Hoboken does have a movie theater hidden under the new bridge they built on 14th St. Nice place to get away from the crowds of teenagers if you need to see a flick.

my friend is a huge top chef fan and is visiting for the weekend and I think that we are going to head over (I have been a few times when they first opened.. I agree with PP - it's not bad but the bill turned me off to going there as a casual "hey let's grab something cause I don't want to cook tonight" place and put it into "date night" area which it wasn't the best atmosphere for)

any thoughts on a crew of like 6 people going there Saturday night at like 7/8 pm? do they do reservations? we wanted to just get an appetizer or two and a drink (the idea is to do a bit of a "bar crawl" around JC since her and husband are from the burbs w kids and "never do anything fun")

also thinking of a taco and margarita (or tequila shot) at Orale and maybe a drink and the bacon wrapped onion rings at Southhouse (never eaten there but heard that app is good and the drinks are great)

any other stops you think that we should make (mainly on Newark/Grove restaurant row since its going to be a little cold Saturday night and I rather not be walking all over town)

figure if we are still hungry after that we can always get a pizza or something late night

My general sense on dining out here in JC...if the total tab is $30-$45/person (an appetizer & glass of wine/beer & entree), it's a no brainer...I'll be there. When the tab goes >$50/person, it's a special occasion thing and suddenly I'm tossing restaurants in Hoboken and Manhattan into the contender list.

Left Bank Burger Bar is packed whenever I walk by...30 Acres was empty when they switched to prix-fixe only.

To an earlier post that mentioned "we need a theater or something to draw folks out", I'd argue that Hoboken has no such theater and restaurants there seem to be doing a brisk business.

LMFAO as if he would tell you!

Disappointed to hear that another restaurant might be closing. I agree that meals here can be hit or miss and that if it's busy it's hard to hear your dining companions. Also, not a big fan of the awkward concrete table... but I still want to route for strong restaurants for this changing neighborhood.
Based on Talde's social media there has definitely been a huge shift in focus to his new Miami restaurant instead of JC. The only JC updates I have seen in the last few months are for Miss Wongs.

Hmmm

"Adam Robb
?@lifevicarious
So Talde #jerseycity is in fact for sale, either on its own or with the Bell + Grey/Carrino Provisions space. (They share one kitchen.)

Is it a legit 24 hour place? I'm not really down there often, but could be a good spot after a show at Monty Hall or after Iron Monkey.

Yeah its 24 hours which is convenient. And the food isn't perfect but it's good enough diner fare. Service is friendly and they have a bar.

But omgggggg you guys it's not a diner!

No one was debating it being a diner- it's just not a good one. It also has a weird vibe and lacks the cozy atmosphere most people associate with a diner. I go there because it's open late and not because I'm craving it. Are we not allowed to want a better diner just because a mediocre one already exists?

Who said you're not allowed?

But what makes it not a diner? It has all the hallmark dishes. The presentation is a bit better, and the place is brighter and cleaner.

I get my taylor ham, egg and cheese on there frequently, and their corned beef hash is money.

easily my favorite place in DTJC. it's too bad they closed before Monty Hall opened. the post-show WFMU crowd would've kept them well in the black.

I agree it can sustain a couple of options, but only the best of them will survive. It just seems we've had a lot of upscale openings up lately and not a hell of a lot of casual family/dinner with friends, and IMO, that is a very big misreading of the actual market.

I love to eat out, and I eat out a lot, but I have a family and I'm not paying $30+ a head every time I go out (and much higher at some of the places).

but what about make it yours?
It seems like it's theirs now and they dont want it. :(

M & P is still good, but we only order certain dishes:

Burgers, Mac n Cheese, Bloody Mary

I'm also sick of the Brownstone. Service is awful, food served cold, thoroughly mediocre, unpleasantly and unjustifiably crowded on weekend mornings. DTJC definitely needs a better diner option.

Speaking about diners, does anyone know where one might get some good soulful chicken soup with matzoh balls?

They are talking about City Diner, not Brownstone.

Brownstone was on the show, not City.

I think it might be important to note that General Tso's anything is actually quite "American" - oddly that notion does connect us back to the topic of this thread.

The guy whose "American" restaurant serves General Tso's Pork Shank is probably not the last word on diners.
