+1 on Basic. Nutty, tasty, all around really good. Great selection!

I must be the outlier (shocker). I went to Dames once, about a year ago, for espresso and haven't been back since. It literally tasted like an ashtray. My girlfriend and friend agreed. Unfortunately, their cappuccinos weren't much better.

I'm willing to give them another shot because it's a nice place, and I cringe when giving a bad review to a nice, local spot, but it was definitely terrible.

Have they improved?

We're big into coffee (we are currently going through a list of the top roasters in the US and ordering beans). In JC, here's mine:

Dames (Counter Culture beans; good service but tight space; friendly)

ModCup (source and roast own beans)

Warehouse (Intellegentsia beans; good specialty drinks; nice space)

Word (Stumptown beans, which are our coffee preference at home)

I like chocopain but the service is slow sometimes.
Word is also good, especially the cold brew iced.
Had modcup twice and wasn't impressed.
Like Sam AM more for the food, legal beans also good in that respect.
Basic is no better than decent deli coffee.
Dames sucks, pricey and owner is a nightmare.
Brewshot, meh.

If you're a fan of Cuban-style coffee (cafe con leche, cortaditos, etc.), try La Conguita on Grove. It's a strange kind of place (there are never more than a handful of customers), but their coffee reminds me of the stuff I drank in Miami.

For a cup of coffee (not beans or anything...) I like Beechwood. Their coffee isn't too bitter and they make nice lattes and cappuccinos. To my husband and many other people their coffee is a little weak but it's perfect for my palette. Worth a try.

When I first moved here my weekly delivery of Verve Coffee Roasters (VCR) got screwed up. Someone recommended Mod Cup, so I checked it out. I went there and picked up their A Secret Affair Espresso roast. Staff was friendly and coffee was tasty. Looking forward to trying some more of their roasts.

Legal Grounds - Out the back ... the ambience is homely for me and the coffee goes down well !

If you like Mod Cup then Koro Koro apparently serves it.

I think that Warehouse Cafe and Choc-o-Pain have the best iced and hot coffee, and Brewshot is mostly good and slightly cheaper. Sam AM and Cocoa Bakery are solid. Sam AM has a frequent coffee buyer card that they stamp/punch (to earn a free drink), if I'm not mistaken.

There's also Two Aprons. I go for the food, and on Saturday/Sunday mornings there seem to be lots of people in there getting coffee.

Will definitely try Dames soon, based on these recommendations!

I value consistency of goodness. My take:

#1 -- Dames, on Jersey Avenue, DTJC
#2 -- Warehouse Cafe, corner of Bay and Provost Streets, DTJC; almost as good as Dames
#3 -- Sam AM, Morris Street, Paulus Hook, DTJC
#4 -- ModCup; #4 only because it's not conveniently in DTJC, but they are a regular presence at VVP farmers' market and other DTJC locations.
#5 -- Cocoa Bakery, Grand Street, Liberty Harbor, DTJC; not a coffee place per se, but I've always had a good cup here
#6 -- Brewshot, Regent Street, Liberty Harbor, DTJC; have had some inconsistent product here but generally good
#7 -- Beechwood Cafe, Grove Street, better than SBUX but not amazing.

I like both Dames and Choc O Pain, but I note that I primarily drink espresso based drinks.

I'll second Dames as well, but the pastries are not top notch. I think I saw that Japanese siphon bar there, if you're into that:

I'm sure people will correct me if I'm wrong.

Choc O Pain has great pastries AND coffee, and is probably easier to get to from where you are.
