I don't think Ox was BYOB. I seem to remember some awesome happy hour deals on wine. Probably a sign of impending doom, in retrospect.

I love to see restaurants succeed in my neighborhood but I still believe the key to longevity is how the locals patronage the place - If I owned or managed a place I would do everything to get involved with the community; sponsor the local peewee league, provide t-shirts for teams with my business name on them - even contact the local schools if they need some team apparel, have a weekly free coffee morning for moms with strollers, offer free coffee to emergency services personnel etc etc. It is tough, but the DTJC locals are a tough crowd to market to.

And this is why you're not in business. All those handouts and freebies you would be handing out are expenses and overhead. You're in business, not in a charity.

I am in business and have been self-employed all my life (and doing very well, thank-you very much).
A free coffee is cheap, that's why most diners give free refills. The 'freebie' is to get locals in the door and by offering a coffee to a certain group of locals your goal is that your premises becomes a meeting place.
The apparel / sponsorship for a local sporting club or school with your business logo is also a cheap ass way of advertising - You can fit-out a basket-ball, baseball, volleyball team or bowling club for less the $1000 thats all tax deductible. (You can learn from McD's and KFC's)

This said, the restaurant trade is a hard sell in JC

User has it exactly right. I liked OX. They have great food. But d?cor was blah, and it was pricey - more so than Skinners, for comparison. I can't remember now - were they BYOB?
I was sad to see OX go, but I do frequent Box on a weekly basis for their sushi.

You're forgetting the famous "OX" and its famous closing.

What was the deal with Ox? It changed over before I moved and I've only ever heard references to it here. Struck me as an odd name for a restaurant.

Very Rich & delicious food, horrible decor and pricey.

Weren't they done in mostly by bills they racked up while trying to get through the crappy building department red tape as opposed to any lack of JC resident support?

IDK, but every time I went there it was basically empty but the food was always good.

Yes, OX was good but perhaps too ahead of its time. I also liked the irish restaurant where Liberty Prime is now. There was also Rachel's a morrocan small eats/ sandwich place where More is right now.

GPs is a second restaurant as is Barcade, neither of those fit your scenario.

Left Bank just opened so I could see them needing to supplement things.

Bright side is Tommy and I know he's doing OK with or without the restaurant.

30 Acres is always full, if they are struggling it's not because JC is not supporting them.

I'm not as familiar with the others.

No one is saying that owning a restaurant is easy. It's difficult at the best of times, but if any of those places are failing it isn't do to lack of business.

At the end of the day JC has more and better restaurants that at any time is the past, and it continues to get better. No matter what inside info you want to come up with it can't override the actual evidence of what is open now vs what was open a few years ago.

The restaurant business has just about the highest failure rate there is so I have no doubt lots of places are just getting by, that's how it is everywhere. I think you're confusing a tough business for something JC specific.

The quality of restaurants are fine, its just 'cheap eats' that will have a better chance of longevity - The more 'fancy' restaurants need patrons every day to keep their heads above water and to generate an income that reflects the effort, time and commitment owners put in. I don't envy them at all, but reality is that JC locals are not the same socioeconomically, as many manhattan neighborhoods.

I have little doubt the food vans directly impact the viability of many establishments as we do have a mini population explosion doing business hours (Mon - Fri) with waterfront employees that venture into DTJC ... Having a busy crowd on a Friday or Saturday night doesn't do it, if you need to employ staff 5 - 7 days a week.

One's that opened up recently (last few years) and have done great:

I'm sure I've missed a few, but I fail to see the problem. It is undeniable that there are more and better food option in DTJC than there were 5 years ago.

Running a restaurant is hard, very hard and there will always be high turnover for various reasons but, despite the proliferation of pizza places, the food scene is much better.

Your local bank manager can talk about what he sees all he wants (maybe they specialize in loans to cheap east places), but Razza, 30 Acres, GPs, Satis and Roman Nose are all packed all the time and none of them are cheap eats. Add in places like Skinners, Hamilton in and Marco and Pepe's and you have a hard time making the case that only cheap places are surviving.

At least 3 of those 'great' restaurants you mentioned are only making a basic wage for their owners (unless they are fiddling the books and paying cash for supplies or wages) with the bulk going to the landlord in rent and staff incomes - At least 3 are also locked into long term rental contracts.

I'm even aware of one 'great' restaurant owner that occasionally moonlights as a cab driver to make thing meet at home; even after as they do all the cleaning themselves to reduce their overheads without pay.

It's a balancing act for many, but it helps heaps if you own the property you run the business from; The hours, stress and commitment deserves a better return then just a wage!

The 'cheap eats' reference like pizza and pasta places isn't a reflection on whether they provide good quality foods or not, but rather foods that can be created by a home cook then a qualified chef or educated cook that demand higher wages.

Quality restaurants not only have quality food, but also quality fittings and fixtures, experienced staff on all levels plus they need to create an ambience and experience for their customers that isn't cheap that also 'eats' into their profits. Another thing many might not realise is that often all the appliances are rented including the dishwashers, freezers etc, thus even if you own the building the over-heads are high!

That's good to hear that BA may be moving back. They aren't too far from me now, but they'll be again more convenient at this location.

BA is not moving back - one of the owners is opening on his own, or so I was told.

I truly hope that the Sava lady is quoting Mark Twain right now: The report of my death are greatly exaggerated.

Pretty sure if you look over a longer time horizon - say 15 years -Grove St, Newport, HP, VVP and Paulus Hook all have more upscale and a better choice of eateries. There has been a lot of turnover, but that's to be expected in the restaurant business.

This restaurant closure and pizza joint replacement highlights the true disposable income of the local neighborhood - Many live in a 99c dream economy while pretending to be 5th Ave foodies.

JC has had a huge turnover / failings in the food / restaurant industry, basically through the lack of local patronage

Name a quality restaurant that has failed recently in DTJC. If it's quality, it'll make it to DTJC regardless of price. The closure is because the owner died, and besides Sava wasn't exactly 5th avenue foodie, so your statement is ridiculous. Sorry your 99 cent stores are still on the way out of DTJC.

We don't even know what kind of pizza place this will be. It could be another Razza or Roman Nose as far as we know. Do you consider Razza or RN to be 99c establishments because they sell pizza?

Maybe Buon Appetito is moving back to Grove?

Ridiculous - its more a case of your ignorance.

I've lived in JC and Bayonne all my child and adult life (lets say more then 35 years but less then 50 years) and just on JClist alone, the topic of food businesses folding is nothing new with rent and local patronage being a cause.
I have frequented many and most with great review and fanfare which have also failed.

If you speak to the owners of some unsuccessful restaurants as I have, you start to hear a familiar story of a good office crowd during lunch time but poor night time and week-end local patronage to keep the doors open - It's one of the reasons I'm no fan of hit and run food vans during the lunch rush hour.

I have a local bank manager friend that even tells me that basically, the businesses doing well are your cheap eats, diner and fast food establishments. JC residents are extremely budget conscious with a smaller disposable income then NY'ers.

I also believe it has a lot to do with the design of apartments and homes in JC; On this side of the Hudson we have larger more modern kitchens for home cooking / entertaining, whereas in Manhattan, the older apartments have extremely small kitchenettes that force people out to eat.

This is just my opinion based on personal experience and information directly provided by those affected or indirectly in the know.

What about city diner? It looks cheesy, but the omelettes are pretty solid and well-priced.

So sad. This was a great place. I have a Polish heritage, and this stuff was the real deal. I am so sorry to hear of the owner's illness.

Another pizza place? Who is eating all of this pizza?!?

I'd love to see place that sells awesome salads. Not that make your own type you often see in the City, but super fresh, delicious unique salads with homemade dressing. It is so hard to find an amazing salad anywhere in NYC or Jersey!

JC also needs another diner. The Brownstone is always jammed.

Soon we're going to have yet another pizza joint, which is set to replace Sava. This will make six pizza places in a two block radius. This is getting boring.

This restaurant closure and pizza joint replacement highlights the true disposable income of the local neighborhood - Many live in a 99c dream economy while pretending to be 5th Ave foodies.

JC has had a huge turnover / failings in the food / restaurant industry, basically through the lack of local patronage

One of my colleagues spoke with her. I will find out more details and will post here.
