched up. Can anybody recommend a contractor to do this?

hey everyone,

just a quick question. we called Platinum and got a quote for some crown molding in our living room and dining room. The guy was great, really nice and professional, but i was a bit shocked at the cost quoted. The total was 2 grand for 2 rooms of crown molding (4 1/2 inch roughly) The total legth is about 60 feet per room.
We may get a 2nd quote, but we did like the guy and from horror stories i've heard, i'd rather go w/ someone w/ good recommendations, but it just seems so high.

anybody have this done and have ideas of costs?

thanks!

2K is extremely high for this job unless you're asking for a stain grade solid hardwood moulding like oak. Is that why it's so high, the materials? Because if you're going to paint it, you really don't need master craftsmen to do this, caulking is amazing stuff. BTW- never miter the inside corners, they must be coped, google it.

Call Willow Ironworks and ask to work with Kevin Gill, their carpenter and door expert. He did a fantastic job for me. He's quick, pleasant to deal with, and reasonably priced. If anyone wants to PM me, I'll send you Kevin's direct number.

for crying out loud. this is why i stopped using this site. I ASKED if it was reasonable, how the hell do i know, i do not do this for a living. christ.

thanks for nothing lafayette.

i would do it myself as most of the projects we do, but there are some tricky corners due to the hot water pipes that go up the side of 2 walls, so i'd rather pay someone to do it right, then have a DIY job thats not quite right.

I'd love to have platinum do it, but again, we never even got a call back.

Erinmaiden, i dont know why I hit a nerve with some but If you have a question, ask a professional with a good reputation. While growing up my dad was a carpenter and the neighbors always came with questions which he gladly answered. Why ask people on this site that are just going to give opinions of pricing and quality. If you have a vision problem do you go to a dentist? I am disappointed that people use this site to bash businesses. Anyone here can lie and give someone a bad reputation on a whim. That's what I was trying to say. Not every contractor is Evil out to get your money...god knows my dad helped so many for FREE!......Another suggestion, when you call a recommended company and you start with "hi my name is so and so, Im looking for an estimate on a door....it would cost more money for the guy to come out and give you price then do the actual job. I hope this helps you. Please be honest and say that you want a very good job done, on time, with a licensed contractor and cheap and That my friend doesn't exist.

$2K sounds about right. He orders materials from Dykes just outside Hoboken and good molding is pretty expensive stuff.

Platinum quote work by the foot on their website and are very fair - but I know for a fact that they are booked until 2009 at the moment. (I've started to use other carpenters.)

You can buy a Craftsman mitre saw from Sears, some screws and do it yourself in a weekend. Simple 45 degree cuts. If you're looking for ceiling to wall molding work - it doesn't get much easier.

$2,000 is definitely not a lot of money for that project. It amuses me that people must really think that contractors make peanuts. That's at least a 2-day job, and they have to pay at least one helper at $150 per day. Plus cost of the wood, gas, overhead, insurance, etc. I'd run from a contractor that bidded at anything LESS than $2k, for fear of terrible results!

Sorry for the tangent. I don't know any carpenters in the area though...sorry.

Just wanted to bring this up again.

We decided to go ahead and have platinum do the crown molding, but after recontacting them, we never heard back. i guess our job was just too small.

so anyway, anyone else have a good recommendation for a carpenter to do crown molding??

thanks

Just to follow up on this. I called Platinum Construction and made an appointment for them to look at my job. They never showed up for the appointment. When I called, they gave me an excuse and said to call back to reschedule, which I did. I never got a return phone call. I'm sure they're fine carpenters (probably have all of the work they can handle). I'm pretty sure my job was too small for them. So, if you're job is small don't call them.

I've used them for my house & also for my store.

They're quick. Their prices were great plus I was very satisfied with their work.

I've recommended them to a few friends, neighbors and other people on jclist & have heard good things from them as well.

Plus they're local and give free estimates

Check them out.

Hello, I have several doors in my house that don't close properly. The doors were either improperly installed to begin with, or the floor warped and now the doors don't close all the way. Can anyone recommend a contractor for this kind of work?

TIA
