This is a link to the 1910 edition of Engineering News. Page 377 has an interesting article about the Erie Railroad embankment along 10th street along with some photos.

Heat rises, so putting a kitchen in the first floor just makes sense. I own an old brownstown and that is where my kitchen is as well. I?ve also found that these brownstones were all setup a little differently. While the core layout was similar, a square, each home was setup slightly different. Some had 4 bedrooms, others three. Some had stairs that run straight and others that wrap around.

Sorry if I'm repeating info someone else has supplied, but John Gomez has just written a book on historic JC--he's one of the the founders of the JC Landmarks Conservancy Board:
http://jclandmarks.org/ He is a great source of history and resources (and really nice).

Kitchens were most often in the garden level of row houses. Most downtown were build as single residents. The food, etc. came up via dumb waiters that were generally located to the extreme left at the back of the house. The dumbwaiter was hidden behind either a regular looking door or panel that simulated the rest of the room. The houses were turned into multi-dwelling during the depression when there was a need for extra income.

The library has a very interesting aerial survey that was done back in 1964. Lots of gorgeous 8 by 11 glossies shot from the air. If you want to see the railroad yards in northern JC looked like before Newport when in, those photos will show you.

on this topic, does anyone know how the historical 3-4 story apartment buildings around JC used to be set up before they were renovated? I found drawings of one on erie street here. I find it interesting that the kitchen was in the basement!
A lot of the buildings downtown were built in the 1880's and 1890's (according to Hudson county tax records). Did they typically hold multiple families or just one family?

** * If you didn?t already know the 1995 movie ?To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar? was filmed in the Canton Tea Garden up the Square. Look around the internet for still shots of the interior. The Canton was an unbelievable place, it looked like something out of the movies. (pun intended) Too bad it is gone. I blame you newcomers for its loss and the loss of other great restaurants and diners in JC. If you guys only discovered JC earlier a lot of cool places may have been saved.

You can find some images, and a lot of maps of JC and NY at the New York Public Library on-line: http://digitalgallery.nypl.org/nypldi ... abel=Cities+%26+Buildings
And the Museum of the City of New York on-line collections (you will have to register to access those): http://collections.mcny.org/C.aspx?VP ... GYW&SMLS=1&RW=1020&RH=567

There's a few photos on Shorpy of Jersey City in the 20s and 30s... not many, but you can order prints from them directly.

The Library of Congress has scads of Jersey City photos, many online in high resolution TIFFs and JPGs. You can download them for free. Many of the historic photos you see on, e.g. Amazon, are just these LoC photos that someone else has downloaded and is selling to you.
Try this link: http://www.loc.gov/pictures/search/?q=jersey%20city You'll can scan through a bunch of photos and, of course, you can do more precise searches. Also, you might check the New Jersey room at the main branch of the Jersey City Library. If you see something you like, you can arrange to have a copy made for a nominal fee.

I know you can buy archive photos from the NY Times. I wonder if the Jersey Journal does the same thing--you'd think so. I would give them a call or check their website.
Oh yeah, and keep us posted on what you find please!

Hi - I did a search through old posts but didn't find anything with the info I'm looking for so.....
I'm looking for medium-sized prints of historic JC (16x20, roughly). I haven't found a source so I'm thinking of buying some of the books available on Amazon and blowing some of those up, but would rather support someone who's already done the work. Any leads would be much appreciated....... Greg
