It gave me a scare, too ... turned on the TV & then checked JC LIst. On an already nerve-wracking day, not cool.

I agree it shows an astounding tone deafness to a public put on edge by warnings. I thought "what do we have now, the prophesied chlorine rail tanker explosion?", and turned on the radio.

And does anyone really believe that Lautenberg is blogging? He needs heart paddles to get him out of bed in the morning.

like.

I was walking downtown and was scared for a few seconds. Why on earth would it make sense to blare sirens during a period of national silence?

And where did it come from? I have never heard such a loud noise in my life..

At 1:00 p.m. Today, JC Residents Should ?Stop & Remember? When The Bells Begin To Ring & The Sirens Begin To Blow
by City of Jersey City Official Government Page on Sunday, September 11, 2011 at 12:18pm

U.S. Senator Frank R. Lautenberg (D-NJ) and his colleagues from New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Connecticut and Virginia introduced a resolution that calls on Americans to come together as a nation for a Moment of Remembrance at 1 p.m. EDT on September 11, 2011, the 10th anniversary of the September 11th terrorist attacks, marked by a minute of reflection and ringing of bells and sounding of sirens across the country.

The U.S. Senate approved legislation that asks all Americans to stop and remember during a national Moment of Remembrance on September 11 which will occur at the same time across the country: 1 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time, noon Central Daylight Time, 11 a.m. Mountain Daylight Time, and 10 a.m. Pacific Daylight Time.

Local, state, and national institutions -- including state and local governments, military and veterans'organizations, the news media, houses of worship and sports teams -- have been called upon to mark this minute with bells or sirens to honor the victims. Jersey City Police and Fire Departments will take part in the National Momement of Remembrance.

Lautenberg, on his blog said ?This will be a striking symbol of American solidarity, signaling to the world that we remain united against those who threaten our freedom. It will also be a powerful, nationwide expression of America's patriotic spirit -- and our refusal to forget the thousands of innocent lives we lost in the destruction of 9/11?Make no mistake: 9/11 changed our country forever, and a tragedy of this magnitude requires every American to stop and remember -- and show the world how strong we are when we stand together.?

That was not a mark of respect. That was a huge mark of disrepect. I heard those sirens go off. They could have distracted drivers and caused accidents. They may have terrified the old and infirm since they came with little or no warning.

That was like having a police car show up at a funeral with lights and sirens blazing. Lautenberg - you are a total idiot.

I heard it....shrugged my shoulders....and finished making my coffee. I expect nothing less from a city that applauds mediocrity and exudes beurocracy.

In a real emergency, the sirens tell you, "Hey, there's an emergency here. Turn on the news so you know what's going on."

Run around like a chicken with your head cut off? Get in your car and drive to Pennsylvania? Jump in the Hudson? A loud panic alert isn't really giving me much in the way of useful information.

Someone help me out here...

Civil defense sirens should only be used for EMERGENCY or publicized drill!!! WTF!

Shame on the person who used it for any other purpose!

Jeezus, that's the stupidest thing I've heard of in a long time. Rather than ringing church bells, JC blares a siren we've never heard before and scares the crap out of everybody.

Okay, I remember the fear of that day now. Thanks, JC.

I was wondering about that too. Whose bright idea was it to blare a siren on the ten anniversary of 911??? I can't think of a worse thing to do!

Jc fire scanner just reported person having trouble breathing. I doubt its a coincidence. Blaring air raid sirens on such a day as this is criminal.

I wonder if the heart and panic attacks that siren just caused will cause the sufferers to remember 9/11/01 a little more clearly.

1pm was a National minute of silence so, of course, JC did the brilliant idea of a blaring siren.
