His visits require a serious on-your-knees cleaning before I go to work: Cigarette ash removal, scrubbing / bleaching of the tiles to remove the foul odor, etc.

When calmly approached about the problem, he becomes belligerent: Today I was called a racist (yay!).


I don't want to call the police. What eles can we do?



Please, no useful advice sought! The answers I want should include some or all of the following:

? Shaming (best if it involves gentrification somehow)

? Racist / Classist accusations

??Completely useless advice

? Shrill armchair advocacy for homeless/mentally ill

? An indication I should pack up, sell the building and move to the suburbs (this one is vital)

I have to laugh at people who think it is a good idea to not only allow random strangers into your building, but to leave out a cot to allow any insane drug addict to take up residence there for free. The fact that we have to point out that this is a bad idea or describe why it might be a bad idea indicates that we have a significant portion of our population that utterly lacks basic common sense.

Get a simple door code lock for your front door. Problem solved. I understand that people are annoyed at having to always have a second key, and a door code lock avoids that issue.

Though you're a kind and generous person. I wouldn't have hesitated to call the police.

Okay, I'm done.

We had this same problem at my previous address. It was a condo building, so EVERYBODY had an opinion. There was even a faction that wanted to provide the gentleman a cot to make his stay more comfortable. Whatever this man's issues may be, you can't reason with him. Move the doorbells, lock the door, move on. If it makes you feel better, make a big donation to a charity that serves the homeless. Your tenants are paying good money to live in a safe/clean environment.

On a Saturday in September, more than 125 volunteers showed up with tools in hand and built six new 16-by-20-foot houses for a group of formerly homeless men. It was the beginning of Second Wind Cottages, a tiny-house village for the chronically homeless in the town of Newfield, N.Y., outside of Ithaca.

On January 29, the village officially opened, and its first residents settled in. Each house had cost about $10,000 to build, a fraction of what it would have cost to house the men in a new apartment building.

The project is part of a national movement of tiny-house villages, an alternative approach to housing the homeless that's beginning to catch the interest of national advocates and government housing officials alike.

"It's certainly something that we would encourage other communities to take a look at," says Lee Jones at the Department of Housing and Urban Development.

For many years, it has been tough to find a way to house the homeless. More than 3.5 million people experience homelessness in the United States each year, according to the National Law Center on Homelessness and Poverty. Shortages of low-income housing continue to be a major challenge. For every 100 households of renters in the United States that earn "extremely low income" (30 percent of the median or less), there are only 30 affordable apartments available, according to a 2013 report from the National Low Income Housing Coalition.

You're welcome. Yes, they do. I think that they routinely do it when the temperature dips below a certain number, but I call anyway just because a few minutes can make a difference in the extreme cold.

I hear what you're saying but I don't see anyone can tell who this person is - unless you already know people who pass out drunk in public. In which case, you'd already know they do that.

Besides, I think other people seeing this pic is the least of his worries. Dude needs to get his life back on track first.

@Tristeza - if you are this man's friend, you really need to talk to his family about some sort of intervention. This is NOT the time for prayers, he could die out there.

I'm glad for the non-emergency contact # - I usually call 911. But your question begs another question - what is your expectation? Just wanting to prevent this from happening is too open-ended.

Well sure, but I don't think it's an all-or-nothing affair, either. Clearly, you have more empathy for close contacts compared to be people you don't know.

If that is his family and not someone being silly (my guess), they most likely can't help him because he's probaby mentally ill and self medicating. What to do about that? I don't know. The Republicans have cut off the funding and the ACLU has made it impossible to get a mentally ill person care unless they damn near kill someone.

Send a PM to user "Webmaster" with your request, and ask that the picture or thread be removed. To be honest, the guy in the picture could be almost any homeless or drunk person - and I think the OP's intention wasn't to shame the individual nor family, but to highlight the plight in general.
