Golf: Skyway course is dressed to the nines

Monday, August 3, 2015

By ANDY VASQUEZ - STAFF WROTER; THE RECORD

JERSEY CITY — Drive west on Duncan Avenue toward the Hackensack River and there aren’t many clues that a golf course might await.

Trucking warehouses fill the right side of the street. Straight ahead, the Pulaski Skyway fills the windshield. Only the massive net on the left reveals the location of Skyway Golf Course.

"It’s an area that nobody’s ever gone down to, unless they’re a truck driver," said Stephen Mills, the general manager of the club.

But now, golfers have every reason to find their way down Duncan Avenue, where they’ll find a gem of a course.

Skyway Golf Course opened July 1, becoming the first public golf facility in Hudson County.

Tee time: Hudson County's first public golf course set to open Monday

By Ben Shapiro | The Jersey Journal
on June 11, 2015 at 9:04 PM, updated June 11, 2015 at 10:46 PM

JERSEY CITY ? Hudson County residents will no longer have to travel long distances to play a round of golf.

Starting Monday, they can do so practically in their own backyard.

Van Vorst park association actually has setup a first look at the course trip this Saturday, May 16th. I was able to get in that field-trip. Will update everyone after my visit.

I wonder if the new walking/running trails that have been locked up during golf course construction will be open at some point as well?

Tee Time! Come summer, the county golf course should be out of the rough

HUDSON REPORTER  Apr 09, 2015

For the last five years, there’s been talk of a county golf course on the west side of Lincoln Park that would be accessible to regular folks like us. The Bayonne golf course and Liberty National in Jersey City are exquisite courses, but unless you’re Rory McIlroy or just a really rich duffer, you won’t be able to set cleats on these gorgeous greens.

Enter the Hudson County public course, slated to open sometime in summer 2015. The nine-hole, 60-acre course has spectacular views of the Pulaski Skyway and even Manhattan. It has three par 5 holes, three par 4 holes, and three par 3 holes.

A temporary clubhouse is being built.

Isn't the rest of the land near there slated to be a trucking company or something? I remember something about the new warehouse adding 100-200 trucks a day to the hell that is 1-9. And yes, golf is a great game. Some people call it elitist and only for the rich etc. So not true as NJ has tons of very affordable public golf courses.

Not rich? Hudson County building affordable public golf course in Jersey City

By Michaelangelo Conte | The Jersey Journal
on October 06, 2014 at 7:45 AM

It's no Liberty National, but the nine-hole Hudson County Golf Course in Lincoln Park, Hudson County's first public golf course, is shaping up.

The $20 million course at Routes 1&9 and Duncan Avenue is scheduled to open around the middle of next year and promises a setting with amazing views and natural wetlands, all for $20 a round.

"This is really golf. This is not pitch and putt," Hudson County Executive Tom DeGise said Friday at the 3,100, to 3,200-yard course, which has three par-three holes, three par-four holes and three par-five holes, including drives over waterways. Its working name is the Lincoln Park West Public Golf Course.

County residents will be allowed to buy a card that gives them a discount at the course and priority when it comes to tee times, officials said.

"This is the first public, affordable golf course in Hudson County and we are the only county in New Jersey that did not have a public course," DeGise said. "The only golf courses in the county now are in Bayonne and Jersey City and both cost about half a million dollars to join."

Real estate mogul David Simon, Home Depot co-founder Ken Langone, and New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft are all members of the ultra-posh Liberty National Golf Club, which was established in Jersey City in 2006.

The county is footing the bill for the 55-acre course and DeGise said he expects it will pay for itself. The course, he said, will attract seniors, schools and other organizations.

The project involved bringing about 1.2 million cubic yards of fill to the site, which had been completely flat. Altitudes at the site now average 25 feet and go as high as 45 feet, Hudson County Improvement Authority Chief Executive Norman Guerra said.

Golfers will be playing with views of the World Trade Center, the Empire State Building, the Pulaski Skyway, Journal Square, the Hackensack River and wetlands where egrets walk among the reeds in the shadow of the Carson-Nguyen Memorial Bridge, formerly the Lincoln Highway Bridge.

About half the site is already green, and officials expect by late spring or early summer the lawns will be ready for golfers. Netting borders the park on Routes 1&9 and Duncan Avenue to snare wayward golf balls.

The grounds will include a clubhouse with a pro shop, dining facility and patio.

There is an elongated S-shaped wooden bridge crossing a waterway amid the rolling hills, blacktop paths for golf carts, and a walkway around the perimeter.

Located near a county building that houses offices for the Hudson County sheriff and prosecutor, as well as the county Department of Public Works building, DeGise said he hopes to move those functions to free up parking for the golf course.

An 18-hole golf course takes more than four hours to complete, but a 9-hole course allows someone to play before or after work, he said. An avid duffer himself, DeGise said he's played about seven rounds of golf this year but expects to double his time on the links once this course opens.

DeGise said he aims to be the first golfer to try out the new course so he can establish the first club record.

Pebble, very true. But a frustrating day on the golf course is still a good day. :)

A new driving range would definitely be nice, but I?ll take a close golf course?

A public golf course in Hudson county is a great idea, regardless of the location. I would gather that virtually every county in New Jersey has at least 1 public course - the exception being Hudson County. I guarantee you that this course will be packed with golfers - even if it is only a little 9 hole course (dissapointing). The only problem you will find is being able to get a tee time.

I also think it would be great if the public schools offered a golf club for kids and the muni course set aside some time to allow for hte cluibs to play. It is a great sport to learn at any age and will provide a lifetime of enjoyment.

Sorry about that Margel - here is the article I was referring to. I must have clicked on a link to it when reading the article referenced originally.

Thanks, JCDD. Actually, none of that is actually in the article... would have been helpful if they had put that in there, rather than the total non-sequiturs about Liberty National and the moguls who are members there.

Margel - if you read the article it states that after the flooding from Hurricane Sandy, they decided to raise the golf course quite a bit to prevent future flooding problems, which set the project back timewise. I am actually impressed that htey had the good sense to do this.

I am dissapointed that this will only be a 9 hole course. The article states that the project tried to buy nearby land for another 9 holes but that the City wanted that land for tax ratables. What a shame.

Any word on why it took so long to build this? It's been under construction for at least 5 or 6 years (anyone know when they started?)

I'd rather have an actual course than a driving range. Still, this place will probably be packed but I'm hoping the popularity of the sport has died down a bit now that Tiger Woods isn't as relevant.

Hudson County's first public golf course getting closer to tee off time

By Michaelangelo Conte | The Jersey Journal
