And then we ask why our police (general) behave poorly and aggressively when you have a dumb-ass chief like this.

Interesting how we have fire and police 'chiefs' that have the power to dictate and terminate subordinates in the 'spotlight' on threads ... maybe a review of ALL disciplinary action and arrests they have made be up for review ... I wonder if subordinates ever complained about these ass-wipes and disciplined for it ?

The former police chief of Suffolk County pleaded guilty on Friday to federal charges stemming from accusations that he beat a suspect in custody, threatened to kill him and then coerced his fellow officers into covering up the misconduct.

The former chief, James Burke, 51, who was known for his swaggering confidence as the leader of one of the region?s largest police departments...

The charges against Mr. Burke stemmed from an episode in December 2012 when Christopher Loeb, a heroin addict who financed his $100-a-day habit by breaking into cars, was arrested on suspicion of stealing a duffel bag stuffed with cigars, pornographic DVDs and sex toys from Mr. Burke?s police car.

He was brought to a precinct house and shackled to the floor.

In a 2013 court hearing, Mr. Loeb testified that when he asked for a lawyer, one detective told him, ?This isn?t ?Law & Order?; you?re not going to get an attorney.?

When Mr. Burke entered the interrogation room, Mr. Loeb ?was handcuffed and chained to an eyebolt fastened to the floor,? according to prosecutors.

Christopher Loeb Credit Suffolk County Sheriff Department
?Chief Burke grabbed me by my cheeks and hit me on the top of my head,? Mr. Loeb testified during his 2013 trial, during which he was found guilty and sentenced to three years in prison.

Mr. Loeb responded to the thrashing by calling Mr. Burke ?a pervert? and mocking him for the pornography he found in his car, according to federal prosecutors.

At that point, prosecutors said, Mr. Burke ?went out of control, screaming and cursing at Loeb and assaulting him until a detective finally said, ?Boss, that?s enough, that?s enough.??

After the interrogation, Mr. Burke pressured the detectives who witnessed the assault to conceal it.

New accusations have surfaced that allege a disgraced Long Island police commissioner may be linked to the Gilgo Beach murders.

John Ray, the lawyer representing the family of New Jersey escort Shannan Gilbert, alleged that another Long Island escort had a rough sexual encounter with former police chief James Burke in the same area where several of the bodies were found, NBC New York reported Thursday.

The report said the woman, identified only as "Leanne," described being choked and being forced into rough sex with Burke during a party on Oak Beach a year after Gilbert went missing.

AMITYVILLE, N.Y. -- A New Jersey woman who died near where victims of a suspected Long Island serial killer were found is finally being buried.

Family attorney John Ray says Shannan Gilbert's family will gather at New York's Amityville Cemetery tomorrow, March 12. Ray told Newsday earlier this week that an independent autopsy was completed Monday. He did not disclose the results.

The 24-year-old from Jersey City, who authorities described as a prostitute, disappeared on May 1, 2010. Her remains were found in December 2011.

Slain Jersey City woman Shannan Gilbert, L.I. murders subject of new book

By Alexander W. Silady/The Jersey Journal
July 24, 2013 at 10:33 AM

Robert Kolker, an author and contributing editor at New York magazine, has released a new book that hits close to home for some Jersey City residents.

The book, Lost Girls, released by HarperCollins on July 9, is about the unsolved killings of five escorts on Long Island, believed to be the work of a serial killer. One of the slain women, Shannan Gilbert, was a resident of Jersey City.

Gilbert, 24, went missing in May 2010, sparking a far-reaching investigation that gripped public interest for months. She worked as an escort over Craigslist, and had disappeared after meeting a client in Oak Beach, Long Island at about 2 a.m. on May 1. Her driver described her as "delirious" and "irrational" on the day of her disappearance, and said she had a history of cocaine abuse and suffered from bipolar disorder.

Four women's bodies were found on the south shore of Long Island in December 2010, and though all of them were believed to be murdered escorts, none of them belonged to Gilbert, prolonging the investigation and the heartbreak of Gilbert's friends and family.

The search and mystery as to whether Gilbert was dead or alive came to a close a year later when Gilbert's remains were identified in December 2011. It is not known who killed her or the other four women whose remains were uncovered, though the cases are believed to all be related.

Remains, clothing found in Long Island marsh during search for Shannan Gilbert: report

Tuesday, December 06, 2011, 4:17 PM
By The Jersey Journal

WNBC is reporting that clothes and remains have been found in the area where investigators are searching for Shannan Gilbert, a Jersey City woman who disappeared in May 2010.
Investigators searching a Long Island marsh for clues in the Shannan Gilbert case have found remains and clothing, WNBC-TV is reporting.

Divers found the remains in knee-deep water in the marsh in Oak Beach, sources told the station.

The Suffolk County police, however, dispute that remains were found and says only that items that may be tied to the case were found, the report says.

Gilbert, of Jersey City, was last seen running from a home in Oak Beach in May 2010 in the area investigators are searching.

Her disappearance prompted a previous search of the nearby Gilgo beach area that ultimately resulted in the discovery of at least 10 sets of remains, but investigators have said they do not believe Gilbert's case is related to those.

Two NYPD cops with history of hooker problems 'under suspicion' for 'Craigslist Ripper' Long Island murders

By DAILY MAIL REPORTER
15th May 2011

The case of the so-called 'Craigslist Ripper may have gotten even more bizarre.

The New York Post reports that two NYPD police officers are under suspicion in connection with the case, in which up to 13 prostitutes have been murdered in Long Island and Atlantic city.

Parts of their bodies have been found along a secluded section of Long Island beach over the past several months.

Criminologists had said it was possible the killer or killers worked in law enforcement, or at least was familiar with police procedures. Recent estimates have put the number of alleged killers at two to four.

The New York Post reports that one of the officers being looked at by Suffolk County detectives had been forced out of his NYPD job in the 1990s 'when his supervisors learned he spent time pursuing hookers and paying street walkers and down-and-out women for sex while he was supposed to be on patrol'.

The man reportedly resigned 'under pressure' during internal investigations.

FBI seize New York pimp's computer in hunt for 'Craigslist ripper'
According to The Post, the other officer still works for the NYPD, but at a desk job.

That man was allegedly stripped of his gun and badge years ago for allegedly assaulting a prostitute and getting arrested during a sting operation.

He is said to be barred from making arrests or responding to emergencies.

An unnamed source told the paper: 'They couldn't prove anything, but they didn't trust him'.

It is currently unclear if the two officers know each other, or if the police have any specific evidence against them to connect them to the Craigslist killings.

Investigators said the two officers are not the sole focus of the ongoing murder investigation.

In recent weeks, criminologists had begun to piece together a profile of the serial killer or killers, said to be a white male in his mid 20's to mid 40's, financially secure, well spoken and drives a nice car or truck.

Able to charm his Craigslist victims into a false sense of security, he will also have access to burlap sacks as part of his job and will have been treated for poison ivy infections received as he disposed of the bodies in thick undergrowth.
The New York Times came up with the chilling portrait after talking to retired and current criminal profilers familiar with the 'Craigslist ripper' case.

Speaking to the paper, Scott Bonn, an assistant professor of sociology at Drew University in Madison, N.J. said: 'This is someone who can walk into a room and seem like your average Joe.

Who Is The Craigslist Ripper

Profilers have described the man as:

He is most likely a white male in his mid-20s to mid-40s

He is married or has a girlfriend.

He is well educated and well spoken.

He is financially secure, has a job and owns an expensive car or truck.

He may have sought treatment at a hospital for poison ivy infection.

As part of his job or interests, he has access to, or a stockpile of, burlap sacks.

'He has to be persuasive enough and rational enough that he is able to convince these women to meet him on these terms.

He has demonstrated social skills. He may even be charming.'

He is also, according to the experts, very familiar with the Long Island beaches where 10 remains have so far been found.

Jim Clemente, a retired FBI investigator in the agency?s behavioural analysis unit, added: 'He did not stumble upon that location. He has some familiarity with it.'

The 'Craigslist ripper' case started in December after the disappearance of 24-year-old Shannan Gilbert, a New Jersey prostitute who advertised on the site.

Looking: K-9 unit police use a cadaver dog in a residential area of Oak Beach, Thursday, Dec. 16, 2010, on New York's Long Island

Although her body has not been found, the remains of 10 others have so far been uncovered with Maureen Brainard-Barnes, 25, Melissa Barthelemy, 24, Amber Lynn Costello, 27, and Megan Waterman, 22, the only identified victims so far.

Detectives have also investigated the possibility that the same serial killer may also be responsible for the deaths of four prostitutes in Atlantic city in 2006.

On Long Island, police returned for another day to the area subjected to land, water and air searches by the FBI and New York authorities from Suffolk and Nassau Counties.
Their most recent discovery earlier this month was two sets of human remains, including a skull.

Nassau Detective Vincent Garcia said police hacked through brush with machetes and chainsaws and used shovels to dig through sand to look for clues.
'When we found the skull, we were hoping if we went back in we'd find a little bit more,' Garcia said.

Search: Police continue to search the Long Island area for more bodies in the 'Craigslist Ripper' hunt

Nassau officer James Imperiale said police found two human teeth about a foot from the skull. It appears the teeth are related to the skull but authorities will run tests to confirm that, he said.

Imperiale said police also found a shoe but were unsure if it was relevant to their search.

'We're not sure if it has anything to do with the investigation but we did take it away as well,' he said.
Sources indicated to the paper that the killer may have a heavily ritualistic element to the way he carries out the murders.

As the first four prostitutes discovered all disappeared in July or September, Mr Clemente said: 'There may be a seasonal nature to his connection to the area, or to his fantasy and ritual.

'It may be the time his wife or kids or parents are away for the summer. There are many possibilities.'

Forensics: Officers examine an object on the side of the road near Jones Beach in Wantagh, N.Y., Monday, April 11, 2011
The use of increasingly rare burlap sacks also provides another clue as to his modus operandi.

As burlap is no longer a commonly used material, it is more easily traced than plastic.

Mr Clemente added: 'To me, it takes away from his forensic sophistication and criminal sophistication and adds to the possibility that he is more interested in this ritual aspect.'
The experts also focused on the sadistic element of his crimes, particularly the fact he repeatedly used one of the victim's mobile phones to call and taunt her teenage sister.
Mr. Clemente said: 'That gives me an idea that he is a sadist.

'That would be reflected in his relationship and jobs.
He is the one who laughs when a cat gets run over or a kid falls off his bike. He likes the suffering of others, and he really likes it when he can cause it or witness it.'

I'm disappointed with the Jersey Journal. This story has been ongoing for a year - they've probably done a dozen or more stories on it - and they still have to refer to the missing woman as "Jersey City prostitute Shannon Brown." The word prostitute is in that article three times, twice as an adjective for the missing person. If she were a dental hygenist, would they mention that three times in every article?

I realize the case seems to be tied to prostitution, but really? They have to go into all that just to report a vigil was held? Her family is probably devastated to begin with (I can only guess) and they have to have that shoved in their faces every week or two? I'm sure there were many other facets to Shannon Brown's life that define her as well as, or better than, her poor career choice.

Family and friends of missing Jersey City prostitute Shannan Gilbert hold one-year anniversary vigil at Long Island enclave where she was last seen

Tuesday, May 03, 2011

NEW YORK - Family and friends of a missing New Jersey prostitute have held a vigil on New York's Long Island marking the one-year anniversary of her disappearance, the investigation of which has led authorities to the discovery of several dead bodies and speculation about a serial killer.

Newsday reported about a dozen people Sunday held hands, prayed and walked into the gated community in Oak Beach, where police say Shannan Gilbert of Jersey City disappeared the night she met a client.

The search for Gilbert uncovered 10 sets of human remains along a parkway near Oak Beach since December. Four have been identified as those of other missing prostitutes.

Authorities investigating the case of a possible serial killer say they plan to broaden their search beyond the barrier island. State police began searching the southern Wantagh State Parkway yesterday.

New Skull and Remains Found Could Also Be Victims of Long Island Serial Killer New York Magazine 4/12/11 at 09:05 Police found a ninth set of remains and a skull along a string of beaches in Long Island's South Shore yesterday. The skull was found on the outskirts of a bird sanctuary in Tobay Beach close to Jones Beach State Park. A cadaver dog found the remains a mile and a half away. Both are believed to be human, and possibly the ninth and tenth victims of a serial killer suspected of murdering prostitutes. If the cops' single-killer theory is correct, it would be one of the biggest cases in New York since "Son of Sam" killer David Berkowitz was convicted of six murders in 1977 and Joel Rifkin, who confessed to seventeen slayings after being arrested in 1993. All of the remains have been found on the north side of Ocean Parkway, obscured from view in the shoulder-high brush. The eight bodies previously discovered were in different stages of decomposition, including one that could have been there for up to two years. Future searches are an ongoing possibility as police have yet to find Shannan Gilbert, a 24-year-old prostitute who disappeared last May and prompted the hunt in the first place. ============================== Official calls Craigslist Long Island serial killer an ?animal? www.examiner.com New York, NY - On Monday, police began searching Nassau County for more evidence related to the Craigslist Long Island serial killer case, as one official called the elusive slayer an ?animal.? So far, nine bodies have been found, as well as the remains of what authorities now say is an 18-month-old infant. Police, however, are still unsure if the child?s body is related to the murderous rampage of the serial killer. ?We want to bring to justice this animal that has obviously taken the live of a number of people,? proclaimed Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano. Although speculation has abounded as to whether police have a suspect in the case, ABC News reports a source has revealed that authorities are looking at several persons of interest -- some of them with links to law enforcement and who have knowledge of beaches in the area. Due to the killer's apparent knowledge of police procedure and techniques, some reports have compared him to the fictional serial killer Dexter Morgan from the Showtime series 'Dexter,' who works as a blood splatter analyst with a major police department. Four of the identified victims were prostitutes who advertised services on Craigslist, as did missing New Jersey woman Shannon Gilbert, who was not among the remains that have been found to date. She vanished in May 2010 after leaving a client's home and reportedly running into the night toward an unknown direction. ==================================

Some serial killers are obsessed with "purity".

They think prostitutes are "impure", so they kill them to "purify" the twisted world they inhabit.

I hope the cops have a beat on this guy and he will be caught soon, now that the bodies have been found and his mocking cell phone calls to the families of the victims have been examined.

Very sad.

Because no one really cares about prostitutes. Look at how many died before people even realized they were being picked off and killed. They are an easy target and are unnoticed with they are killed. I hope they find the guy soon.

because prostitutes will go to a deserted place with a stranger, and don't usually get reported missing for days or weeks, giving the killer a good head start.

sexual predators are usually established members of their communities. their death, while welcomed by many, would be quickly noticed and investigated.

NY and AC Mass Murders May Be Linked: MyFoxPHILLY.com

NY and AC Mass Murders May Be Linked NEW YORK POST - New York police believe they know the identity of the serial killer responsible for the bodies recently found on Long Island beaches, the New York Post reported Friday, citing sources. Cops were "looking at somebody," said a law enforcement source with knowledge of the investigation. He refused to elaborate. It comes as police were exploring a possible link between the killer -- suspected of dumping the bodies of eight victims along a remote Suffolk County beachfront -- and the grisly murders of four prostitutes in Atlantic City, N.J., in 2006. "Our homicide detectives are in touch with the [Atlantic City] police," a Suffolk County police spokesman told reporters. The Post reported Thursday that one of the New Jersey victims spent five weeks on Long Island with her husband shortly before she vanished on a bus to Atlantic City. Hugh Auslander said he and his wife, Kim Raffo -- a crack addict and prostitute -- moved from Florida to a motel in Jericho, N.Y., in September 2006 to work for a friend and attempt to regain custody of their two children, who were placed in foster care in New Jersey. Raffo fell apart when she could not get her kids back, he said. "That drove her nuts and she started doing crack again. We were fighting, and she hopped on a bus to Atlantic City. I never saw her again." Meanwhile, sources told the Post that the serial killer changed his MO during his bloody spree -- altering the way he dumped his victims near the Oak and Gilgo beaches. The four remains discovered in December -- all later identified as Craigslist prostitutes -- were wrapped in burlap. But the new discoveries -- one found last week and three more on Monday -- were dumped in a different manner, and were also found farther east off Ocean Parkway, the source said. Cops have yet to determine how long the remains had been there, and said the new discoveries may predate the others. "We don't know their sex, we don't know their age, we don't know anything about them," Suffolk Police Commissioner Richard Dormer said from the mobile command center at Oak Beach. Nassau and State police were set to launch a search Monday along either side of Ocean Parkway west of where the remains were found. They will use ladder trucks from area fire departments and officers on horseback to search the dense brush.

Shannan Gilbert Not Among the 8 Bodies Linked to Long Island Beach Serial Killer Victim Who Launched Investigation Still Missing as Experts Profile Serial Killer 3 COMMENTS BY RUSSELL GOLDMAN April 5, 2011 A missing prostitute whose disappearance led New York police to stumble on a serial killer's dumping ground on a secluded beach is not among the eight bodies who investigators have found and identified, police said today. Shannan Gilbert, 24, disappeared in May 2010 after arranging online to meet a client for sex. Her disappearance triggered a search in the scrub brush along a remote beach halfway between New York City and the Hamptons, a popular summer getaway spot. In December police found four skeletal bodies, all of them women and all of them prostitutes, but none were Gilbert. This week, cops found another four bodies. Those bodies have not been identified, but Suffolk County Police said today none of the remains belonged to Gilbert. Cops obtained DNA samples of Gilbert's family last year and were able to quickly check the remains against those samples. The police conclusion suggests that Gilbert is possibly a ninth victim of a serial killer. "The search of the area will continue tomorrow," Suffolk County police said in a statement today. Cops in rain slickers searched the brush along Gilgo Beach again today looking for the bodies of more women potentially killed and dumped in the thick vegetation, while other detectives are working to create a profile of the man who is stalking prostitutes online and killing them. Suffolk County police are keeping a tight lid on many of the investigation's details, commenting publicly only on the search efforts -- the canine units with cadaver sniffing dogs, and a dozen police recruits from the academy brought in to help search for bodies. Experts outside the investigation consulted by ABC News, said cops are compiling a vast database of clues and working up a profile of a single serial killer suspected of killing at least eight women, most of them prostitutes, and dumping their bodies on Gilgo Beach over four years. In December, while searching for Gilbert, police stumbled on the killer's dumping ground, an area that has turned out to be a 7-mile stretch of beach as more bodies were discovered this week. more click link... http://abcnews.go.com/US/shannan-gilb ... -serial/story?id=13303092 ========================================= Resized Image Two photos of Shannon Gilbert from a missing persons handout. The 24-year-old Jersey City prostitute went missing in May, and police suspected she may have become a victim of a serial killer on Long Island. Missing Jersey City woman is not among 8 bodies found dumped along N.Y. beach highway Tuesday, April 05, 2011, 6:08 PM By The Associated Press OAK BEACH, N.Y. ? Detectives searching for a missing New Jersey prostitute have uncovered the remains of eight possible victims of a serial killer along a remote New York beach highway, but said today that none is the woman they have been looking for. "I'm just shocked," Sherre Gilbert said in a brief telephone interview after learning from Suffolk County detectives that her sister, Shannan Gilbert, was not among the eight bodies found along Ocean Parkway on Long Island in recent months. "I am still hoping for the best outcome." Shannan Gilbert, 24, who worked as an escort, was last seen last spring in Oak Beach, near where the latest remains were discovered, after apparently meeting a client she had booked through Craigslist. The bodies of four other prostitutes, all of whom advertised their services on Craigslist and were in their 20s, were found along the same highway by police searching for Gilbert in December. A fifth body was located last week about a mile from where the first four were found and police on Monday said they uncovered the remains of three more people. Police have not identified any of the most recent victims and have not definitively linked them to the remains found in December. Detectives suspect a serial killer but so far have no suspects. The four dead prostitutes were found amid a 4-foot-tall tangle of sea grass punctuated by scrubby pine trees. Authorities have identified them as Amber Lynn Costello, 27, originally of Wilmington, N.C.; Megan Waterman, 22, of Scarborough, Maine; Maureen Brainard-Barnes, 28, of Norwich, Conn.; and Melissa Barthelemy, 24, of Buffalo, N.Y. Although officers have searched the area several times since December, they intensified a search of the 7.5-mile area on Monday. After searching almost exclusively on the north side of Ocean Parkway, which leads to the popular Jones Beach, police academy cadets, K-9 units and other investigators moved to the south side of the roadway today, searching a wide swath of sandy beach down to the ocean. The north side of the highway has proved a challenging search for investigators, who have had to contend with a thicket of underbrush and evergreens, peppered with a variety of trash, from helium balloons to car tires to beer cans and bottles. Although police were able to quickly rule out Gilbert as a victim because of forensic evidence they had on file in her case, identifying the four recently found bodies could take weeks or longer, officials have said. The New York City medical examiner's office is assisting Suffolk County officials with their investigation. Gilbert had arranged to meet a client in Oak Beach last May. A resident of the gated seaside enclave told The Associated Press today that a woman believed to be Gilbert came to his door around 4:45 a.m. on May 1, pleading for help. Gus Coletti said that when he attempted to call police, she fled. He said he suspected the woman may have been intoxicated or high on drugs. A few moments later, an unidentified man in a sport utility vehicle drove past the house and said he was looking for the woman, but then took off. Neither the woman nor the man was seen by the neighbor again. The client Gilbert had arranged to meet was investigated by police but has not been named as a suspect in her disappearance. Police said their search of the area for additional victims would resume on Wednesday.
