Ha! I was ready to! Actually, I went down to the precinct and after a ten minute round of:

police:"Call 911"

me:"I have called 911 for months, it doesn't help"

Finally, they said next time you call ask to speak to the desk Sargent. So I did - he will not call you back, make them transfer you to him if you have to call - and 20 minutes later, problem solved! :)

Scared him off, the guy saw the gun and took off. I'm not sure what kind of gun he had. I know he kept it right by the driver seat, kind of in between the seat and console.

So glad I am moving!!!! Picking up my car today, if I can just avoid being car jacked between now and Saturday I'll be good to go.

My ex was involved in an attempted car jacking in Atlanta. He carried a gun in his car though - almost everyone does in Atlanta - he was quick enough to grab it, saved himself and his car.

Thanks, if I can't find anything in the Heights I'll check it out. Unless of course your personal 24/7 service is a better deal ;)

I haven't seen any parking garages in the Heights - do you know of one?

And not buying from a dealer or I would ask :) It's an old jeep that I LOVE

So I think I found the car I want to buy and I am all freaked out about these car jackings and break ins! So I just plan on parking it until I move at the end of the month. Anyone know where I can park it and it will be safe?

Great thread! So it looks like

Joe's Auto Electric
41 Maxwell, off of Columbus

and

Summit Auto

are the top two recommended. Good to know. I will only be in JC for a few more weeks, I'm moving, but thanks for the tips about parking. I will try to find a lot to park in while I'm here.

Someone also told me that parking tickets stay with cars here and there can be liens on the titles? Anyone know anything about that?

I might check out that auction too - has anyone bought a car there?

I am buying a car and need a mechanic to check it out first - anyone have a trustworthy mechanic they can recommend? Also, if there is anything else I might need to know about buying a car in NJ, I'd appreciate any tips, I haven't owned a car while living here. Thanks :)

I am moving out of my FABULOUS apartment at the end of the month, it's a studio for $850, don't know if she can swing that on her own but my landlord is awesome. There is someone coming to see it tomorrow, I'll be surprised if they don't take it but let me know if it might work for her and I can let you know if it's still available.

Nope, I guess there are two of them!

If it were really "disco" I might not mind LOL

I am not even sure the cops come, it seems like they might because the music goes off and on but if they do, then the people making the noise do not take the cops seriously that's for sure.

I just don't see why it has gone on this long and a cop told me last week that the restaurant had not been ticketed - months of calling and no tickets - why is that? Why are they allowed to operate in this neighborhood?

I am going to go insane if something isn't done. I work on weekends I can't be up all night because of my loud neighbors new disco restaurant. I call every weekend and the police do nothing or they turn it up after the police leave - I don't know what is going on but it's every weekend for months now. There is a law -WHY AREN'T THEY ENFORCING IT?????????? What can I do because I am ready to move.

Try reporting it here:

Everything I report gets taken care of within days AND we have a fancy new solar compactor garbage can on the corner! Yea!

Well my street has been clean for the last two days! Yea!!! Could it have been the complaint? I don't know but this the site I used:
http://mygovhelp.com/JERSEYCITYNJ/_cs/RequestSelect.aspx

I even did it anonymously because I didn't feel like filling out the form. Maybe we just have to complain more....

My street was clean today. :) Of course they didn't clean out the foot - yes foot - of trash in the trash can holder, but the can was emptied. The didn't notice that the can was sticking out a foot over the top???

I dont know how many of you have had bad experiences with the JC Post Office/Carriers or have a way for me to contact a LIVE PERSON at the DOWNTOWN JC Post Office but I would appreciate your help. Any contact information at all would be helpful.

I have lived in three apartments in JC and in all three my mail is:
Placed in the wrong box in other buildings
Placed in the wrong box at my building
Not delivered at all (this is a popular one - 3 days w/o any mail)
or Does not arrive at all!!
Never delivered at the same time and rarely by the same carrier

When you try to call and track down the missing mail/packages you cant get a human being. Only endless loop recordings. When you tell the carrier directly - they just shrug saying it must be the other guy.

JC presents enough challenges - do I have to add to my "Reasons to Move" list? Move so you can get your mail??? I lived in a city of over 11 million people and got my mail without fail. What is the deal?????

I have the same problems. Five or six complaints later still no improvement. Mine NEVER picks up outgoing mail either and the PO told me that they aren't required to - news to me, every other city PO does. I gave up on the Post Office here long ago. FedEx only now.

I don't think that would be effective for two reasons:

1) They know about the trash - if they are doing anything, it's obviously not working
2) I have contacted them twice on two unrelated issues and never heard back from them

And why go to the middle man, why not just go directly to the source?

I am up for collecting trash and taking it to city hall :)

I don't blame you for moving. I love the location and I love my apartment but I'll move too before I'll clean up other people's filth every day. It's depressing seeing all this trash.

Perhaps we photograph the litter bugs and post to a web site? Would these people be ashamed to be caught littering? Might work with the pizza guy, if the first result on Google for his restaurant is his trash all over the streets, he might decide to clean it up.

I don't think it's all the residents fault though. I have lived in a lot of cities - never seen trash on the street like this. I remember reading some studies long ago about how if an area is kept clean, then the residents are more likely to keep it clean. When it's dirty, they care less and are more likely to litter.

OK, so let's think about it. Obviously there a are a lot of JC residents that are disturbed by the amount of trash on the streets. It looks like we have several causes that need to be addressed:

1) "Trashy" residents
2) Ineffective city policies
3) Lack of enforcement
4) Lack of decent sanitation department or management of sanitation dept. (includes lack of trash cans)

What can we do that would actually be effective?

Agreed but who is supposed to be enforcing this? JCPD? Should this really be the responsibility of the JCPD when all they have to do is put in some trash cans and empty them regularly? Obviously someone needs to pay that pizza guy a visit but what about all the other trash? This city is overrun with garbage, someone is not doing their job. The sanitation dept? Who is responsible for keeping the roads clean?

I, like a lot of other posters here, think trash cans would go a long way towards solving this problem - who is in charge of that?

Maybe we should start a petition or maybe we could all get together one day and pick up a bunch of trash and take it down to city hall. I bet we could get on the local news.

Lead by example you know.

How many times have you walked by a piece of trash, cursed to yourself, and kept walking.

You've got to be kidding... Well for starters I don't own a dump truck.

I do pick up trash in front of my building - all the time. And my landlord does a great job of keeping our building and sidewalk tidy, like I said, the problem is MUCH BIGGER.

I don't really care what the ordinance says either, OBVIOUSLY IT'S NOT WORKING

WE NEED TRASH CANS THAT GET EMPTIED ON A REGULAR BASIS

It's time to elect a city government that will clean this place up, it could be such a nice place to live.

Trash can be a very frustrating issue for some people.

In defense of the city, it is the responsibility of the store and home owners to clean up there sidewalls.

I lived in Brooklyn for many years and trash is an issue there as well, even in the nice neighborhoods like park slope.

It is not until the residents and shop owners care enough to go outside and pick up the trash that things will start to look nicer.

After living here three yeas I have already seen a difference in the amount of trash.

Sorry but the problem is a LOT BIGGER than that. And I certainly don't expect my landlord to clean up trash thrown on the side walk by people walking down Palisade.

How about the PILES of trash on Observer Highway under the overpass? Have you seen that mess? It's disgusting. Have you ever walked down Patterson Plank and taken a look at the cliffs? Trash everywhere. Who is responsible for that?

Why is it that other cities can manage to get the trash off the streets but this one can't?
