I didn't say anything about the crime rate in Jersey City. Please don't associate me with that old, worthless drunk in any way. As for prostitution, please cite examples about it being "really bad". I have yet to see to be propositioned by anyone in the ten years I've lived in Jersey City. I have yet to see any women in tacky-looking high heels, short skirts and mid-riff baring shirts walking alone or standing by themselves on corners. If there's any prostitution in Jersey City, it's happening inside those so-called massage parlors near Journal Square, behind closed doors and it does not bother me. I don't purchase those services, so I really don't care about it.

News flash, New York City has crime, at least some of it attributable to the fact that there are visitors from all over the world. Some of those visitors do get robbed/attacked sometimes. It happens. Of course, I will readily admit that all the extra tax revenue brought in and jobs created as a result of those visitors far outweighs the resulting added crime. I don't think the same thing could be said for Jersey City. Also, when I say more crime, I am speaking in aggregate terms. The crime rate in Atlantic City is actually lower than it was before casinos if you count all the visitors as part of the city's population. But any way you slice it, the total amount of crime is higher - hence the need for more law enforcement and hence one of the previous posters' doubts about the Jersey City police being able to handle the added crime that comes with more visitors.

I remember Atlantic City before casino gambling. Gambling brought in more crime and prostitution. I actually preferred Atlantic City before gambling, beautiful old hotels with great lawns were torn down for rather standard boxy structures used as casinos.

Not necessarily, but crime in Atlantic City more than tripled after casino gambling came to the city, and has barely changed since. more visitors to a city = more crime; it's a fact of life.

I think it would be interesting to have something similar to the Saratoga Performing Arts Center (SPAC) in that location.
http://www.spac.org/venue I am also wondering how the golf would figure in to this whole project. As I understand it, the Liberty golf course is incredibly exclusive and not open to the public. Would this change? I'd love to golf there!

Good questions, and the answers might result in a win-win for the City and the developers, depending on how the deal is negotiated. For example, the private investors could provide state-of-the-art first responder fire-trucks and ambulances, improve emergency care/ICU capabilities at JCMC, and contribute to local policing. The City and State wouldn't be out-of-pocket - except for the usual chorus of people disapproving of tax breaks given in return for jobs and development.

If our current first responders cannot effectively curb crime in our city, how will they be able to absorb the additional load that this proposed project will bring?
What about firefighting and EMS? I would think there would have to be a serious investment in new equipment and training to be able to respond effectively to a development of this size - in addition to all of the other new developments that are planned for the city. And who all pays for those investments? I'd be very interested in hearing the perspective of a cop/firefighter/EMT on their thoughts on the preparations necessary to support the scope of these projects.

I think that is the only area that is large enough for the stadium/racetrack and parking. This stadium is supposed to hold more people that the Giants (errr, Met Life) Stadium... Crazy... I don't think the Army Reserve property at Caven Point can fit that...The tower would be built right next to the Liberty Golf Clubhouse, where the three residential towers were supposed to be built before the RE crisis hit.

Just a bit of rehashing with some more quotes.
http://www.nytimes.com/2014/07/10/nyr ... for-jersey-city.html?_r=1 The tower would presumably be as tall or taller than 1 World Trade Center, now the tallest skyscraper in the Western Hemisphere. It would loom over the Statue of Liberty and offer panoramic views of the harbor, Lower Manhattan and New Jersey. ?You?ve got to think big,? said Mayor Steven Fulop of Jersey City, adding that he had been discussing the project with Mr. Fireman for eight months. ?The opportunity to have a world-class facility on the waterfront is significant from a job-creation standpoint, for tax relief and for tourism. Paul Fireman is capable of executing something like this.?

They weren't asked; did you think Fulop was going to them for help on this? He already has the Democrat fixer Lesniak on board! (You know, the same Democratic politician with his own law firm that gets no-bid contracts from Fulop). ?This Paul Fireman guy is the real deal,? Lesniak said. ?This is a solid proposal and he?s willing to put the money up for it.?

Local jobs my ass. It will do nothing to help the chronically unemployed unless they're willing to set up some form of a job training center like the Borgata did in A.C. The unemployment rate in Jersey City will not change because of this or will have a minimal dip. In any case, I don't think it's going to happen either. The state constitution would have to be amended for the casino to be licensed. Amending the constitution of New Jersey is a rather huge undertaking and the southern NJ politicians won't allow it.

And look who's been hired by Fireman to push the deal-lobbyist Bill Pascrell III, the son of sitting Democratic Congressman Bill Pascrell Jr! III lists himself as an advisor to Gov's McGreevey and Corzine, and Senators the (late) Lautenberg and current Menendez. I guess he manages to do this on his lunch hour, as he's employed as the County Counsel for Passaic County . . .
Think the good ol' boy Democratic machine isn't running this show? (Mind you, I'm in favor of this, but boy is it fun to point this out to those who whine constantly about alleged Republican corruption).

I think T-Bird meant the casino probably won't happen - the rest could. No private investor in their right mind would want to give 50%+ of casino revenues to help support AC, when they can probably make more for less in NY and PA.

I agree. If it did happen it would be a traffic nightmare for the residents living close to it. Think route 3 near Met Life Stadium when a game is scheduled.

I say bring it on. It's funny watching the irrational fear that springs up any time there's talk of a casino somewhere other than Vegas or AC. Everyone thinking their backyard is going to be flooded with riff-raff, crime is going to go through the roof, the already poor are going to gamble away all of their money, etc.
I grew up in Buffalo and in the mid-90s there was outrage that a casino was being built across the border in Canada. It was going to ruin lives and everyone's husbands would be leaving their families for hookers and drugs just across the border. Guess what happened. Nothing. About 6 or 7 years later Niagara Falls, NY (a dump of a town) decided they were also going to build one. Same scenario played out and once again nothing happened but some added tax revenue and much needed beautifcation of a run down area of town. I hope this goes through. I don't gamble but it absolutely would provide local jobs, it would bring people in from NYC and around the region, and hopefully provide a few cool attractions aside from gambling. As for the whole "regressive tax" thing. Whatever. If people want to gamble they can already do so legally on the internet or by playing the lotto anywhere in NJ.
