Several years ago the guys who hung out at the dive bars near the Holland Tunnel would pull the same scam. They would come over to anyone getting gas at any of the gas stations and give the same sob story. The difference is they didn't have a truck or car. They claimed the car was several blocks away and they ran out of gas and forgot their wallets. I never fell for the story and never gave they money. One did this so many times he would forget who he spoke to and gave me the same story twice in one week.

As of 8:15pm today this guy is trying his scam at the corner of 1st and Erie, his black pickup is parked on the corner and he's wearing an orange t-shirt, just walked past him on my way home and had to check the youtube clip to see if it was him.

Too funny.

LOL, I guess he does not know about the Youtube video. That is ballsy though. How does he not expect to run into the same people again?

Yes, actually it is illegal. The crime he's committing is known as FRAUD.

It is unethical, sure. But is it illegal? If people are gullible enough to believe him and give him cash, that is their problem. And since he keeps at it, we have a lot of kindhearted, slightly foolish neighbors donating to his cause.

I would tell him that it's such a small world because I drive a charter bus that ran out of gas but my bus only takes premium so if he could kindly give me $300 to get gas, that would be nice.

Huh. He gave me the whole story about getting to the gas station, even had one of those portable gas containers. My work truck was parked right around the corner so I offered a gallon, which he took.

I don?t give money to or buy anything from people on the streets of JC. ( or other towns)

The only beggar?s I do give a few coins to are the guys on rt 440 that are missing limbs. But what are the odds of there being 3 guys missing an arm ?working? rt 440 over by the Hudson Mall? Hmmm. I am still amazed how that one guy by IHOP (not crack head Larry) ties his sneakers. Hmmm he seems to be doing it every 15 minutes though and I do give him extra when I catch him doing it.

As far as buying things from people on the street don?t do it.

Last year one of those candy bar selling ?kids? was busted in a parking lot in Bayonne. He snatched a pocket book out of a woman?s cart after she made a purchase. Ungrateful SOB! Someone once told me that it is all gang related anyway. They have to sale a certain quota or get the crap beat out of them.

I am sure you all know about the white van speaker scam right? Look it up if you don?t. People are still falling for it. Fools!

When I worked down in the Central NJ a few years ago I ran into the white van speaker guys in many a parking lot. It was great knowing that they are trying to scam you. A couple of times I told the guy I didn?t want just 1 but 5 speakers. After we negotiated a price to his delight I would tell him to go **** himself. (I am a very big guy so I guess I could get away with it)

Or when I would spot them scamming someone I would just butt in and start yelling ?you are being scammed, don?t do it? over and over. Some fools actually told me to shut up and let them continue with their $200 purchase. I would have loved to see their faces at home when they opened up the box and realized they purchased $20 run of the mill speakers.

Beware!

PS ? I do always write down the plate numbers and let the cops know .

Who gives money to anyone on the street, ever?! I have kindness in my heart - I donate to charity through verified routes.

There's a blind guy (so he purports and I can't confirm) that has recently settled in more often on the Grove Street staircase, asking for cash. People keep giving to him, he keeps showing back up.

Don't feel too bad, he makes $150-$200 a day doing this. You are not the only one...

He approached me two weekends ago around 6pm outside of Basic. Said he had no ID, no wallet, no cell phone. Actually told me it was against his religion to bring his ID with him to a wedding he just had attended. He was so clearly rehearsed and had an answer for everything.

I've been in JC more than a decade, but had never encountered this guy before this past weekend. He was in front of the Bank of America branch on Newark off Jersey.

Taking advantage of people's kindness is repulsive.

Good video, although it would also be good to film his license plate number, so people see that too. Or post it on here.

This guy parks a large truck on Grove and Morgan. He tells people passing by the he is out of gas and money and that he needs just a few dollars to walk to the nearest gas station to fill up a portable tank. Apparently a lot of Jersey City residents give him money. He has been making $150-$200 a day doing this. Just a heads up....
