A deal may be in the works in the grocery business industry. Sprouts Farmers Market (SFM) soared in early trading after Bloomberg reported that privately held Albertsons was in talks with the organic grocer about a potential merger. A deal would add to Albertsons? portfolio of supermarket brands, which includes Safeway, Vons and Shaws.

Wonder if they could get sued by the main Sprouts if they found out about this.

I don't think I could open my own fast food place and call it McDonald.

I wonder the same thing; I'm certainly not an expert on trademark law so I am not going to speculate. However, maybe they think since the chain Sprouts does not operate in the Northeast they are too far away to be noticed?

I was a bit bummed during my first shop last week, too. I was able to get a few things I needed (fresh coffee beans for one). I wanted cereal, but only saw some bags of granola. It wasn't until I was leaving that I saw the cereal was lined up on top of the refrigerator case, about three feet above my head. Odd place for it.

Someone had mentioned the cost of a pint of Ben & Jerry's. It's funny, but I suppose that does give you a sense of mark up. We tend to do a lot of weeknight shopping at Greene Market and so far the prices at Greene Market look better (and they actually have what I need).

I am happy to be able to buy wine right off the PATH, but did anyone go in there? When I stopped in last Monday, it was like 85 degrees in there! Not sure I want to buy wine in a store with that temp. Hopefully they'll get that sorted.

Hoping they get through their initial opening bumps in the road and listen to the needs of folks who will shop there. Such a great location.

Hero69, I like about this place, too. I don't get all the posts whining about prices and low-cost ham. ShopRite is a few blocks away. Go there for basics. Sprout is aiming to provide a boutique food experience with brands you don't find everywhere. It's not perfect, but it's a good store, it's good for the neighborhood, and I think it will get better over time.

i actually like this place...great for lunch time crowd. of course, the prices and selection don't compare with shop rite but of course that is not the intent. the prices are quite comparable /cheaper than similar type places in manhattan/brooklyn.

No, I don't doubt that the place is lackluster. It was simply that there were three posts in a row from users with NAME### and fewer than 5 previous posts.

It has definitely happened here before, much like on Yelp, that a place opens and competitors or friends/family try to swing public perception through false reviews.

Gross. What a waste of space.
I rather make a few stops and shop at the baker, the cheese shop, Korean market, and fish shop. I'll end up spending the same amount of money but have fresher foods and support local people.

I agree - totally let down. You definitely can't do a full grocery shopping here and the workers were pretty much incompetent.

Completely agree with others on here that the prices are absolutely insane, and their selection and layout is odd. The owners don't really seem like they know what they're doing.

I was looking for sliced ham - they seemed to have all of these high-end prosciutto, Italian sliced meats, but no basic ham (I usually get the Applegate farms).

I saw the produce section which was very limited, and the lack of meats. I did see the flower section too; I was wondering why they would have flowers but no meat and very limited produce??

The only reason I went in there was because I could not get an Amazon Fresh order due to the snow, and needed some essentials. I think Hudson Greene is much better; it's expensive and a bit far from our apartment, but the quality is much better.

And further, it bothers me that they ripped off the Sprouts name, which is on the west coast. Things like that bother me; be original!!

Stopped by this weekend. Looks like the same type of products and owner as Hundson Greene Market. Some strange things:

- no fresh meat section. I asked and they do not have plans to offer this basic super market staple
- produce selection is small and didn't look fresh
- poor layout in general with checkout areas in the middle with no real way to communicate when someone is free to check you out
- entrance on Columbus was locked but entrance at path station was open

That said, they do have a flower area (in case you want flowers instead of chicken pork or beef). Their alcohol prices look no better / worse vs the other liquor stores in the area.

Essentially you can't do a full shop here. What's the point?

Truely disappointing. The owner missed the mark here. Idk why it's so hard to put in a decent grocery store in downtown JC. 6 min farther walk to the shop rite it is.

Soft opening and the place is weak azz fuk.

Seems like an extension of NYC Korean deli with a jazzed up interior.

Sure hope they step their game coz the food look barfaliciois.

But considering the location they will probably thrive as have a small wine and beer section happening and that will prolly float the lease.

Speaking of costs, will this impact the Whole Foods that is supposed to be built across the street?

I'd rather walk the inconvenient six minutes to Shoprite than pay a 60% price markup. Those prices are ridiculous.

Oddly enough I was doing just that this afternoon. Walking to SR, I overheard a couple @ Columbus/Warren. The store did not have something very basic and the alternate selections were expensive.

Hard to believe there is something more expensive that that drug/food store @ Groove. At least the ice cream is cheaper now.

Yeah, I love Sprouts - we used to shop there all the time when we lived out in CA. I don't think they have any stores in the northeast (at least as far as I know), but I definitely think they would do well here!

Definitely not a day care. You can see the refrigerator equipment through the window.

Well, that sucks. I was hoping it was the real Sprouts Market. Can't feel much confidence in a business that runs such a poor website, one that hasn't been updated in over a year.

I imagine it will be fairly small, but it would be great to have a place to stop on the way home from the PATH (when the Farmer's Market isn't happening ... and you know, before WF.)

A Sprouts would be awesome. For those not familiar with these markets, they are somewhere between a TJs and a WF. Definitely cheaper than a WF, good produce, kitschy (similar to TJs in style) and generally a very good place to shop.

I just checked the "Coming Soon" section of their website, but a JC location is not at all mentioned. I hope this pans out!
