Yeah, I'm not sure without a liquor license that this business model can lead to a profitable business. Unless of course the food is really good. But it seems almost a little too kitschy to be considered as a viable, bona fide restaurant, no?

I can't imagine a better business model than having people hang out for hours, drinking their own beer and watching a free movie. Thats dope!

I think you are both right. It almost feels like you are stepping into their "home" or "hangout" and they are letting us be a part of the action.

I think the place has a lot of potential, and I think their attitude and vibe was really, really chill and cool. I have NO DOUBT I could have stayed another hour or two, just sitting there watching movies and enjoying my beers. Like I said, I really enjoyed it, and I really hope they do well. My friend was equally impressed, or even more so.

And, by the way, the service was one of the friendliest I have had in any JC establishment.

That's the thing. Jonathan and the staff seem to be doing THEIR thing, without trying too hard -- and inviting us to join them. I love that.

Exactly!!! I do think some of their campiness has gone over some folks head, that's why I think folks have been so negative.

I was one of the original "doubters" who took issue with the BYOB/corkage fee. I thought it was wrong, but was impressed that the owners reversed course once they became aware that the practice was illegal.

I ended visiting late last night, for their taco tuesday and horror flicks. This place is awesome. As others have pointed out, it has a very chill vibe. And, the staff is extremely nice and friendly. From the moment we walked in, the owner introduced himself, we chatted briefly, and he invited us to sit in either section (one section was showing "It", while the other had "Killer Klowns From Outer Space"). I brought a friend and we had some tacos, and some beers we brought. The tacos were good, and tasty, and fairly "stuffed". Once our movie was over, a staff member asked what other movie we would like to see and he put on "Hellraiser". The campy, silly horror flicks were cool to watch while kicking back and relaxing with some tacos and brews. My only qualm: the chips were a bit undercooked and were a too oily, but they are free, and they offered to bring more. In the end, it was a great evening and I am sure I will be back.

Kudos to the owner for having such a great staff, and for doing their thing in the neighborhood. Hopefully, they will make it here. I'll be back soon, for sure.

Ginfi is actually a word for one of the components of aloe that is extracted and used in cooking (not for tequila...lol)

We enjoyed the food, the ambiance, the staff, the owner, the artwork, the tshirts -- everything. And I have a thing for mexican corn, and now I can get it a few blocks away. I'm in! :)

I'm not offended by the ad. I just find that it is unappetizing. It doesn't make me hungry to eat there. It isn't intriguing either. I think it's a marketing fail, that's all.

This ad is seriously over the top and gross. No desire to go to The Dopeness based on this. So many other great places that don't advertise with pictures of dead girls.

We went here this past week and loved it! Food was delicious, staff was incredibly nice. Can't wait to bring a 6 pack to $2 Taco Tuesdays for some sweet horror flicks.

Holy crow. Originally I was curious. Then I couldn't take myself seriously if I went there due to the name. Now I'm creeped out. Who shows chopped up dead bodies on a restaurant advertisement!?!?!?

We ate there last night and enjoyed it.

Great fish tacos and a veggie burrito all reasonably priced!

A great addition to the neighborhood.

I will also check this place out, I use to DJ there back in the day when it was a restaurant, piano bar when I lived downtown. I am just curious what the vibe is like now. When I worked there back in 2005 it was a disgusting cocaine bar with low lifers from all over the city. I look forwarding to seeing what they have done with the space. Anything is better than what it was.

I haven't been yet, but I'll check it out sometime. I think a part of the reason I've stayed away is the stupid name. Should have called it The Dope Taco or Dope Tacos or anything other than this name. The name and branding conjures up a dumb boutique shop with graphic tees and custom-painted hoodies, not tacos or any sort of food.

If business doesn't pick up for you guys, I'd really suggest a name change. Will probably stop by next week to check out the food and see what it's like.

3rd that! I can't believe all the shit this place is getting from people who've never even been there, gotta love JCL. Went there this weekend and had decent food (nothing special), but great service and one of the only places DT that actually plays hip hop. I love indie rock and 80's hair metal as much as the next guy, but it's nice to hear some old school hip hop while throwing back your drink of choice. Also, spoke to the owner and he was such a cool guy. We even spoke about the much discussed corkage fee error, which he personally apologized for. Wish them nothing but the best.

Yeah -- I would think they would have no problems since they are within Downtown's new Newark Avenue Restaurant Row area...

It's too bad a liquor license is about a million dollars in JC (as compared to like, $20k or less in a place like Brooklyn, by the way). I feel that we would have a lot more places to have a drink if it wasn't a huge risk to open a bar here. Why is it so damn expensive compared to anywhere else in the area? Something is off there.
.

Tommy - where did you see the 1mil price for a consumption license in JC? As of February there was one available for use anywhere in JC for 125K, if I understand this blog correctly. Is this location within the Restaurant Row area? If so, doesn't that give it a leg up in getting a license? Unfortunately, this space and the space next to Basic in HP seem to be jinxed.

So I live down the block from this place -- and I have to admit I'm kind of enjoying and intrigued by their tongue-in-cheek, silly name, two-dollar taco, all caps message board posting, inappropriate movie poster, laid back, not taking themselves oh so seriously vibe.

Just me? Mmmkay ... eh, then again, I'm, by nature, a cheerful, easy going sorta girl.

All the controversy on this site is sort of amusing. I'm gonna grab a six-pack and the boyfriend, drag him down the street ... and check them out this week.
