The Brooklyn Bridge has roughly 4000 pedestrian and 3000 bicycle crossings per day. The PATH train, on an average weekday, has somewhere around 250,000 daily riders. (Around 10% of that is Hoboken.) Regardless of any virtues of this project, it is certainly not a replacement for the PATH. My guess is that it'd also be a nightmare in case of an emergency train shutdown, unless foot/bike traffic was regulated in those circumstances.

Interesting idea, not sure how good it is.. How safe would you feel walking across this lets say at 5 AM or 12 AM? this would be a muggers paradise. Who would police it? NYPD? JCPD? Since its not Part of Port Authority that leaves the PAPD out.

I know this topic has been brought up before on JCList -- it's a long shot and I'll probably be dead before it would ever be done. However, I do love the idea/drawing and would really love being able to walk/bike between JC and NYC. With all the push for "green" solutions, this should be up there. I wish JC officials would push the idea as it truly would create a big boom for JC. However, with NJ politics the way it is the idea of Port Authority losing all that bridge / tunnel tolls would likely have our wonderful poliiticians, especially Christie, shudder at the thougth.

While I'd love for this to happen, this is a pure pipe dream.
The cost to build it would be unimaginable. Also, they'd have to build it very high in order to let ships pass through, meaning pedestrians would face a huge incline in order to access the bridge. I'm not sure why someone wrote an article on pure folly, or why this is gaining any attention whatsoever. It's as realistic as proposing a zip line across the river. A waste of time for all involved, though I suspect some are just in it to make a name for themselves. This will never, ever, ever happen, nor will anything close to it happen.

I love the idea but there is no way in hell a bridge of that span would be built just for foot traffic. You can also bet your sweet ass that "toll" would be collected which would make the practicality of it, well, unpractical.

And - they can have CitiBIkes on both ends of the bridge! That would make it a 5-minute crossing (but most people would probably continue biking to their destination / subway station). Although with potentially a lot people crossing, I'm not sure how safe it will be.
But I love the idea nonetheless!!!

I love the idea.
But what's the capacity of the bridge? For example ? and I'm just spit-balling this ? if we have four people walking abreast, with groups of four spaced 10 feet apart over a span of 5000 feet, and it takes them 20 minutes to walk the mile, that's 6000 people an hour, ONE-way (4*500*3). If people start walking at 6AM the first cohort will arrive at Battery Park at 6:20 AM. By 9:20 AM 18,000 will have walked across. Is that a meaningful number? What kind of dent will that make in daily transporation?
