The famous Colgate Clock, which has sat on the Jersey City Waterfront facing Manhattan for nearly 90 years, is getting a makeover.
The clock, a local landmark that survived even after the factory it adorned was demolished in 1988, will be torn down to the ground, then outfitted with LED lights, a better foundation and new steel, according to City Planner Bob Cotter. Read more

You would think that the Colgate Clock was heritage listed - If it isn't, I'm sure the guys from American Pickers would snap it up ..... rusty gold!

I took a cruise this past weekend and the clock-hands and logo were definitely removed. Then today I watched them completely dismantle the top two-thirds of the structure. They were breaking down the steel and putting it in a dumpster, so it didn't look to me like they were planning to put it back. What gives?!?!

The Jersey City MUA is beginning the installation if 3 large pumps. I assume the clock needs to be dismantled. Construction should be complete in September and the clock reassembled.

The hands and "Colgate" sign were removed and they are now taking down the actual metal "crossbars" of the structure itself. It has been relocated before, so it could be again. Goldman Sachs is in charge of maintaining the clock, so maybe it will become the Goldman Sachs Clock.

WTF. I don't think they can permanently dismantle it, isn't it registered as a historic landmark? I am oddly protective of the Colgate clock. Hopefully they are restoring it (since someone mentioned the logo and clock hands had been removed).

The clock is being taken down piece by piece. Anyone know what is up?

The park is looking very nice now, especially the part in front of Liberty Terrace. Does anyone know when it is supposed to open?

I happened to be on a sailing vessel a few hours ago off the Jersey City coast and I noticed the hands and the word "Colgate" have been removed from the clock. I hope it means they are getting chipped and painted. I noticed this on June 9th.

Maybe it's miniature hard-court soccer like they play in South America with a #3 ball

Are there really plans for a soccer field there?

The coastline around the little basin has been wearing away long before the hurricane. Natural erosion and wakes from speeding waterway ferries have caused a shocking amount of land lost to the Hudson River. Take a look at that concrete bench at the end of the peninsula, it's almost submerged during high tide. Whatever they're doing is going to be substantial enough to warrant the millions its costing to construct the seawall.

I was actually wondering if they were able to evacuate all the equipment, before the storm. It's definetly the expansion of the Hudson River Walkway, maybe a new park as well. I'm not positive about the latter.

The park was designed long ago. IIRC most of it is going to be a soccer field.

on a recent map of development in JC it was marked off as a park, so I'm pretty sure that yes, the park is going there. I'll ask a construction worker sometime to be sure.

Could be they are only repairing the coastline that was scoured away pretty heavily by the hurricane? If thats true though it makes me wonder who is acting to repair it and why. My understanding is that the clock sits on land that can't be developed, that the clock is landmarked and can't be moved. So who pays to maintain the clock and the land it sits on, anyone know?

Not a good enough answer? Hudson River Walkway. Quote:
It is law that waterfront properties make the waterfront accessible to the public. Goldman agreed to make the area around the Clock accessible as a concession for building there, like privately owned public spaces/parks are concessions for developers who go beyond height or size limits in NYC

What a shame, because the renderings looked pretty cool. So what IS going on near the Colgate Clock?

Oh no, no, no. This was just a pipe dream of a group of Paulus Hook residents. It never got past the fantasy drawings stage and ultimately accomplished nothing but dividing neighbors. And it wasn't until years later that I found out that some of the most vocal supporters of the project were driven by the promise that if a bridge was built, the walkway wouldn't have to sit directly adjacent to Claremont Cove. The whole ordeal was like a soap opera, and not in a good way.
