As long as a market actually comes to fruition at the base of this building, and it's not a ploy to sell the units. Let's not forget the complete farce Buon Italia was at the Trump building.

Not really fond of living above a popular eating establishment or stores where tere is a constant turnover of pedestrian traffic. Plus busy food businesses bring vermin.

I think what Fraulein is saying is that this will be a similar concept to Eataly except on a MUCH smaller scale. That is also the impression I got from reading various articles, although the details are kind of vague and murky. I thought somebody mentioned that it was going to be indoor/outdoor? Although that seems unlikely given the space.

And honestly, the footprint of that building isn't that large, so I'm wondering how it's all going to fit there in addition to 2-3 restaurants which have also been mentioned.

I'm really excited for that building though, it looks like no matter what goes in there, it's going to be an awesome addition to an already nice looking block.

Here's a synopsis:

There will also be "artisan soups, sandwiches, etc. and prepared meals, "very fresh...farm-to-table stuff."

Well, obviously the size won't be the same, but from what I read in the JCI Magazine, that's exactly the thing I'm picturing from what they said.

If we got something even remotely like a Garden of Eden, we should consider ourselves lucky.

Eataly? Really!? I'll believe that when I see it! Have you actually been to Eataly?? It is an EMPORIUM! With over 50,000 square feet. It employs over 300 people. Are you sure that's what we are getting?

It's going to be a mix of produce, meats, cheeses, breads, etc. as well as more prepared foods...farm-to-table, local ingredients, think Eataly. I'm ecstatic! I hope there's fish.

Does anyone know what type of market is coming to the ground floor of this building? I heard a rumor that it's a supermarket similar to Whole Foods. Is that true?

Just walked by Erie and Bay St where there was a mess of firetrucks and smoke coming from the roof of the former police building. It looks like the building doesn't have a roof anymore. Anyone know what happened?

HGTV's 'Kitchen Cousins' to restore former Jersey City police headquarters

A "dilapidated" three-story building on Erie Street that until last July was the Jersey City Police Department headquarters will soon be transformed into 16 residential units and a market by HGTV "Kitchen Cousins" stars Anthony Carrino and John Colaneri.

"This is a building that's going to be enjoyed by everyone
in the city," Alfonso Carrino, Anthony's father, said today to a crowd that included Jersey City Mayor Jerramiah Healy.

The 30,000-square-foot building, Anthony Carrino said was built in the mid-1800s, was formerly the home of New York/New Jersey Telephone Switching Station before becoming police headquarters. The "Kitchen Cousins" company, Brunelleschi Construction, bought the building last year with grand plans to refurbish the structure.

"It's about respecting the building that's here," Anthony Carrino said. "There are large volumes spaces with lots of light that we want to take advantage of."

The building, which the cousins hope to have completed by spring of 2014, is scheduled to have a public gym, a restaurant and 16 residential units, ranging from 1-3 bedrooms.

For Anthony Carrino, the highlight of the building will be the Erie Street Market, which will feature several vendors selling different meats, cheeses, and produce.

"All these great cities have great markets and this is a building that can handle (having a market)," Anthony said, referencing Philadelphia's Reading Terminal Market and Chelsea Market in Manhattan. "If there's one thing in this building that I'm really excited about, it's that market. "

The idea of refurbishing the building excited Healy, who praised the project's benefits.

"This will be a building that will produce revenue Downtown," Healy said. "This was a needed cause and I'm really excited about it."

For Anthony Carrino, a big goal of the project is to restore the building's history and share that history with area residents.

"This is a historic building and we want people to see and share its historic aspects," Anthony said. "It was embarrassing to see what a building like this turned into. We would love to give it a new life."

Selling city assets for a song or giving tax abatements to developers and big business is the only reason Healy is the Mayor. An FOI will show where all his political party funds come from!

Did they mention how the market would work? Will it be one market, or many vendors set up alongside one another? Just produce, or meats and specialty items as well? Or is it still unclear?

The footprint of the building did not seem very large to me, so I wonder how 1 or more restaurants + an outdoor market would fit in the space.

I can report that they apparently have a BBQ place signed up for one of the restaurants. I don't know which one, or how large a spot it will be.

I walked over this morning to check out the "ribbon cutting", but there wasn't much going on. The space was open to the public, and I saw about 4 guys standing around in suits. One of the "kitchen cousins" was pointing out a few things to a small group of guys, and there was some demolition going on.

I walked around for a couple of minutes to get a sense of the space. I didn't see where the open-air market could go.

Can anybody report back if they learn anything interesting?

Sounds like they are describing a mini-Essex Street Market set up with stalls with various vendors - or am I misreading?

This is the coolest thing to happen around here in a long time, I am excited. The marketplace sounds awesome.

This Friday, March 15, at 10am, HGTV?s Kitchen Cousins will cut the ribbon at 8 Erie Street, marking the beginning of the renovation of the former police station into Erie Street Market & Tel.Co Lofts.

Local boys (and actual cousins) Anthony Carrino and John Colaneri, more widely known as the Kitchen Cousins, bought the building in 2012 with plans to revitalize both the building and the neighborhood. The building, formerly used by the Jersey City Police Department was originally the first NY/NJ Telephone Switching Station in New Jersey, hence the name, Tel.Co Lofts.

Tel.Co Lofts will be chic industrial rental lofts from the second floor up. Sixteen residential lofts of varying floor plans based on sized and location comprise the entire top of the building; individual spaces range from 765 to 1640 square feet.

The ground floor, however, will be a space unlike any other in the area. The floor plan is a year round gourmet marketplace with public access to an open-air courtyard known as Erie Street Market. There will also be other businesses moving into the space, including a restaurant. Unfortunately for investors, all other commercial spaces are spoken for, with details pending.

Today, Brunelleschi Construction (Carrino, Colaneri, Carrino?s father Alfonso, and Zach Simon-Curry) is thrilled to have completed the clean out of the space, and look forward to Friday?s ribbon-cutting as a way to celebrate the renovation process. Jersey City?s mayor, Jerremiah Healy will also participate in the ceremony. Attendees will be given a short, guided tour through the space so they can see how the project will lay out.

Also forthcoming from the Kitchen Cousins: An iPhone/iPad app which gives users step-by-step DIY instructions, renovation calculators, tips, storage space for personal project photos and information, and a social section where users can ?ask the experts.?
