Oh I'm glad too this is back on the main board! How did your pioneers make out - which route did they take from the Grove St. Path? I'm on the edge of my seat waiting to hear what they thought of Jersey City. And which suggestion did you take? Did your NYC guests walk up Manila? Or did they take the much more picturesque stroll up Newark and then Erie? Or did you pick them up in Hamilton Park? Were they impressed with Jersey City? Were they happy?? What did they say?? What did they say???? Please follow up I believe we all wish to know!

I ask because I've had friends out to the Heights on several occasions, and did everything I could to make it as painless as possible (stayed in phone contact the whole time - "no, don't be afraid of the drag queen on Franklin Street...", fed and plied them with Cosmos) and they STILL refuse to come back. I dunno I still say pick them up in your car and motor off to your primary home in Essex county in Maplewood, Montclair, or South Orange or perhaps weekend at your country farm upstate. I mean you do have a country farm upstate, right? Anyone here that is anybody has one - 4 hours up and 4 hours back in your SUV. Treat your city folk to all of those organic veggies that you grow. Roast a pig perhaps. Then just come back to JC for coffee or something. ( I'm sorry...I just cannot resist this thread....it is such a riot!!!!!!!)

16. Go on a tour of a bespoke meth factory. 17. Consider purchasing a time share in one of the many projects. 18. Put gang tags on the Statue of Liberty for a more authentic experience. 19. Dumpster dive only at restaurants with a plexi-glass, pay window. 20. Perhaps a photo with that lovely downtown couple, oh, what is their name, Pocco and Pacci - something like that. You know the guy that pushes the woman around in a shopping cart. I consider then a town treasure and they make me smile every time I see them blocking traffic in the middle of the street.

To the OP: Sorry if my comment came off as defensive or angry, because yeah, that's as annoying as the JC self-hate. And I do get your point about the 5-borough snobbery; I was in Fort Greene yesterday and thought "wait, what? Housing projects, factories, the BQE....this is so much fancier than Jersey City? ".

Maintain the myth.
1. Tell them not to wear any metal - Metal detectors at every train station 2. Bring bottled water - Water is very dodgy here 3. Wear a waist money belt - pick pockets everywhere 4. Don't wear a watch, rings or jewelry 5. Wear comfortable shoes you can run in - quick get away 6. Don't wash and wear smelly clothes to blend in 7. Use a black marker and color in one of your front teeth 8. They need to call ahead, so you and the neighbors can escort them to your house from the station 9. Tell them to carry some pepper / bear repellent / spray 10. They must come and go in daylight to avoid zombie acting locals

I feel you. Hamilton Park is one of the prettiest places in the entire area, though, so you have that to sustain you. Have fun with your pals, and have them walk over on Erie, which has a lot to recommend it. LOL, imagine being smug when you live in Sunset Park.

...I can't believe that any "snark" came across in my original post?! I bought a home here over 3 years ago and LOVE it! It actually costs me MUCH more to live here than it did in Manhattan. I CHOSE to live here and am VERY happy to be out of Manhattan. I posed my question because I just want my in-the-darkness, clueless Manhattan/NYC outer borough friends to get the best impression of DTJC and share my sentiments? Is that so wrong!? (Sorry-but for the past 3 years, I've been getting innumerable contemptuous quips from anyone I know from NYC (not just my Manhattan friends - but, more annoyingly from the Astoria/Bushwick/Bay Ridge/Sunset Park/Dyker Heights crowd - which, in and of itself, I know, is ridiculous). Mapquest leads anyone that types in my address straight down Manila - which, as many others have agreed, is NOT the best representation of DTJC. Sorry if I offended anyone, I guess I just wanted these detractors I speak of to see DTJC for all of it's glory. For all of you that provided nice suggestions - thank you. For all the others, stop being so d*mn angry all the time (the angry undercurrent on JCList is a big turnofff). Also, I'm not sure why my original post was included in the "crime and safety" forum - but that wasn't my intention, either myself or the administrator made some type of mistake.

VVP is trying to get recognized as a botanical garden - there are dozens of different flowers, trees, bushes, etc. - whereas Newport green has that weird astroturf on the park part, makes it seem like something out of that movie The Truman Show where an entire town is really a TV set. Obviously the carousel is a plus for NG but it is only open limited hours.

I also didn't understand all of the people suggesting tours of JC - if I'm having friends over for brunch or whatever, I don't feel compelled to prove that my neighborhood is cool by showing them around for half an hour first. (Of course, my NYC friends are more than willing to come to JC more than once, so I don't need to show them everything the first time.) It just seemed funny that people were giving the OP a hard time for not having enough JC pride and then bending over backwards to prove that JC is full of beautiful, hip awesomeness. I guess I just like my moves a little smoother - no need to hit me with every play all at once. ;)

Is it because VVP is more conveniently located for the reason why it has been mentioned so many times?
Newport green is a better park - in terms of cleanliness, aesthetics, and views of NYC.

Typically that includes Van Vorst park, grove street from grand to newark, and then the first part of Newark ave (usually I'll take them to eat at Skinners). If there's a farmer's market, art fair, etc. I'll show them that too.

Look for the escalator and continue up to the street on that side. You'll come up into a plaza, facing Duane Reade. Turn left to face Newark Avenue and cross Grove Street at the light (stay on the right side of Newark). Walk one block on Newark and make the first right onto Erie. Cross Bay and then 1,2,3 etc. When you hit 7th, cross (or don't cross) and turn right. We're at #123, top buzzer.

This kind of Jersey City self-hating makes me crazy. 30 years ago much of Manhattan was a crime-infested pit; only newcomers and tourists think it was always the glittery Disneyland it's now become. Tell them to get off the damn PATH and walk over. Bring beer.
