Strangers do not belong in vestibules, so why are you allowing this to continue ? And as far as having a cot to make him more comfortable that is purely insane and irresponsible especially if there are families involved. What is stated on your building's insurance policy ?

Get a simple door code lock for your front door. Problem solved. I understand that people are annoyed at having to always have a second key, and a door code lock avoids that issue.
Though you're a kind and generous person. I wouldn't have hesitated to call the police. Quote:

Okay, I'm done. We had this same problem at my previous address. It was a condo building, so EVERYBODY had an opinion. There was even a faction that wanted to provide the gentleman a cot to make his stay more comfortable. Whatever this man's issues may be, you can't reason with him. Move the doorbells, lock the door, move on. If it makes you feel better, make a big donation to a charity that serves the homeless. Your tenants are paying good money to live in a safe/clean environment.

s/ Seeking advice from Trolls and Smug Armchair Experts! /s Here's my awkward homeless question of the year: What am I suppost to do to keep the same guy from sleeping, smoking in our building's vestibule every other night? Background: It's a 4 unit building. We'd rather not lock the exterior door if we can avoid it since we'd have to move the doorbells. The same guy quietly sneeks into the front door late at night (I still hear him), lays below sight of the windows and sleeps. Not such a big deal (no harm, no foul), but... [Trolls and hyperbolic homeless advocates, are you ready? ] Some residents are afraid of him. Oh, and .. HE SMELLS THE DAMN PLACE UP WITH HIS SMOKE / BODY. TALKING VOMIT INDUCING ODOR HERE. His visits require a serious on-your-knees cleaning before I go to work: Cigarette ash removal, scrubbing / bleaching of the tiles to remove the foul odor, etc. When calmly approached about the problem, he becomes belligerent: Today I was called a racist (yay!). I don't want to call the police. What eles can we do? Please, no useful advice sought! The answers I want should include some or all of the following: ? Shaming (best if it involves gentrification somehow) ? Racist / Classist accusations ??Completely useless advice ? Shrill armchair advocacy for homeless/mentally ill ? An indication I should pack up, sell the building and move to the suburbs (this one is vital)

By Erika Lundahl Yes Magazine Feb 20, 2014  On a Saturday in September, more than 125 volunteers showed up with tools in hand and built six new 16-by-20-foot houses for a group of formerly homeless men. It was the beginning of Second Wind Cottages, a tiny-house village for the chronically homeless in the town of Newfield, N.Y., outside of Ithaca. On January 29, the village officially opened, and its first residents settled in. Each house had cost about $10,000 to build, a fraction of what it would have cost to house the men in a new apartment building. The project is part of a national movement of tiny-house villages, an alternative approach to housing the homeless that's beginning to catch the interest of national advocates and government housing officials alike. "It's certainly something that we would encourage other communities to take a look at," says Lee Jones at the Department of Housing and Urban Development. For many years, it has been tough to find a way to house the homeless. More than 3.5 million people experience homelessness in the United States each year, according to the National Law Center on Homelessness and Poverty. Shortages of low-income housing continue to be a major challenge. For every 100 households of renters in the United States that earn "extremely low income" (30 percent of the median or less), there are only 30 affordable apartments available, according to a 2013 report from the National Low Income Housing Coalition. The lack of a support system for people with substance abuse problems (assuming he is not on a once-in-a-lifetime bender)? The impact of uneducated people with no impulse control on society? @Tristeza - if you are this man's friend, you really need to talk to his family about some sort of intervention. This is NOT the time for prayers, he could die out there. I'm glad for the non-emergency contact # - I usually call 911. But your question begs another question - what is your expectation? Just wanting to prevent this from happening is too open-ended.
