The late payment penalties would readily be waived as they often are for first time late payments. But even if they were not waived, they would not make up for the loss of revenue stream and paralysis on velocity the boycott would cause.

More importantly it would reposition the citizens as the backbone of our democracy. Right now banks and corporations are pulling the strings and citizens are sitting by accepting the spiraling recession of our dignities.

While I support the protestors' initiative, to really get Wall St's attention the best scheme would be if all or a good number of US citizens went on a debt boycott by coming together and for one month withholding payments on all consumer debt including mortgages, credit cards, auto and student loans.

I suspect even if everyone withheld payment for 3.5 weeks the message would be clear. This would be stronger than any petition, march or rally.

It's good you appreciated the point that the US's poor are very, very well off compared to the world's poor. The US corporations at the focus of the occupy wall st's focus are part of the reason that wealth came to the US in the first place. The US became the world's wealthiest nation by staying out of global wars such as WW1 and WW2, and selling low-cost US goods and services to Euro nations. The tables are now turned. China and India are now selling cheaper than within the US. The world is a smaller place. Globalization is a reality that neither US unions nor US immigration policies can keep at bay. That's a seismic shock to the US , particularly to areas that haven't historically competed globally, such as public sector, manufacturing, etc.

I'm not an apologist for the US 1%, but I'd ask folks in the US to have a more global view. Who is really the 99% globally, and where do you fit in?

A very thought-provoking article. It reminds me of Thatcher's Britain back in the 80's. It was a period when most of Britain's manufacturing jobs were lost to overseas competition. There were huge battles between unions and government over rights (entitlements) of workers. Coal miners strikes and race riots fueled by high unemployment. The US largely avoided these tensions in the 80's, mainly because local US demand kept the status-quo in-place - there were no seismic changes in manufacturing for example.

Fast-forward to 2011 in the US. We're hitting high levels of unemployment. We've a totally dysfunctional, even a non-functional US government. We've record levels of unemployment (15-20%+ if you ignore the government spin). We've no incentives to keep jobs local. We've no real incentives nor plans to build infrastructure, education that can build a country that can compete with the rest of the world. At least no plans that the government we have elected can agree to.

We've a shortage of doctors, technologists and other professional classes. We give overseas students a PhD education in local US universities, then kick them out of the country so they can use their US ed to compete with the US.

There are so many things that are broken in the US. Perhaps directing anger at the 1% is a start. (I'd caution people - ?careful what you wish for? - destroy the existing financial system and you may destroy millions of peoples investments, 401ks, retirements, etc). But I think a real future vision for America is needed that includes overhaul of infrastructure investment, immigration policies, taxation simplification, education, energy independence and debt reduction.

I hope we can get a gov committed to this sooner rather than later. Picketing Wall St? Not sure how that helps. Tossing your idiotic elected officials is more likely to achieve something. My advice would be to those occupying Wall St is to toss your Spitzers and Weiners.

The cynicism of some of you people is very funny and yet very sad. You chalk success up to a group of people who worked hard and made their fortune, the american dream. Truth is they twisted the system to work in their favor. They made millions and billions betting on America's (amongst others) failure. You think of the wealthiest 1% as great achievers! Ha!
