The word must be out, we took a bike ride today back and forth over the bridge today and saw plenty of bikers, runners, and walkers using the bridge-even with the chilly, windy, sprinkling conditions.

City officials unveil new footbridge to Liberty State Park

A new footbridge leading from Downtown Jersey City to Liberty State Park was finally unveiled today, seven months after the old bridge was destroyed during Hurricane Sandy.

The opening of the new bridge was welcome news for Jersey City woman Amy Castle, who appeared on her bike at this morning?s ribbon cutting for the new span.

?I'm so happy the bridge is back," said Castle. "We bike ride here as a family to the park all the time, the bridge made it so much easier for us."

The new bridge is dubbed the Ethel Pesin Liberty Footbridge, after the wife of Liberty State Park?s founder. Pesin, 98, died in February.

Mayor Jerramiah Healy appeared with other city officials at today?s ribbon cutting. Healy?s administration has been seeking to open the bridge by Memorial Day.

The old footbridge was a victim of Sandy, the Oct. 29 storm that devastated the region.

"It might have been a favor in disguise," Healy said. "This new bridge will make it so much easier for the citizens of Jersey City to access the great Liberty State Park.?

The new bridge cost $800,000, at least 75 percent of which the city hopes will be reimbursed by federal officials.

Rodney Hadley, director of the city Department of Public Works, was especially happy at today?s unveiling.

"The old bridge was so hard to maintain,? Hadley said. ?The residents needed this, we all did.?

Pesin's son, Sam, who is president of the Friends of Liberty State Park, today praised Healy, Mayor-elect Steve Fulop and other officials for making the new bridge a priority.

"I hope thousands of people enjoy the footbridge this summer season and in the coming decades," Pesin said in an email.

Now GV residents can walk through the PL pathway to Liberty State Park over the new foot bridge. I like.

Is it open to bike over or has this weather delayed it? So happy this was done in time for the summer.

Really pleased this foot bridge is back up but I hope Fulop looks into who got the bulk of this money. Just simple math puts this at a staggering $6K+ a foot!

Ran over there again this morning. It looks all set except for the approach from the roadway. They have gravel aggregate laid down all the way up to the bridge. Hopefully we see pavers working there today and get some asphalt down!

I am so pleased this bridge is in place! Without a bridge, the long route around and the Road Warior short cut were keeping me from visiting the park, I only got into LSP on four or five occasions since the hurricane. Ethel Pesin Liberty Bridge doesn't traipse off the tongue as well as Stinky Bridge though.

The bridge is pre-wired for lighting about every 10 feet. They also have landscaping at each end built into that number...no gold ball however.

I don?t live DT and like someone said at least it is done. But gee 800K for a footbridge that sounds high. I found this link to a bridge builder Gator Bridges. They have some bridge styles that would have been a better fit for LSP in more way$ then one..
.
?GatorBridges typically fall in to the range of $50 - $150 dollars a square foot for the bridge structure.?
.
http://www.gatorbridge.com/Design-Fea ... destrian-Bridge-Cost.aspx

So I guess the $800K cost is mostly for the removal of the old bridge and pouring new footings?

The bridge being put into place this morning. All they have left is to grade Jersey Ave to the base, which they said would be completed by the weekend, weather permitting. photo 52313footbridgeinstalled.jpg

PS ? yes that 9/11 thing is ugly. They should have tapped into some of the thousands of idea?s from the NYC WTC memorial contest.

CatDog,

I was equally baffled by that 2 wall eyesore at LSP but I thought the cost hovered closer to 15M. Remember this wasn't designed by some well know sculptor like Richard Serra....Funny enough these hulking walls were never even finished! See original renderings from the NYC architectural firm, Frederic Schwartz if interested. No joke, the outer walls were supposed to get metal cladding as well but they .....you guessed it..... ran out of money!

Scammed on federal land with Lady Liberty looming in background

Two perfect examples of just how mismanaged our state and local governments really are.

Hopefully Fulop will add a big dose of accountability to his Mayorship.

Sadly, you're so correct. That "monument" does sum up the ugly, heavy handed, "screw anyone who disagrees with you" spirit of modern America.

I swung by the bridge on my run this morning just to see what was going on. Too early for any work to be happening, but it does look like the span is in place and basically ready to go. Man, it sure is white.

Yes, it's a nice size span and a great deal of welding took place but seriously, how can this foot/bike bridge cost far more than an average sized, newly built home?

I can only assume there are only a few companies in the tri-state that are set up to do this sort of work and can basically charge whatever price they ask for. Of course this did go down with Healy in office so there is really no telling what sort of back door dealings took place.

(wow looks like it is happening)

Seven months after Sandy, a new $800K bridge in Jersey City

By Terrence T. McDonald/The Jersey Journal

on May 23, 2013 at 10:59 AM, updated May 23, 2013 at 11:02 AM

Nearly seven months after Hurricane Sandy destroyed the footbridge leading from Jersey Avenue to Liberty State Park, Jersey City officials will open a newly installed bridge just in time for Memorial Day.

The new footbridge, built at a cost of about $800,000, will be named the Ethel Pesin Liberty Bridge, after the late wife of the state park?s founder. Pesin died in February at 98.

Mayor Jerramiah Healy and other officials will appear at the ribbon cutting tomorrow morning.

$750k is surprising number, but it?s probably misleading to think of it as ?just a footbridge? which sounds more casual than reality of its ambitious width and span. The costs would presumably include the following, and would add up very quickly:

- The materials, equipment, labor, energy, and fees to demolish and dispose of the remaining bridge components.
- The design fees for a single-span, steel bridge.
- The design fees for site/civil work.
- The materials, equipment, labor, and energy to build the bridge.
- The materials, equipment, labor, energy, and fees to transport the bridge.
- The materials, equipment, labor, energy, and fees required to prepare the site on each side of the canal.
- The materials, equipment, labor, energy, and fees required to install and commission the bridge.

Good news - work has started on the bridge - there is a crane, excavator and front loader at the site and from Aetna street south the area is fenced off. Memorial day is in two weeks - it would be great to have the bridge by then.

Public hearing on Liberty State Park mass transit/circulator cost-benefit analysis May 07, 2013 | 123 views | 0 | 3 | | JERSEY CITY & BEYOND ? Residents who are interested in learning more about the proposed Liberty State Park Circulator are invited to an informational meeting on Thursday, May 9 at 4:30 p.m. The meeting will take place at City Hall, 280 Grove St, Jersey City.

Liberty State Park offers beautiful open space, passive recreation opportunities, and gorgeous views of the lower Manhattan skyline. Located on Jersey City?s eastern waterfront, Liberty State Park is the largest park in the city. However, the park remains largely disconnected from mass transit, thus limiting access and availability to many Hudson County residents. At present, mass transit serves the edges of the park with the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail Liberty State Park station on the western edge of the park and commuter ferry service on the northern edge. However, there is no regular transit connection between these two transit stations or within the park?s interior. The Liberty State Park Circulator Cost-Benefit Analysis study determined a need for mass transit service within Liberty State Park and analyzed a range of options for a mass transit circulator to service the park?s many internal destinations. These destinations include the historic Central Railroad of New Jersey Terminal, Interpretive Center, Liberty Landing marina, and access to Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty. The study has identified four transit options and their associated costs and benefits. The final report will include an implementation strategy, including phasing and potential funding sources. For the first two hours of the public meeting, from 4:30 to 6:30, members of the public will have an opportunity to view displays and talk one-on-one with members of the project team. Then, at 6:30, the project team will make a presentation regarding the preliminary results of the cost-benefit analysis. The public will have an opportunity to ask questions during a question and answer session following the presentation. A two-week public comment period will follow the public meeting during which written comments can be submitted by e-mail to lsptransitstudy@gmail.com. Comments can also be mailed to the Jersey City Division of City Planning, 30 Montgomery St., Suite 1400, Jersey City, NJ 07302. Please send to the attention of Naomi Hsu. During the public comment period, materials from the second public meeting will be available for download from the study website (www.lsptransitstudy.com), or can be viewed by the public at the Division of City Planning offices, 30 Montgomery St., Suite 1400. The study is being funded with a $175,000 grant from the North Jersey Transportation Planning Authority. Jersey City has hired Sam Schwartz Engineering to prepare the study. The final report is anticipated in June. Read more: Hudson Reporter - Public hearing on Liberty State Park mass transit circulator cost benefit analysis

New footbridge from Downtown Jersey City to Liberty State Park aims for June completion

By Michaelangelo Conte/The Jersey Journal
May 06, 2013 at 10:29 AM

Six months ago Hurricane Sandy washed away the footbridge connecting Jersey Avenue in Downtown Jersey City to Liberty State Park but construction of a new bridge is set to begin, officials said.

"We know how important this piece of infrastructure is to our residents, and that is why we worked quickly with our (Office of Emergency Management) officials and our engineering staff to find a way to expedite the replacement of the Jersey Avenue footbridge," Jersey City Mayor Jerramiah Healy said in a statement. "I am pleased that we will be able to open this bridge for use in the summer months."

A press conference to kick off the construction project was held Thursday at the foot of Jersey Avenue.

The new bridge, which will provide access in and out of the park for pedestrians and cyclists, will cost roughly $750,000, city officials said.

Jersey City has applied to the Federal Emergency Management Administration for reimbursement, city spokeswoman Jennifer Morrill said.

The bridge is expected to be completed by early June.

Yeah that is a nice bridge. (nice pictures) Seems like a waste of money bringing in the heavy duty crane just to take the pieces off of the trucks to move them to the ground. Won?t it have been more efficient cost wise to bring the pieces down to LSP when the pads were ready so they could be lifted right into place? Oh wait that would have been after election day. Lol
