The point of making them look like bricks is that they act as a visual that will calm traffic. I don't know how accurate this is or how much you can calm down Jersey City drivers, but it is touted as a time tested traffic calming solution and that is a positive thing no matter how cheap it looks.
Of course I too believe it is the homeless people, if not the angry mommy stroller brigade. However, I am the first to admit that it could very well have some link to Blackwater.

It is happening in several places. The missing "bricks" can usually be seen in the middle of the walkway, at the peak of the pitch in the road, and then cracks extend to the side of the road. The product is not up to the task.

Its jersey city , not jersey gardens. Please don't start with the ohh well that's not a an excuse nonsense. I'm simply saying this town will not change at the pace you want it to. I see much bigger problems then some crack in the ground . What i can say is, Jersey City has changed alot since i was 12yo, DTJC was a ghetto now you have a starbucks in that former ghetto and the list goes on and on.

This is the only spot I've seen it. Wonder if the rest will wear out eventually. I'm sure we'll see more like with potholes. Even more curious to see if they get rebuilt.

hummm..., blaming on the homeless... what about ice expansion in the winter, couldn't it generate more than these 300 psi load you are talking about? I have a hard time envisioning my friends baby trollers doing this kind of damage. My observation is that damage seems to be confined to the area between the faux bricks and the pavement which suggests that ice expansion between the 2 is at fault - and also the fact that the faux brick layering can not withstand this pressure.

Another potentially dangerous trend I've been seeing are those oversized baby strollers the size of SUVs crushing through our streets - I think new parents severely underestimated the damage that the rigid wheels and rims cause to both our sidewalks and crosswalks like this. I think if we all took a little more consideration into the contraptions that we bring out into the street that we would see much more sustainability in our pedestrian infrastructure.

What is annoying is that the City took the cheap shortcut by using this spray-on fake brick. It was obvious that this stuff was going to fall apart and look like crap very quickly -- it started flaking and peeling within a week of installation!
Another example of the shortsightedness of city planners. As said below, do it in real brick and it would last and look great for years. Instead, now all you have is a big waste of money and another trip hazard.

Those aren't actually brick. The surface is the same material as the black part of the street (asphalt). The section that appears to be brick is dyed (orange/red), heated up, and stamped with a pattern, to make it appear to be brick. I personally thing it looks very cheap, and as we can see, these applications tend to fall apart very easily. Those crosswalks are relatively new (1-2 years old), so imagine what they will look like in another 5 years?
The city took a cheap shortcut. It only would have been a few more bucks to do the crosswalks with real brick, and it would last longer and look good for 30 years.

Why hasn't the city repaired this yet?
Two or three weeks ago I noticed the brick path in the southern street in this intersection had a few broken bricks. You could see the broken of bricks pushed off close to the curb. Yesterday I noticed the shape of the broken bricks has gotten bigger. These bricks make an otherwise crumby looking Newark Ave look nicer. Can we get on this already before it just becomes another gaping hole in the street?
