Again, love the idea but a more logical plan would be to open existing bridges/tunnels to pedestrian traffic.

You want people to walk through the holland and lincoln tunnels? Why don't you just force people to smoke 80 packs a day......same result you are looking for..

This is more what I had in mind, full participation! I like the douche sacrifice angle, but it would definitely hurt ridership.

You mean....a ferry?

Here's MY idea. Oar propelled longboats manned by commuters. You show up at the longboat dock, when enough people have turned up to man the boat, like 20, you row across, just like people crossed the Hudson for thousands of years before steam and bridges. It's kinda like Citibike for boats.

Kind of like galley slaves below deck.

With your support, maybe, just maybe, Jersey City can one day become as prohibitively expensive as NYC.

Why not obtain a unicorn that flies around and drops money for us? Think of how many problems it will solve. Poverty and then hunger will be dramatically alleviated.

I'll start an online petition and we will become one step closer to making our dreams happen!!

I believe, from looking at the site, that it will be around 200' high.

Of course, this is not a very serious design. They're just trying to get people into it. If it ever goes real... which it probably won't... it will need to be around the same height as the GWB or similar bridges.

Well said. Every time this stupid idea rears it's head it makes my brain explode with the wilfull lack of reality of some people. And I'll say again, never mind ferries, it would be cheaper to helicopter people across than to build a pedestrian bridge.

It'll be as safe as the other pedestrian crossings. Manhattan Bridge, Brooklyn Bridge, GWB etc are all fine.

It'd be Port Authority.

They have the authority, they've got a police force, they've got dinero.

Like it or not, they're the most likely candidate for operating this thing.

I'd pay $1 each way. All you need are turnstiles and a Metropass. Pick up some tourist dollars while we're at it. ;)

Uh... I don't know how to break this to you, but: They can't add pedestrian and bike sections to the Holland or Lincoln Tunnel. That's even less likely than building a new bike/ped bridge.

The Brooklyn Bridge has roughly 4000 pedestrian and 3000 bicycle crossings per day.

The PATH train, on an average weekday, has somewhere around 250,000 daily riders. (Around 10% of that is Hoboken.)

Regardless of any virtues of this project, it is certainly not a replacement for the PATH.

My guess is that it'd also be a nightmare in case of an emergency train shutdown, unless foot/bike traffic was regulated in those circumstances.

Well, they better think of something quickly because all of the houses which are valued for their proximity to PATH are going to lose some value when the PATH is no longer useful.

I know this topic has been brought up before on JCList -- it's a long shot and I'll probably be dead before it would ever be done. However, I do love the idea/drawing and would really love being able to walk/bike between JC and NYC. With all the push for "green" solutions, this should be up there. I wish JC officials would push the idea as it truly would create a big boom for JC. However, with NJ politics the way it is the idea of Port Authority losing all that bridge / tunnel tolls would likely have our wonderful poliiticians, especially Christie, shudder at the thougth.

While I'd love for this to happen, this is a pure pipe dream.

The cost to build it would be unimaginable. Also, they'd have to build it very high in order to let ships pass through, meaning pedestrians would face a huge incline in order to access the bridge.

I'm not sure why someone wrote an article on pure folly, or why this is gaining any attention whatsoever. It's as realistic as proposing a zip line across the river. A waste of time for all involved, though I suspect some are just in it to make a name for themselves.

This will never, ever, ever happen, nor will anything close to it happen.

And - they can have CitiBIkes on both ends of the bridge! That would make it a 5-minute crossing (but most people would probably continue biking to their destination / subway station). Although with potentially a lot people crossing, I'm not sure how safe it will be.

But I love the idea nonetheless!!!

I love the idea.

But what's the capacity of the bridge? For example ? and I'm just spit-balling this ? if we have four people walking abreast, with groups of four spaced 10 feet apart over a span of 5000 feet, and it takes them 20 minutes to walk the mile, that's 6000 people an hour, ONE-way (4*500*3). If people start walking at 6AM the first cohort will arrive at Battery Park at 6:20 AM. By 9:20 AM 18,000 will have walked across. Is that a meaningful number? What kind of dent will that make in daily transporation?

What if you could live in Jersey City and walk to work in New York City? Jersey City architect Jeff Jordan, crowdfunding enthusiast Kevin Shane, and many of their neighbors have teamed up to produce plans and renderings for the Liberty Bridge, a 5,000-foot-long walkway over the Hudson River. Think of it as their version of High Bridge.
