Thanks for the info. I see where you're coming from now (no confession before first Communion, really??) Merry Christmas! (On a side note, I assume this falls under the purview of the Bishop to correct?)

Mao, there are many in the church who believes being tolerate of the modern world is the right thing. Many people refer to them as the Church of Nice. I believe the job of the Church is to get souls to Heaven, not tolerate the culture. It is time to pray for the clergy and other associated with the Church.

Dear JC GUys-
Apologies for offense. The parish is fine. My remark was just a bit sardonic. While the Church is one, in reality most parishes present a sort of Therapeutic Deism and the liturgy is sort of a horizontal type of congregational meeting related to the traditional forms of Christian worship, East and West. I think there is a tendency to deny many Catholic dogmas as well as moral teaching by many priests and lay collaborators even while being entirely well meaning. Fr. Tom Iwanowksi seemed to me to deny the need for Confession before COmmunion (one of my children had been enrolled there and there was to be no confession before First Holy Communion). LOL, the nun there told my friend who had been heroically holding back from having sex with his gorgeious faince that they needed to have sex before the wedding to make sure that they were compatible). Etc. Etc. Anyway, as James Joyce said: the Catholic Church is here comes everybody! Merry Christmas! Mao

If you live downtown and are close to the PATH, I would take the 33rd St train to go to St. Francis Church on 31st or St. John's a few blocks away. If you take the World Train Center train, then go to Mass at St. Peter's Church. Those churches especially St. Francis always had masses and confessions going on. This might be an alternative to finding a church downtown.

Mao, I have a lot of respect for you but your comments about OLC are out of line. Is it or is it not a Catholic Church? Never been there, so I don't know personally.

This offends me. I have to work on some Sundays to pay the bills and my nearest church does not have evening services so I go to other churches that do. Your post implies there is something wrong with that. The world is not always black and white.

I would agree that OLC is great for those who are nonreligious. Btw, St. Bridget's is now a night club (already mentioned that St. Peter 's is a cafateria). The Latin Mass, btw, has moved from Holy Rosary next door to St. Anthony's. On Christmas, the high Latin Mass is at 9:00 pm while the low Mass will be at 9:00 am. While the Church is suppossed to be universal, we know that centrifigual forces have resulted in a wide variety these days. If you want to experience the ageless glory of what was recognized everywhere by everyone as what constitutes a Christmas Mass prior to 1970, check out the 9:00 PM High Mass. Btw, there is a concert before the Mass begining at 8:30. The choir btw is the best in the Archdiocese and the equal to some of the best across the river. Here's a description: A Glorious Baroque Christmas Eve Once again, St. Anthony of Padua, in downtown Jersey City invites the entire community to a Christmas Eve Mass of glorious music and pageantry. Mass will commence at 9:00 PM in the historic church at the corner of Sixth Street and Monmouth and will feature Claudio Monteverdi's Messa da camera a quattro voci in F major (published in 1641 in his collection of pieces, "Selva Morale et Spirituale"). This beautiful and moving setting will be sung with the accompaniment of basso continuo (organ and cello). Monteverdi is considered a crucial transitional figure between the Renaissance and the Baroque periods of music history. While he worked extensively in the tradition of earlier Renaissance polyphony, such as in his madrigals, he also made great developments in form and melody and began employing the basso continuo technique, distinctive of the Baroque The Mass will be sung by the resident choir, Cantantes In Cordibus, under the direction of Simone Ferraresi, noted pianist, composer, and teacher. http://home.simoneferraresi.com/ Maestro Simone has meticulously sought to follow the performance notes of the original 1641 folio. The Propers for the First Mass of Christmas will be chanted by the Men?s Schola under the direction of Dr. Joseph Orchard. Motets by Lauridsen and Victoria as well as traditional carols will be sung. The Mass, itself, will be preceded by a musical preclude that begins at 8:30 PM and will feature other baroque favorites such as Vivaldi?s Gloria and excerpts from Handel?s Messiah. A brass ensemble will also enrich the evening at different points such as with the flourish from Monteverdi?s Vespers of 1610

Sorry Felix, but if we were all interested in keeping with catholic tradition, no one would be having sex outside of marriage, no one would be getting divorced and no one would be eating red meat on Friday.
Find a church you like and stick with it, who cares if its not on your block, at least you're giving the catholic faith a chance.

Does anyone know of any other denominational services in the Downtown area for Christmas Eve? I think Grace Van Vorst has one at 10pm, but others?

While I respect the various opinions expressed with regard to the question ?Catholic Church Recommendations in Downtown JC?? I must say that in keeping with Catholic tradition one has to look at what a parish and parishioner really are. The definitions given by Webster?s ?parish = administrative area around a church and under care of a clergyman; parishioner = person who lives in or belongs to a parish.? Having looked at both terms and knowing the Catholic tradition I must remind all of you that have taken the time to respond to the question that Our Catholic Faith is UNIVERSAL. It shouldn?t really matter much where you go for the most sacred celebration of the Eucharist. My answer to the original question is for YOU to do your part in strengthening the Church/Parish nearest to you. There are obviously several reasons for this. The most important being the availability of your local Pastor/Priest nearest to your home during times of need. Please tell me sincerely what purpose it serves for YOU to go out of your way and skip the Church/Parish nearest to you. Please go to the Parish/Church nearest to the place you live and work to make it a loving and inviting place to celebrate The Glory of Our Lord Jesus.
BTW, here is a list of the downtown Churches websites: Holy Rosary: http://www.holyrosarychurch.com/ OUR LADY OF CZESTOCHOWA: http://www.olcjc.org/ Parish of the Resurrection: (St. Michael, St. Bridget, St. Mary, St. Peter) http://www.resurrectionparishjc.com/ Saint Anthony of Padua: website is down as of this writing

I live in the Hamilton Park neighborhood as well and love St. Michael's. My fiance and I are planning to get married there in the spring of 2014! It's a gorgeous, rustic, welcoming Church! It's a part of the Parish of the Resurrection, which includes St. Mary's and St. Bridget's. From what I've seen, masses have a small but dedicated turnout and the priests/parishioners are lovely!! There are several young couples like us I see weekly, as well! Hope this helps - good luck!

I am not a religious man, at all, but I have attended services at OLC. It is a very welcoming community, and very young, as well. In fact, my first time there, I was struck by both of those things. It truly did feel like a very nice place.
I have checked out other Catholic churches downtown, and OLC is, by far, my best experience to date. The congregation seems vibrant and I felt "at home". But, again, I am not a religious person, so my opinion is solely based on the community/welcoming/inclusive aspects of the place and the way I felt while there.

I am also a parishoner at OLC, and I would definitely recommend it to anyone downtown looking for a parish. We live in the Hamilton Park area but attend OLC in part because it has a very good school (pre-K through 8) within the parish, which is becoming a rarity. Our kids attend school there.
OLC is small as catholic parishes go - I think the church has something like 400 families registered. It is also a very diverse and young parish. There is a mix of long-term residents and people who are only in JC for a short time because of work, etc. If you haven't done so yet, I would recommend attending Mass at each of the churches you're considering, including OLC. Come to the Mass you would normally attend so you get a feel for the liturgy, the congregation, etc. At OLC, Sunday at 10:00 is the "prime-time" Mass. In full disclosure, I am involved at OLC as a reader and on the pastoral council so, yes, I am biased. PM me if you would like more information!

I am a parishioner at OLC, and I really like it there. It's a very diverse community, and fairly progressive for a Catholic church. My husband (not Catholic) and I did our marriage prep at OLC with Fr. Tom, and he was great to work with. And even though I don't go every week, I always feel welcome when I walk in the doors.

St. Peter's Church does not exist, it is now the Prep's cafeteria. You didn't say where you live since Downtown is large, if you have a car attending Holy Rosary or St. Anthony is ideal because parking is easier in that neighborhood, 6th Street. If you are on the waterfront, then OLC is nearby, the other churches are part of Resurrection Parish (St. Michael, near Newport, St. Mary's, on Erie and 3rd, and St. Brigid, on Montgomery St, Ferris High School. I suggest you attend different Catholic Churches to see your preference.

My fiance and I are looking to start attending mass at a Catholic Church in the area. The following are all about equal distance from our apartment, so we're more interested in a collaborative Catholic community with young parishners than which is the shortest walk. Has anyone had a great experience with one of these churches? Several of them are very difficult to find information about. Thanks for your help!
