If you look at Titted Kilt's other locations around the country, they seem to be located predominantly in cities with a large university or military base. That makes sense given their marketing strategy. Even Hoboken makes sense (more young, single men there still living the frat lifestyle). Considering the already-high failure rates in the restaurant business, I don't think market forces will be particularly friendly to a restaurant that sits in an area with minimal foot traffic and aims for a narrower customer base than it's nearest competitor, Zeppelin Hall. Or is there something I'm not seeing about the neighborhood?

The Kilt in Hoboken has the same setup - absolutely zero parking, and it's in a residential building. I'm wondering if perhaps the chain has a business strategy where they set up in residential communities, assuming that locals will come (rather than hope to attract anyone that lives far enough away that they have to drive).

It's probably also safe to say that their rent, in such a location, is cheaper than a "prime" spot, with parking and/or mass transit access, would be.

*shrugs*

Personally, I'd like to see something open on the west side of town (where I live), but I guess that's another story.

Actually no, it's not in my backyard - it's in my building. And the developer, feeble, inadequate man that he is, has rendered a bait and switch. I really don't need a lecture on LA and NYC (two places I've lived, in fact and you?) and what I should expect when I live in the "big city of JC". So, I have a bit more skin in this game than you. I've accepted that the Titted Kilt is coming - probably better to have something in the building than nothing, even this. I can choose to go there or not - I'm really not happy about the stripperish looking images on the side of my building, but that is a reflection of the caliber of the folks involved.

My point about where it belongs, however, had nothing to do with my preferences. It's a bad business decision. I'll bet you a pint at the establishment of your choosing it will be gone within two years. No parking. An out of the way spot. I don't think they'll do well in the warm half of the year - Zeppelin Hall gets that crowd. And the new building across the light rail tracks probably won't be rented until spring of 2014. Meaning it will largely be visited by people from Gull's Cove, 225 Grand and those within a few blocks. I certainly could be wrong, but I think there are much better spots for it from a business perspective. It could be a good spot as Liberty Harbor builds out, but I doubt they make it that long. The only reason they have a remote chance of making it is because the developer has an ownership interest in TK and there is probably some flexibility in the real estate component.

No matter where they put it, people will complain. The joy of living downtown NYC, L.A. or even JC these type of places will pop up in your backyard.

This is the joy of living downtown in a city. Noise, pollution, and night life (boobs) are just part of the downtown experience.

Enjoy it.

Agreed. Thank you. I could see the side of the road in Paramus on Rt. 17 as also being another ideal location.

I like cleavage and I like sports bars, but I don't need a Hooters wannabe in my backyard. Bizarre location in my opinion.

I would also consider PJ Ryan's a sports bar. And York Street Tavern. And Harbor Casino. And Monty's which is opening on Newark Ave, is supposed to be a sports bar.

Just seems like a weird place for a chain like this. What type of customer are they targeting? The Miller Lite swilling crowd? Not sure if that crowd is really in Downtown JC...which makes me wonder where their customers will be coming from, which is of course kind of scary.

Because it's a gimmick to get guys to check it out. Heck, I went to the one in Hoboken, to see what was up - and the food was decent enough that I'd go back if it was more convenient. Truth is, the area could use a decent sports bar, regardless (Dorrian's is the only other one, really), so I think it's welcome. The girls in the outfits is a novelty, but it's the food and beer selection that'll bring people back.

Tilted Kilt was on "Undercover Boss" a few weeks ago. Didn't see it, but I'm sure you could find it On Demand or online on Hulu or something, for those who want a "Closer look."

I've been to the Hoboken location, and the food decent for a chain/sports bar. The oddest part about the place to me is they claim to be a family restaurant.

Just checked out their site, looks like Hooters in plaid. Food is probably on par as well.

It is opening - they are saying in the Jan/Feb timeframe. They put up super classy doors with pictures of what could pass for strippers on the Marin side over the weekend. I took a pic with my iPhone but can't figure out how to post it here.

JPhurst or anybody else in the association at Gull's Cove - is this place still a go? You'd think they would have some sort of signage up, like a "Coming Soon" sign. Amazingly, the Sawa signage is still up. Which leads me to believe that Tilted Kilt does not have a solid green light to remodel the space.

Yep - you hit it on the head. they are cute girls, but if just seemed weird that they were trying so hard to sexualize the interactions... it was almost like being at a strip club, with girls trying to work hard for a tip, except they keep their clothes on. I think i'm more uncomfortable with it than my wife is.

Worst part is going after work and seeing the waitresses doing their homework in the corner near the front door.....

Having said that - the food is good. We've taken our toddler there (for lunch) and they were very accommodating...

CapnJon,
I empathize with your thoughts. The one time I was there I may have been that dude at the bar. (I was not loud, nor did I make inappropriate comments. As to leering.....maybe I was)
I left the place shaking my head. The girls are good looking. But something about it was unsettling. A male friend and enjoyed our beers, one of the girls who was about 30 years younger than me could not throw herself at myself and my friend more. It was kind of nice to chat with her. But the constant showing off of the outfits and actual comments at least 2 girls wearing them made was a little off putting. Without us saying anything whatsoever, the girls said things like "Bet you like these outfits, don't you?!" Well..... at a level I can say I did, but it was a very superficial level. I believe I am trying to say, "whether or not I leered is not the point."
When we left, the chatty girl actually made a large point of giving us both a huge (unsolicited) hug. Nothing wrong with that I suppose, but it was weird. I commented to my friend when we got out the door, "you know, I suppose that was a good experience, I will tell me wife about it, but I just don't know that I would ever bring her to the place. In fact, I wonder if that is a place men generally feel comfortable bringing a date. Maybe that is the point."
I wish the business the best. It wasn't a place I would go back to even though it was clean, had good looking employees and patrons, and an upscale and pleasant decor. To each their own.
