Per a conversation I had with the guys at Maloney's: There used to be a lot of small butcher shops in J.C., but they all went under when the big stores started carrying steak. Maybe a high end one can survive. If the new place in the Heights can make it selling expensive cuts of meat, I would guess a store could make it in downtown. Maybe the concentration of vegans in DTJC is just too high for a high end meat market?

Other than the BJ's or supermarkets, what competition would it have? Given the DTJC demographics, I'd think a place that sold high quality meat would do well. Most people in DTJC don't have cars and can't drive to get their groceries. Maloney's is in a more car-centric area and still seems to be doing well.

Is there a reason why Downtown doesn't have a dedicated butcher like Maloney's? A good butcher is something every walkable neighborhood needs. The meat quality at Key Food/Stop Rite and the selection at 99 Ranch leaves a lot to be desired.

I have to amend my last post, apparently LaFrieda now is a supplier to Peter Luger's, they must've kissed and made up.

I'd say 'many' rather than 'most'. JC is home to another major supplier of top quality of beef, DeBragga and Spitler. And NYC top steakhouse, Peter Luger, doesn't buy from LaFrieda-LaFrieda wont sell to them, since they prefer to use several different vendors and that pissed off LaFrieda!

Most of the high end steak houses in NYC get their meat here:
http://www.lafrieda.com/ Maloney's deserves your business, unless you're a clueless DTJC noob.

IMHO, yes... the fat lines were pronounced throughout the cut. What they have displayed beef wise is impressive...... but really, really expensive..... Stopped by Maloney's today and picked up two 2.5 inch thick porterhouse steaks. Under $13 per lbs. That is a little more in my budget.

Ditto on the Pampita prices, crazy high. The stuff is good, mind you, and it's spotless inside. Their salsa verde rocks too.

Is the rib-eye well-marbled? The pictures on the website are generic and the ones in Yelp do not appear so.

I gave Pampita Meat Shop on Central Ave a try. I picked up a rib-eye, blood sausage, and some pork sausage.
The rib-eye was 5 star restaurant grade quality (wet aged). It was melt in mouth tender. Expensive though.. a single 2 inch thick rib-eye set me back about $40. Unfortunately, this is too pricey for my budget to buy on a regular basis. Got the blood sausages in the broiler right now, cooking for lunch. They also carry imported grass fed beef.

not sure if this had been posted, but if Tommy is retiring, is that the end for Moloney's? A JC treasure for real.

Great link. Thanks. Interesting last line in the next to last paragraph; if a butcher himself doesn't think highly enough of his chosen career and business to want his kids to follow on his footsteps, what hope is there for the survival of this type of business in the future?

Check out the NJ Hunter's Digest, there's a bunch of ads the advertise butchering and vacuum packing

Some of the butchers must be really busy. The bear hunt season just got extended.

Moloney's Meat Market on Newark is the only true butcher left in the city. He definitely has the skills to do what you need, but to break down game meat just for you he may not have the time or correct permits. You can give them a call though 201-653-1764.

Look on newjerseyhunter.com they will have a section for where to bring your deer. There isn't any that I know in JC but you can look around or even post on there.
I tend to bring my deer to a butcher upstate where I hunt or I do it myself.

Didn't know where to put this.
Is there a legit butcher shop around Jersey City, a place where I can take deer or boar to get butchered? Not looking for a Carrino Provisions 'purveyor of meat', where they buy low and sell high; looking for actual skills.
