I was there on Sat. before the fest really got going. Drinks were just as good as anywhere. And, the food was what I expected for that type of place. Every one has there own taste. I found the South House quite fun.

Had dinner and drinks when it opened and went back this weekend. Unfortunately the food has gotten much worse. It's not very good at all. The drinks and bar set-up are still very good. Wait staff is ok. The music sucks. Not Texas or Southern Blues or anything playing from the artists hanging on the walls. If your supposed to be authentic, where is the Albert King, Freddie King, Johnny Winter, etc. It was like CBS FM was playing all night. All played out songs from the 60's & 70's. Hope the live music when it comes will be better. It's a big space with a comfortable layout. I think the biggest problem with the SouthHouse is the Facebook page for a year now really hyped it up with pictures of classic southern dishes and musicians, neither of which the restaurant serves or plays. As a reviewer said on Yelp, seems to be more surface than substance.

I agree 100% but (good) food is more important to me than these things. Lovely decor and humorous tenders don't make a great restaurant if the food is one big oil fest. If I want greasy chicken and bacon wrapped onion rings I can stay up the hill.

This place is beautiful and really enjoyable to have a few cocktails. The bartender was very polite and made us some different things to try. I do hope that their menu changes as they get a feel for the area and what sells but I wouldn't write it off so fast.

I didn't understand the poster's "fat shaming" sentence....everyone i saw there seemed happy, healthy and in shape. I guess the "fried chicken" set them off somehow

south house won't attract "fat, unhealthy people" any more than panera bread will attract skinny people. it will, however, probably continue to attract young people because it's a big, nice bar that is open late.

been there twice - very much enjoyed myself. they really did an incredible job with the interior and I'm excited for the rooftop grill and downstairs rec room.

a welcome addition to the neighborhood.

Logically speaking, you couldn't say, PERIOD. Based on your post, you haven't tried any entrees at SH. So, even if you have tried all the others mentioned by hero69, you wouldn't be able to say how they compare.

As for hero69, did you even read the post you quoted!? The OP hasn't tried the SH food. Why ask how it compares to Dino, Dallas BBQ or Soul Flavors? BTW, Dino and Dallas do not belong in the same category.

I've never understood this mentality. Who has a diet so strict that they can't eat some fried chicken or mac and cheese every once in a while, if they want to? Fat, unhealthy people eat like this every meal, every day - but, it's plenty easy to be in good shape and good health and eat like this once or twice a week.

absolutely. my people are lean and fit-ish, and this food is our JAM (when done right. Dinosaur BBQ in Newark gets many of my dollars.)

I've been to SH 3 times and there will be many more . It's a fun place with space to stand around the bar and talk over some pretty good music. The staff and bartenders are attentive and fun. The food is OK , I wasn't expecting a Danny Meyer experience here. Having been born and raised in JC maybe I just appreciate a place like SH being available to us intown. I will support SH , and others in JC. But if Hoboken frat boys start showing up , I will gladly embrace my Jersey City roots :)

They reached out to me a few weeks before opening, wanting me to join their kitchen staff. They were really gung ho about the food being a real centerpiece of the experience, but I never heard back from them after numerous follow ups.

I have been wanting to go but what I am hearing about the food is really a shame. It's not easy to execute a great menu in a larger space, but I just hope they don't go the route some places do where the food is an afterthought to the "drinks and experience".

Interesting... My first visit was fairly good. But my neighbors, who were initially enthusiastic about the place after their first visit, just told me yesterday that they went back for a second visit and that it was terrible: the "new" full menu made changes to previous offerings that miss the mark. Even worse, they had an issue with one of their entrees, so a replacement one was ordered, but the restaurant ended up billing them for both the original and the replacement. Bad business move, especially for a new restaurant that needs to rely on good word of mouth.

tommyc_37.

Totally agree with what you said about the music. It will help keep the DB's away. You have iconic pictures of these bands & musicians, makes total sense to represent their music too. If not, they'll be just another bar where all the music is the same and the photo's mean nothing.

Yeah, TV's do mess up that beautiful back bar. Golf...on a Sat night...Yuk. Put some videos or movies on. At least a ball game. Be different Southhouse. Jersey city is different. There is a large audience here waiting for a unique audio & visual experience.

Keeping my fingers crossed it will eventually turn out to be the place to be in JC. It certainly has the potential.

There is definitely more good than bad. My only feedback would be:

1. stick with the rock and blues, it will keep the douchebags out.

2. take out the TVs. It actually takes away from the beautiful space, and for what? Nobody is going there to watch golf, which was on when I was there Saturday night. Plenty of other places to watch a game.

I stopped in with my GF this past Sun for some eats & cocktails. First, let me state that I have been in the rest/bar industry for almost 20 years & know a few things about the pitfalls that can occur when opening the doors. To quote Mr. Clint. here is my take on The Good, The Bad & The Ugly.
THE GOOD: The interior and layout of the space is great! It's huge, although it has a very warm & inviting feel. Gas lanterns over the bar. Only 2-TV's for a change is welcome. Cocktails are excellent & unique. $10-$15 range. Also, good selection of beers & prices were pretty reasonable. We ordered a wide selection of items from the menu and most of them were pretty tasty & the portions were just the right size. Prices were a tad higher than I expected but not a big deal. I'm sure they'll keep moving up/down the next few months.
THE BAD: Wait staff seemed disorganized due to lack of training or not enough time spent on training. After it took some time to get waited on for drinks & food, I asked right after we placed our initial order If I could make a minor change to something, I got a not really sure and blank response. Then asked if the manager was available & was told there isn't one? She said she will get the owner but he never got over to us. A place of this size with a future roof & basement needs some experienced managers. Agree with other posts that AC seemed to be not working, although I felt some cold air from time to time. Dug all the old school pictures of rock & blues musicians like Muddy Waters, Zeppelin, Johnny Cash, Doors, etc. Was disappointed that they weren't playing any of their tunes the whole time we were there. Think it can only add to the overall unique & cool vibe. Finally, seems odd that there is no active web site. Know there is some info on the social site, but no menus, reservation info, brunch, etc?
THE UGLY: Definitely nothing to add in here.

Overall, more good than bad. Have some patience when you stop in. They are going through what a lot of restaurants I been involved with do; they built up to much hype & raise the bar (pun intended) to high. When restaurants & bars do this it just sets up you up for a bigger letdown & disappointed customer when things go off course which they always will.

I will definitely be back and wish them all the best and much success going forward. The SH is a welcome addition to downtown JC.

We tried again Saturday night, was told there was a 45 min wait, and got seated in about 5 mins...not complaining, but just kinda evidence of the disorganization with new staff. After that we sat around for about 10-15 mins trying to put in a drink order...eventually that all panned out and we got the drinks and ordered food which didn't take too long to come out, though they first served us the wrong food.

So BBQ wise, it's pretty damn good but it comes at a price of course. $12 for wings, $12 for pulled pork sandwich, and $16 for a brisket sandwich. Portions are adequate, but not Texas size huge. They said they will expand the menu with burgers and some other southern comfort food. I'm hoping their burgers are cheaper. Beer was priced well enough, $6 for a shiner, most of their cocktails in the $10-$15 range.

As kdu1218 mentioned the AC is not doing a good job, you just kinda sweat it out under the lights, though it looks like they have plenty of AC vents to cool the place down. The atmosphere and decor is pretty damn cool, apparently some of the photos/art are one of a kind. They are also going to be showing films up on the roof when it opens and have a separate smoker up there for food.

It has a lot of potential to be a cool hangout, I was just hoping the BBQ would be a little cheaper.

Was there on Saturday night and spoke to a staff member for a few minutes (the stairs he was guarding were right by much needed fans - AC was not doing the trick, if it was present).

The roof is supposed to have bocce (though probably not on weekends), and he said the downstairs rec room is to have pool, shuffleboard, and darts. I hope that all pans out!
